Y'know, instead of spending all this time trying to make a game to impress nintendo to give it to him and then spending all that time protesting, you'd think he'd have gotten a job and fucking bought the fucking license.
As has already been pointed out, it is not that simple. You don't just pay Nintendo for an SDK you have to meet a number of conditions, the stability of your company, the financial viability of the project, you need to be able to demonstrate you are able to meet minimum QA standards, you need distinct studio space that is not your residence... I could go on but I'd have to go over the application procedures.
o

My studio intends to apply for a dev license and kit within the next five years so I am horrifyingly familiar with the process. I would much rather work towards being an XBLA developer but a lot of our title concepts are more suited to the demographics of other systems.

The reason bob is freaking out is because he thinks he meets and exceeds all these standards and is willing to purchase the dev kit if Nintendo would offer to sell it to him.
The Actual question everyone seems to be missing is DOES he actually meet and exceed said needs?
precisely what i was about to ask... Nintendo may be a large corporation and they may only be interested in making money even if that means crushing peoples hopes and dreams, but Nintendo isn't above putting out shovelware either (far from it, it's almost like they live for it) so even if the game was decent, there has to be a good reason why Nintendo didn't give the nutter a Dev kit.

...Oh heaven's I just said nutter...I should stop playing fable II
Nutter is a perfectly normal british word, and excuse me by the way while i point out that STEPHEN FRY IS IN FABLE 2!!!! I FREEKIN LOVE THAT GUY!

That is an excellent question and one that is not lost on a lot of us, if you go over the whole scenario you actually find a lot more evidence suggesting these requirements are not met than anything to the contrary.

70 days from now I expect to read articles like "biggest hoax evar". I'm just relating the given justifications of his blog (from when I last visited it, I shall not be returning) and explaining some of the finer details of the process for the education of all. It's bothersome for me to hear "why doesn't he just buy it" when that has nothing to do with anything.

I know a lot about this whole thing, I researched it out of general pop-culture interest and have been following Bob's game for a bit now, and I already knew a lot about getting official SDKs being with a young indie studio, it was very relevant to me. The whole lack of professionalism really gets to me, I personally would be more disgusted if this was anything but a hoax.

Yes, but you see, I'm not british, and I hate seemingly coming across as pratish and trying to be something I'm not when, quite frankly i wasn't trying to...oh I'm digging myself a hole aren't I.

Anyway, I KNEW Reaver sounded familiar...

Wow. That's a bit much. Nintendo should really stop being such asses about their software, or Bob should start developing for something else. He should try Unity or XNA.

Also, Bob should have done something more public. If he had protested outside of Nintendo's American HQ or something, he might have gotten some press and some attention to his cause. Instead he choose to display himself as a looney who would look more like he was trying to detox from heroin than get SDK.

Also, does, he meet those requirements? Because it sounds like he doesn't.

To be honest having seen the youtube footage of the game it does look awfully dull. I am not gonna get hugely involved in this one, by that I mean I am not gonna go away and read the whole history of why he is doing this and what he thinks of everyone and everything but the primary question has to be, what is he aiming this at? If it's to get a game he really wants out there then why not just do the coding on the PC? Their is a shitload of free software that would allow him to do this. He could also get it out to the masses at barely any cost.

So getting a game out there for the masses isn't his purpose because the means are there. Is this just some personal pet project as the intro to his youtube demos indicates? That he has made a game for him, the way he wants on the medium he wants? If that's the case what makes him so special that Nintendo should give him the rights to an SDK for his own personal pet project?

If someone wants to paint a little more of the overall picture for me I'll have a rethink on this opinion but right here and right now I fail to see what this guys problem is, apart from the usual douchebaggery.

So, how much does a DS SDK cost normally, anyway? $2000? (That's about how much a Wii SDK costs, give or take $500.)

Anywho, as much as I admire his capacity to become an Internet sensation based on his drama-queen credentials alone, I'd have to say that if I was in his shoes I'd just develop the thing for Java or something. The Nintendo DS might be be a neat little device, but it's hardly the only fish in the sea. Whatever game he's working on probably would have worked just as nicely on the iPhone, and I bet that SDK is pretty close to open source.

Honestly speaking, I loathe both of them to a certain extent. Especially the big N. Do feel sorry for the guy, though
