I'll add Heroes of Newerth. I could say Defense of the Ancients, but as this is a map in Warcraft lll a game, Heroes of Newerth is suited better here.

Really, what you have to have played before you die is the phenomenon of DotA, an AoS based map that has taken the world by storm.

Really, this is simply the most balanced semi-strategic multiplayer game I have ever played.

I prefer HoN over DotA, because it has some visual perks and is also more intuitive as it has it's own engine and is not merely a map in Warcraft lll. I should also add that League of Legends appears to be more unstable, and definitely doesn't look appealing from my perspective. But alas, all three of these, HoN, DotA & LoL, are a type of carefully crafted gameplay mechanics that work incredibly well.

Gears of War, many people are going to state the other, better games I would (fallout 3, AC1 or 2, Age of Empires 2, Total War games). The first time I played it and chainsawed a guy felt gleefully childish. It made me think that this was what kids must've felt like the first time they played mortal kombat.

i would definatly second final fantasy iX mention earlyer, mostly because how each charicter had thair own great sub-story and also how they interacted with one another.

For my own game i would love to nominate any of the great megadrive/snes classics but im going to go for KANE&LYNCH:DEADMEN for its gritty story and the many WTF moments.

Peace!

It's not necessarily my all time favorite game, but Batman: Arkham Asylum deserves mentioning, just the sheer amount of fun to be had, whether your a comic book fan or not, is orgasmic.
But my pick has to be Mirror's Edge. A totally new gaming experience for me, It drew me in and left me wanting so much more.

Bah just one? I'm tempted to throw Tombraider 2 in and do my usual fanboyism but I'm gonna have to say... System Shock 2.

I would quibble with Postal 2. I myself love it, however it should not be on the concensus of 1001 games you should play before you die. It is a great game if you can handle it, but most modern people would be in shock because that game is seriously offensive and violent. I myself love it though.

Whoever said persona 3, also persona 4 and Persona 2: innocent sin.

And Earthbound/Mother 2, oh my I ran over my 1 game limit. oh well.

I want to say a Pokemon game but I'm not sure which one. For the pure amount of pokemon you can catch it has to be Heart Gold or Soul Silver (which surpasses DPPT because it changed a few things around and made it a lot more accsessible.

Though instead I shall say, for the best out of the Pokemon games: Pokemon Gold and Silver

For that reason Postal 2 probably would be on it. 1001 movies had Irreversible on it. If you don't know what that is then your better off not knowing although it's still worth a looksee.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Since many others are posting more than one, I'll throw in Left 4 Dead 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Pacman, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, , Halo: Combat Evolved,

World of Warcraft

We all may have our grievances, but if you are going to make this list then America's most popular online game should be on there.

Any Pokémon, but I'd think the first few should be top priority. As the bare bones of the series, the others only add gimmicks which can detract from the experience.

Or if you're shooting for fun, do the latest.
