Nintendo Weighing Majora's Mask, Link to the Past Remakes

A SNES classic and N64 cult hit are both on the table.

The 3DS remake of the legendary Zelda: Ocarina of Time was one of the first 3DS games really worth owning, and Nintendo would understandably like to make lightning strike twice. Speaking with IGN [http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/06/12/zelda-3ds-its-majoras-mask-vs-link-to-the-past], Nintendo gaming guru Shigeru Miyamoto said that the house of Mario was currently deciding between remaking the beloved SNES hit A Link to the Past and Ocarina sequel Majora's Mask.

"We haven't quite decided yet, whether we're going to do A Link to the Past, because there's also the possibility of doing a remake of Majora's Mask," said Miyamoto. "This is something we've certainly been talking about and doing a little bit of experimenting with, to figure out which way we're going to go."

He noted that with the Wii U on its way, Nintendo had all of its irons in the fire - all of them. "We have so many goals right now," Miyamoto said. "We're always looking at expanding our audience and giving people the opportunity to get their hands on 3DS and see what kind of fun gaming experiences they can have. And now, we're also tasked with pushing the Wii U. So we have lots of good opportunities in terms of thinking about which Zelda game is going to be best for which purpose."

Since Nintendo had not yet decided anything, said Miyamoto, he had nothing to announce at this time.

A Link to the Past may be second only to Ocarina in the number of people who hold it up as the best Zelda games. In fact, it laid down the formula for almost all of its successors: Link collects three MacGuffins, faces a climactic event, and then must collect even more MacGuffins before going to fight the main villain (who is almost always Ganon/dorf).

Majora's Mask, on the other hand, is one of the few Zelda titles to really shake things up. Its nontraditional layout and creepy atmosphere mean that it never became as popular as some other entries in the series, but it remains a beloved cult hit for those who did play it.

So, we pose the question to you, Escaparinos: If Nintendo is remaking another Zelda for the 3DS, should it be Majora's Mask or A Link to the Past?

Majora's Mask easily. It's the more unique game of the the two and is really more deserving of the a remake. I mean what, Link to the Past is more or less the standard set up for a Zelda, so what point is there in remaking that?

Majora's Mask is my 2nd favorite Zelda game, behind Windwaker, so I would prefer that one over Link to the Past, but I would be satisfied with either choice.

I'd put my money on Majora's Mask considering it's basically a sequel to Ocarina of Time...and because they practically already have a system and graphics in place for the game considering OoT was already remade for the 3DS...

Personally, i'd also say Majora's Mask because it's probably the most unique of all the Zelda games...

If they remade LTTP, i'd expect they'd go for a 3D classics style on the eShop, keeping the sprites but making backgrounds pop more...

That being said...I don't see why they couldn't do both :D

Majora's Mask would be my gut reaction, if only because it was Ocarina of Time's direct successor.

Remaking Link to the Past again would be nearly pointless - the Gameboy Advance version was already a substantial upgrade over the original. Unless we're talking a full-3D adaptation of it, which could be fairly interesting in its own way, I'd have to say no to it.

Of course, I believe we were already more or less told that an original Zelda title would be released before any more remakes. If that still holds, anyway.

Majora's Mask definitely. That game was so good it got me to load it up recently and get up to the second boss again. The time limit really makes for an intense and fun experience and feels different from the rest. Should be remade. Also is that a HS reference I see in the article?

MM for sure. Though, it was a really difficult game to beat/get into with that stupid time mechanic. That could cause some of the less adventurous gamers to back off.

Personally IMO Link to the Past was the best in the series as I feel it had the best gameplay, but obviously Majoras Mask will win as it's practically more popular than OOT for it's dark story.

Either way, I don't want a remake, I want some good new IP's. So many remakes these days.

Can't i take a third option and say "They should do both"? No? Okay okay... tough question but i think i'll go with a Majoras Mask Remake. It's pretty much my favourite Zelda.

Then after Majora's Mask, it'll be Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and then we'll come full circle!

A Link to the Past was already remade once, so I want Majora's Mask.

As long as by "remake" they don't mean, graphical and sound update. Because as Much as I love those games they should at least make them "Second Quest" style with new dungeon layouts and what not. then again Nintendo has never been against "selling us our childhood".

I'm never going to own a 3DS. My Gamecube still works great after ten years without needing a single repair and I have the Masterquest and Collectors Edition discs, so I have six Zelda games I can play on the Gamecube (seven if you count the Masterquest version of Ocarina).

As for a Link to the Past, talk to me if they remake it on a three-dimensional-movement engine. I tried playing it but I've never been very good at the 2D top-down games (damn Keese).

They should remake Skyward Sword anyway. There is no excuse for it to be graphically inferior to Twilight Princess.

So is there going to be a "BEN (aka Haunted Majora's Mask)" remake as well? That pasta scared the crap out of me.

Remake Majora's Mask for the 3DS, and put the original version of Link to the Past on the 3DS E-store.
That's what I want. LttP was already put out for an updated system recently so I'd rather just have Majora's Mask.

Though MM on the Wii U and 3DS would be nice.

It'll be interesting to see what they do here. OoT's "remake" wasn't much of one, only slightly slightly nicer looking and could almost be considered a port. It was still awesome but didn't really change anything. I assume it will be the same with Majora's Mask and if that's the case I'm only moderately excited. Playing Majora's Mask on a hand-held would be awesome but I still have the original N64 game (as well as the Wii and GC version being out there) and it would be a pretty similar experience.

What they decide to do with A Link to the Past is far more interesting, considering it is still just a top down, 2d, 16-bit game. Would they remake it in 3D, with modern Zelda Combat? If so give me that, I'd totally be down for it. If it would still be a 2d, top down, sprite based game, what would really be different than the Gameboy Advanced version?
