The new James Bond game is getting rave reviews, even though it also has some serious criticisms (basically that it dumbs down the "Hitman" style stealth playground stuff to a silly level, and the opening chapter is a total smelly butt). Yet there are no accusations of corruption, eThICs n gAME germalism whatever, industry plant nonsense... for some reason*

*Bond is a straight white man
I figured the Hitman team would make a solid Bond game, but I think it would be a game that like no one wanted. The people wanting something like a Hitman game starring James Bond would be disappointed because it will probably be a poor man's Hitman, then the average gamer would want a slick and smooth shooter filled with set-piece action scenes that I'm doubting the game will have. The Hitman team doesn't really do great shooting gameplay or set-pieces so either the game wouldn't feature that or it would feature that but it just wouldn't be done that well. That's with me knowing nothing about the game but the occasional Youtube thumbnail that I've scrolled past, I know Luke Stephens liked that game because I scrolled past his video in my Youtube feed yesterday.

To be clear I personally don't have strong feelings about it. The game looks fun and silly. I'm not a Hitman fan- I tried it, I admit I'm just too dumb and impatient to appreciate those games. So the fact that it dumbs down that stuff is actually good for me personally. This is, to me, is the ultimate "wait for a sale" game, in the same way that Star Wars Outlaws is (a game I just bought on sale).
I compare them because ultimately the appeal is to play in a beloved franchise. I don't love Bond- to me it's just a bunch of basic cable content from when I was a kid, the Connery and Moore movies. Cheesy pleasant background that hasn't aged well and frankly doesn't make sense after the Cold War and third-wave feminism. I could never take the Brosnan/Craig movies seriously.

I never really dug the older Bond movies as a kid, they were too cheesy for me. I did like Goldeneye (the 1st 2/3s, the last 3rd is just OK) and Tomorrow Never Dies was great (Michelle Yeoh!!!), Casino Royale (Craig) was great but I did not like any of the other Craig movies.

You make some fire noise about "forced walking sections" put nothing about ethics. Yet those same type of people talked as if they already played the game when they haven't even touched it yet.

The first couple are pretty good. Dr. No and From Russia with Love are low key and well put together. Goldfinger I think is when the gadgets started taking up prominence.

I don't know what a "silph scope" is and at this point I'm too afraid to ask.
Silph is the name of the company that made the Scope, and a Scope would probably be some type of goggles ( examples; Smith Scope, Montec Scope ).

In this particular case a pair of goggles that shows ghosts to the wearer.

I disagree.

Call of Duty has always had a pretty clean and clear design aesthetic, taking inspiration from fonts used in military documents, stamps, and stencils. They aren't anything special, they're just very unobtrusive.

The weird Chinesium 4 in this logo is pretty much a rejection of their logo design sensibilities, and it looks extremely out of place and pretty ugly.

The Modern Warfare 4 logo is surprisingly ugly.

COD has not had a good logo since Infinite Warfare and WW2.

it's amazing what SFV does better than IV. Don't get me wrong, IV is a better game from visuals and a gameplay standpoint, but all versions of after vanilla IV pretty much have no single player content. Aside from arcade mode, it expects you to be online constantly. The vanilla version actually has survival and time attack mode. Starting at Super and afterward, they got rid of them for no good reason. It does hurt replay value. V on the other hand kills pretty much IV in any single player content, since Arcade Edition and Chamption Edition.

SFV
was bad at launch 10 years ago (Christ this game is a decade old now!), and took 3-4 years to get good/great, but at least gave players a steady update of single player content. By the time of Arcade Edition, Capcom actually put different variations of arcade mode, where you could play SF1-SF5, and be rewarded different bonuses and art galleries by beating them on Normal or above and being able to 1CC them. You also had the personal stories per each character, but these varied in quality, but it was nice seeing certain characters have their character arcs close out, or finally finish up in some fashion. SFV does have a Survival Mode with harder variations and buffs/items you can get via sacrificing your score, and being randomized. Survival originally wasn't done well, but by Season 2 apparently, it was much better and fixed to be not tedious anymore. There is Extra Battle too. Where you get different online challenge matches where you fight suped CPU opponents and get various.

Another advantage I do love with V over IV, is Super moves are so much easier to do or combo into. IV could be fun, but it can be pain to combo into supers or do them on a consistent basis, unless you had an arcade stick, a fight pad, or playing the 3DS version with one button/one tap Super/Ultra moves. Granted, if you hot key certain button combinations in the non portable console versions, this is less of an issue, but I still have moments where Super/Ultra won't come out, and I am using the analog stick on my PS5 or PS4.

Also, I love the fact V has destructible scenes and environments. There are even stage enders acting as sorta stage fatalities, but are more so humiliations, though certain environments you can knock your opponent into at critical/low health at the edge of the screen look painful enough and funny at the same time. In certain places like the downtown Hong Kong area, you can knock an opponent into a restaurant on the left side edge of the screen. If you have more than two rounds turned on. You can knock them further into the kitchen and have a bowl fall on their head. That bowl will stay on until the opponent takes hit, or if you added more rounds before starting the match. It's something I wish Street Fighter VI brought back with it. We all know VI is the better version of V, but not bringing this back in any capacity seems like a lost opportunity, because most of V's stages had them, and only really stopped doing them after the AE update. Seriously, nothing is more satisfying than doing an EX attack or a Shinku/Denji Hadoken and knocking someone throw a wall, glass, or even knocking the final boss into a jet engine and getting fried by it. That is fucking awesome!

No more shooting Arabs, now it's on to Koreans?
iirc, there was a big FPS game, circa PS3, that was in development for a long time about US Vs China war, and then last minute they decided to switch to US Vs Korea because they wanted to sell the game in China. So this might just be the same thing again.

I wonder if you're talking about Homefront?

Being indifferent towards a piece of media or product doesn't make you a "fence sitter". I know it's something obvious. But there are people who really don't get this or constantly have a "with me or against me" attitude on Twitter. Black and white insanity, or people who can't handle somebody that's not hating something nor loving something passionately. That's life. You're not gonna be passionate, nor give a shit about every single thing, nor other's opinions about it.

Related to this, it is incredibly uncommon for people to like something just to spite you. If someone enjoys something that you don't, they more than likely just see something you didn't find as big of a deal as they did, or something you felt was a big deal wasn't to them. That's why opinions are subjective. It's not necessarily just because, say, one person's cheesy is another person's grating in terms of acting, for example. It's also because some people just have more leeway for acting if the rest of the film makes up for it. Or, in gaming terms, they may not disagree if a game feels a bit handholdy, but disagree about it being an actual problem. AND THAT'S OK.

alright,

instead of complaining about wasting my time watching these "gaming platform showcases," I think I'm just gonna stop watching them altogether and have Wario64 do all the work for me by posting tweets as soon as something is announced.

But god damn it, I'm a sucker for a good hype show. So my monkey brain is bound to go into SGF doing the same shit again.

Aw, the human psyche. Ya gotta love the contradictions!

Modern games with good female writing:

  • Nier Automata
  • Oneechanbara Origins
  • Street Fighter VI - Play their arcade modes or bond with them in World Tour mode. They got some deep stuff going on.
  • Hi-Fi Rush - Even though Chai is the main character, none of the female characters who play huge supporting roles are written poorly, nor the men either.
  • Both Norse GoW games. Yes, Freya can be up her own ass at times, but at least she gets called out on it several times in Ragnarok.
  • Ghost of Tsushima and Yotei.
  • Alan Wake 2
  • Resident Evil 8 and Shadow of Rose DLC
  • Resident Evil 9
  • Silent Hill f
  • Celeste
  • Sayanora Wild Hearts
  • Gris
  • Assemble With Care
  • Eliza
  • 1000XResist
  • Penny's Big Break Away
  • Signalis
  • Crow Country
  • Double Dragon Revive
  • River City Girls 1 & 2
Sounds like some people have only been looking in the one direction or blinded by hate and not giving games an actual chance, and rely only highly dubious second hand opinions. Writing of female characters wasn't perfect back in the 80s-2000s either, and many cases (not all) worse than now. Women were either treated as sex objects/eye candy/needing to be rescued only, or thinking making them total assholes as being tough was the only way to go.

Not my take exactly here, but Nick has a point and talks about additional content single player that can make the game last longer and ease new players in.
