DmC: Devil May Cry Dev Talks Boobs

Enslaved was a game that dropped almost immediatly into the bargain bins and had it's planned sequel cancelled. To be honest your pretty much the only person I've run into that has had much that is nice to say about it. Indeed when the game came out about the only real topic of discussion was the thematic issue of why it's okay for a female to enslave a guy but if the situation was reversed we'd be complaining about sexism. When that kind of conversation is the major legacy of the game (and trust me, I've been around believe it or not) that says something.

As far as Capcom directing this to generate contreversy, I've heard differant things, among them that there are internal issues over the whole matter because the way they contracted it out they lost a lot of creative control over the property. One point raised was that when Dante, who is a distinctive character who has appeared in several other properties, make an apperance in "Marvel Vs. Capcom 3" his default appearance was the one people are familiar with and prefer, which does seem to show that they haven't exactly been jumping behind supporting the new artwork. Companies rarely air their dirty laundary or give a straight answer about anything.

See, a company wants to generate conversation in a positive direction, the re-designs of Dante have not been doing that, and the character himself was doing fine as he was. What your seeing now with the character is exactly the kind of thing a company generally does not want to happen with a character.

Also when Ninja Theory kept changing details about the plot around it made me think they were desperately trying to convince fans not to hate it before it came out.

More than likely that's exactly the reason. They didn't anticipate so much hate for the debut of New Dante and did what they could to cover their ass and state it as a Prequel and when that didn't work they declared it an alternate universe finally so that it would keep all the old and new fans happy with Dante's redesign seeing as the REAL Dante is still around.

Out of curiousity did you play Enslaved? Since it's obvious that she only did it because she had no options whatsoever. One of the final bits of character development between her and Monkey is when she turns his headband that enslaves him off.

See, this is exactly the kind of thing that leads to those "Mass Effect 3" explosions, which I think will become more and more common as time goes on (just watch). The gaming industry as a whole sits around and justifies whatever it wants to do, rather than listening to the people who pay them. Now granted, trying to make every fanboy happy is not going to work, but when it comes down to major alterations to existing characters and franchises that's a no-no because your basically looking to pick a fight with not just a minority, but the fan base in general.

If they want to radically redesign a franchise and character, then they should start a new franchise and character. The problem is that what they are working on now is not "Devil May Cry" anymore, but something new that simply has the name and lore tacked onto it.

As far as the boobs go, I think people tend to overlook how many busty beauties there are in the media in making points like this, not to mention how women go out to get their boobs expanded and enhanced with some frequency.

This doesn't mean all female characters need to be busty, as they certainly do not, but when you start attempting to avoid it, that becomes just as big a problem. Like it or not it is part of the physical ideal of beauty nowadays, and when dealing with heroes and ideals it does come up.

As far as invoking "Enslaved"... that was generally a train wreck from where I'm sitting. I think invoking any character from that game as an example of well... anything, is kind of counter productive. Indeed I'd think that it would be one of those games that the developers would want to keep off their list of credits and prefer to avoid people associating with them. I really have heard very little to recommend that game on any level.

You do know that Capcom themselves told Ninja Theory to do this to get people talking. This isn't some unintentional backlash Capcom wanted this. Also how was Enslaved a trainwreck in any way? Gameplay wise it was fine and it's had some of the strongest writing I've played in a long time. I don't know who you've been talking to but I can't recommend it enough.

Popularity =/= Quality. It was a decent game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/8188-Review-Enslaved-Odyssey-to-the-West]- lackluster combat and mediocre platforming buoyed by decent writing, quality voice work and impressive animation. It wasn't amazing, but it didn't deserve to be binned so quickly.

Well, apparently more people liked it that I got the impression was the case, but still it seems like an odd title to parade around since it was hardly a success. Especially seeing as they were talking about how well received a specific character was, when I got the impression there wasn't legions of people talking about it to begin with, and again at the time it was new, most chatter I saw about it had little to do with the game, or was fairly negative.

To be honest, I agree with you about popularity not always equalitying Quality, but at the same time quality titles that aren't massively popular tend to gain some kind of cult following of a sort I've never seen with Enslaved. When people talk about games, even game nerds, it's not a title I see come up much, even as a cult classic.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree here, it's not a game I ever had much interest in given the genere, I can only communicate what I've seen. Perhaps Ninja Theory touting that game isn't as odd as I think, but that's still how it strikes me.

As funny as it will sound, I mostly just like Dante because of his ancient crossover into "Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne" which was a cult game if there ever was one (or so it appears to me). The main Devil May Cry series never really appealed to me since it takes a very special brawler or shooter to get me to play it. I mostly stick to RPGs, strategy games, and fighting games (even if I'm pants at them).

Good to know really. If sex appeal is a big deal to sell a game, they must believe their game goes above and beyond other games of similar nature in order to take that risk.

That still doesn't make the act forgivable though. I think what I'd do in monkey's position would either be put the headband on her and see how she likes being a slave or throw her off a cliff.

Also, how is gaming going to move forward if the developers of big IPs are too lazy to use a new engine and keep churning out crap with Unreal 3 which is how old now? Even shooters are starting to move away from Unreal Engine and that's the genre the engine was made for.

Hell yeah!!! There is nothing more important than shinny graphics in games.
We need MORE games that take over 6 years to make because they have to rewrite the engine every time and still look dated. Give us more games that take like Final Fantasy XIIIs, Final Fantasy Versus, Duke Nukem Forever or Grand Turismo 5 to make.
It will be totally justified once the game is released half a decade later (although they may have to throw it away before working on the next game) with a fraction of the features other games in the genre have. Why working on superfluous things like gameplay, mechanics, netcode and story when you have better things to do, like reinventing the wheel.

If we can project ourselves to be characters with 7 foot long buster swords, onto Batman or onto characters that have big "squishy hobblers" themselves I don't think that believing we could get with any large pair of boobs out there is going to be too much of a stretch of the imagination. Prostitutes on the other hand are much easier to imagine yourself with.

Did game developers all start catching a bad case of the "political correcties" lately? I mean, Tomb Raider, Soul Calibur, now Dead or Alive and DMC........

We understand the desire to make slightly more realistic and "normal" women in games. We somehow feel guilty for this and that we should and try and fix it. Thats ok.

But the method to fixing it should be to create new original characters and stories, rather than fucking established franchises up. Its particularly egregious when you do it to series that are known for their characters being a certain way.

This guy's blatant slut shaming (in spite of his weak backpedalling) does not qualify as "political correctness".
I'm probably what people would call a card-carrying political correctoid (or "person of a certain sense and social sensitivity" as I like to think of it) and I take serious issue with this guy's statements, because in his futile attempt to decry exploitative character design he upholds the ridiculous Madonna/Whore dichotomy.

There is absolutely nothing inherently wrong with a female character having large breasts, assuming that aspect of the character isn't simply put there for the benefit of the male gaze.
Antoniades misses the point spectacularly by suggesting that it is the physical attribute alone which is exploitative, all the while talking about the female character's role as though the entirety of its function was to be attractive.

For what its worth, I think the giant breast thing has nothing to do with real or percieved immaturity compared to movies. Its that making huge breasts is just as easy as making small in games, while movies need either surgery or clunky wardrobe. When breasts can be huge with the stroke of a pen or mouse, they get huge. If the person casting a movie could choose the best actresses bust size, you can bet a c cup would be considered conservative.
