DmC: Devil May Cry Dev Talks Boobs

Tameem Antoniades answers the most important question you have about DmC: Devil May Cry: "Where are all the boobs at?"

Since the announcement that Enslaved and Heavenly Sword developer, Ninja Theory (No, not Team Ninja, we go through this every time we talk about this game), would be taking on the Devil May Cry series, I've heard nothing but complaints. Complaints about Dante's questionable new design, complaints about the engine and its 30FPS limitation, complaints about the brief snippets of gameplay we've seen and complaints about the music. I've even seen one particularly irked gamer take issue with the game's logo. The one thing I haven't seen anyone complain about is the game's notable lack of squishy hobblers - breasts, if you're an intellectual. The question did come up during a recent interview however, and Ninja Theory boss, Tameem Antoniades, complete with his suspiciously familiar haircut [http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/3/34626/1675720-tameem.jpg], was on hand to answer it.

"I've nothing against big tits," he assured PSM3. "I'd rather have my head resting on a pair right now - but if you're going to try and stimulate someone on different levels, there's better ways to do it."

"If you look at the stars in movies, the women people find really attractive are often not the ones with the biggest tits. You've got to be attractive on a different level."

True enough, female game leads do tend to be somewhat less aerodynamic and considerably more buoyant than their movie counterparts - Either due to the relative youth of the medium, or simply because of the (wrong) common consensus that most gamers are of the spotty, hormonal male variety.

"We did that in Enslaved with Trip. People loved her, not because she had big breasts and high heels, but because she felt like someone who could be your girlfriend," he said.

"That to me is more attractive than a prostitute walking around with a big gun," he added. "Not to demean prostitutes - it's a valid form of commerce."

Antoniades did answer some of the more pertinent criticisms leveled at the game. Apparently, Ninja Theory decided to use the Unreal engine, despite its slower performance, because the company didn't want to "spend a year learning a new engine."

Talking about the changes Ninja Theory have made to the series' lore, Antoniades said he understood some of the fan outrage.

"People form a relationship with a series, and if that gets broken or bastardized, people get upset. That's understandable. So I don't dismiss it," he said. "We've all been there: the new Star Wars stuff, it's changed a lot but not added anything. I think we've added stuff. We've added interesting things to the series that you wouldn't have got from Capcom Japan. If we do our jobs right, you'll get a good, fun game with interesting angles that bring something fresh to DMC."

He also addressed the common insinuation (so common it cropped up in the beginning of this article) that Dante's new design is based on Antoniades himself.

" He's a decade and a half younger than me, way better looking..." he said. "The only thing he's got is black hair. And he's male. I didn't design the character. I didn't go to our designers and say, 'I think it's a really good idea if we make the new Dante look like me, because I want to be in the game.' They'd laugh at me. They'd throw me out the window."

Understandable but why didn't Capcom let them use the DMC4 engine? It's more than capable of providing good performance after several iterations. I mean Capcom is already supervising the gameplay side of things, why not go the extra mile and let them use their engine with the help of their programmers. That'll probably save time if you're worried about production taking too long.

Or Capcom can just announce a PC version so the FPS complaint can die down a little. Just saying. *shrug*

Amazing, maturity from game publishers? I'm waiting for the punchline.

Although I'm pretty sure the DoA people are cutting back on the boobs. Slightly.

"Squishy hobblers" is a new one to me. But it makes me think of grandma boobs. No offense if you're into grandma boobs, though.

People are mad at this guy, and he does have a really douchey haircut that screams "come check out my Cure cover band at Old Sad Bastard's Pub this Monday at 5PM".

But then...

This is clearly a man after my own heart. So he's fine in my book.

Not sure how a girl enslaving you to escort her somewhere is an attractive trait for a girl, but whatever. Different strokes, whatever floats your boat, ect.

See, this is exactly the kind of thing that leads to those "Mass Effect 3" explosions, which I think will become more and more common as time goes on (just watch). The gaming industry as a whole sits around and justifies whatever it wants to do, rather than listening to the people who pay them. Now granted, trying to make every fanboy happy is not going to work, but when it comes down to major alterations to existing characters and franchises that's a no-no because your basically looking to pick a fight with not just a minority, but the fan base in general.

If they want to radically redesign a franchise and character, then they should start a new franchise and character. The problem is that what they are working on now is not "Devil May Cry" anymore, but something new that simply has the name and lore tacked onto it.

As far as the boobs go, I think people tend to overlook how many busty beauties there are in the media in making points like this, not to mention how women go out to get their boobs expanded and enhanced with some frequency.

This doesn't mean all female characters need to be busty, as they certainly do not, but when you start attempting to avoid it, that becomes just as big a problem. Like it or not it is part of the physical ideal of beauty nowadays, and when dealing with heroes and ideals it does come up.

As far as invoking "Enslaved"... that was generally a train wreck from where I'm sitting. I think invoking any character from that game as an example of well... anything, is kind of counter productive. Indeed I'd think that it would be one of those games that the developers would want to keep off their list of credits and prefer to avoid people associating with them. I really have heard very little to recommend that game on any level.

Out of curiousity did you play Enslaved? Since it's obvious that she only did it because she had no options whatsoever. One of the final bits of character development between her and Monkey is when she turns his headband that enslaves him off.

So he's calling Lady a prostitute and claiming that Enslaved had redeeming qualities? I hate this guy more and more every time he opens his mouth.

Also, how is gaming going to move forward if the developers of big IPs are too lazy to use a new engine and keep churning out crap with Unreal 3 which is how old now? Even shooters are starting to move away from Unreal Engine and that's the genre the engine was made for.

You do know that Capcom themselves told Ninja Theory to do this to get people talking. This isn't some unintentional backlash Capcom wanted this. Also how was Enslaved a trainwreck in any way? Gameplay wise it was fine and it's had some of the strongest writing I've played in a long time. I don't know who you've been talking to but I can't recommend it enough.

I like his comments, he seems fun and silly while still keeping the point focused and explaining his ideas on how the medium can grow.

The game, on the other hand... we'll see ;p

Whatever. I plan on paying $60 for this game regardless. If I don't like it. I'll just trade it in for the DMC HD Collection or a better game.

If I do like it, I might just add it to my list of Youtube Let's Plays, but that unreal engines is seriously going to limit any sort of fighting and number of enemies you'll be facing in the game.

From all I seen on the E3 Demo there aren't too many enemies per section which is a disappointment and there is no style meter or any sort of grading mechanism.

Call me old fashioned, but that's how I like my DMC. How it grades me and points out what I did wrong by evaluating my time, stylish points, damage taken and items used.

Taking that to heart you can learn how to seriously improve from one mission to the next.
But these are points best saved for the finished version of this game.

More or less the same question I have, Capcom already have their MT Framework engine pretty estabilished with themselves and seeing the sheer amount of scalability the engine already has, why they didn't use it?, my only guess is pretty much already answered, they were already familiar with the Unreal Engine 3 by developing Enslaved with it and they already said in past interviews that if someday they make Heavenly Sword 2, they would make it with the UE3 instead of their own engine they already had for Heavenly Sword, even if it doesn't look as pretty.

The engine itself is pretty popular already in this generation and, I guess, it has a lot more knowdeladge and support than any other engine in the industry, I'm well aware that it's not the best, but it certainly is one of the more flexible engines available.

What. the. flying. fuck.

Did game developers all start catching a bad case of the "political correcties" lately? I mean, Tomb Raider, Soul Calibur, now Dead or Alive and DMC........

We understand the desire to make slightly more realistic and "normal" women in games. We somehow feel guilty for this and that we should and try and fix it. Thats ok.

But the method to fixing it should be to create new original characters and stories, rather than fucking established franchises up. Its particularly egregious when you do it to series that are known for their characters being a certain way.

Why is Ninja Theory working on stupid Devil May Cry instead of another new and interesting IP? I want more Enslaved, or HS ported to xbox or something.
To clear things up publishers almost always own the IPs not the developers. Enslaved was supposed to be a way bigger hit than it was and Ninja Theory was supposed to be 2 teams after it's release but it bombed and barely broke even. Heavenly Sword was published by Sony so that one is obvious. Also Capcom contracted them and if they didn't accept the contract what else would they do? They make console games and without a publisher or at least a ton of money that's basically impossible.

Once again Capcom told them to do exactly that.

Does Antoniades take us for fools? There's no way he could be worse looking than the new Dante and still be allowed out in public.
Soooooo Public Flogging it is?

Nah, but I still think that statement is total bullshit about having the new Dante look like him. I won't let my negative attitude towards Tameen reflect my experience on this game, but if it does turn out to be a shit fest then I will have every right to get my money back and bask in the glorious ambiance of hate towards me when I yell out.

[HEADING=2]"I TOLD YOU SO!!!!"[/HEADING]

Mind you I do grade the DMC series rather harshly.

DMC3 is the epitome of greatness in the series with a few flaws and a difficulty curve that'll appeal to those who love classic arcade games where the computer literally skull fucks you and then calls you pansy for picking an easier game mode.
The Style System however is severely flawed and requires serious amounts of foresight and trial and error so as to select the proper style you feel is best to defeat a boss whos pattern you have no idea of unless you charge in, pants on head and raring to go.

DMC 1 is fun. Just fun. It gives you that sense of freedom. It doesn't act too linear, but the enemy diversity is lacking quite a bit and tragically the boss fight system has you fighting each boss 3 times before you really kill them.....FOR REALS YO!!
But the game does give you a sense of adventure and allows you to explore.

DMC 2 was too much of a copy and paste of DMC 1 especially with the plot and assisting characters to boot. The gameplay was subpar and wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. However I don't forgive it for making me waste time playing it

DMC 4 Half assed attempt at trying to make a good game. Instead it became mediocre and left us with a slightly more interesting character than Dante and unfortunately doesn't answer our questions concerning alot of the main plot points. Final complaint. I DON'T LIKE PLAYING A GAME BACKWARDS HALF WAY THROUGH CAPCOM!! GET YOUR HEAD OUTTA YOUR ASS!!

[HEADING=2]DMC 3: 8.5/10

DMC 1: 9/10

DMC 2: 5.5/10

DMC 4: 6.5/10[/HEADING]

Enslaved was a game that dropped almost immediatly into the bargain bins and had it's planned sequel cancelled. To be honest your pretty much the only person I've run into that has had much that is nice to say about it. Indeed when the game came out about the only real topic of discussion was the thematic issue of why it's okay for a female to enslave a guy but if the situation was reversed we'd be complaining about sexism. When that kind of conversation is the major legacy of the game (and trust me, I've been around believe it or not) that says something.

As far as Capcom directing this to generate contreversy, I've heard differant things, among them that there are internal issues over the whole matter because the way they contracted it out they lost a lot of creative control over the property. One point raised was that when Dante, who is a distinctive character who has appeared in several other properties, make an apperance in "Marvel Vs. Capcom 3" his default appearance was the one people are familiar with and prefer, which does seem to show that they haven't exactly been jumping behind supporting the new artwork. Companies rarely air their dirty laundary or give a straight answer about anything.

See, a company wants to generate conversation in a positive direction, the re-designs of Dante have not been doing that, and the character himself was doing fine as he was. What your seeing now with the character is exactly the kind of thing a company generally does not want to happen with a character.
