Dead or Alive 5 Director: A Lot of Fans Want Bigger Breasts

Team Ninja's Yohei Shimbori on putting fans first.

Ninja Gaiden 3 didn't fare particularly well with critics, [http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/ninja-gaiden-3] but it was long-term fans that dished out the harshest criticism. Lacking Tomonobu Itagaki's influence, Team Ninja elected to take the series in a more casual friendly direction, which left a lot of fans out in the cold. Dead Or Alive director, Yohei Shimbori, claims the studio has learned from the experience.

"One of the things that I learned was the power of having a series behind you, and what it means to be part of a series," he told Gamasutra. "There are existing fans out there, and you have to think about the people who have supported the series for so long, and you want to make sure that the game that you make appeals to them first, and satisfies those fans first."

Shimbori didn't work on Ninja Gaiden 3, but the title's failure to impress its core fan base did inform his decisions when it came to Dead or Alive 5. In particular, it made him consider the series' focus on nubile young ladies with absurd, gravity-defying breasts.

"We were getting feedback from the overseas offices to tone down the sexuality -- to tone down the sexiness of the game, and of the characters," he said, before adding that fans of the series wanted the exact opposite.

"We actually got a lot of feedback from people who were playing it, saying, 'We want bigger breasts. Make the characters more like that.' That was kind of surprising."

"There's definitely still room for having sexualized aspects," he continued. "If you have a solid fighting game system there, there's nothing wrong with having beautiful characters as a layer on top of that -- that's another layer of entertainment that there's a need for. If there wasn't a need for it, people wouldn't have responded to the alpha demo like they did, and send us feedback."

While I admit I'm somewhat skeptical that Shimbori was "surprised" by the fact that a large proportion of Dead or Alive fans are fond of breasts - especially since Team Ninja has produced a number of games deliberately designed to tap directly into that demographic [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUY7PzkRkGs] - putting core fans above mainstream appeal is an admirable idea.

Why is he giving what's her face material for sexim? It's like he wants that a flame war will happen.

No...that's not creepy feedback at all. Call the plastic surgeons and get me an industrial strength car jack; we've got chests augment.

I think these girls promote a healthy diet more than objectification. Team Ninja always makes sure that they have two large cups of milk before each fight.
I have indeed seen what you did there.

But seriously, how hard is it to make a "solid fighting game"? Aren't they just reskinning the older ones with new graphic textures?

People ask them to make the characters boobs bigger just to see if they do it, and how big they make them. It's more like they are challenging them to be obscene.

I wouldn't have the uh...confidence...to ask for that kind of change, even if it was something I wanted in a particular game. So, props for that, I guess.

Vidya gamers like dem tits? Stop the presses!

Come on though, they're already ridiculously disproportionate as is. Making them even BIGGER? Didn't they do that to Ivy in Soul Calibur? There's sexualised characters and then there's circus attraction.

They've got it all wrong, it's not the size that matters but the quality of the jiggle physics. They need to innovate in that space instead.
They should take notes from this. I don't think it's possible to top it for sheer absurdity in either size or jiggliness. People have done extended analyses of it trying to work out the physics involved and come to all sorts of crazy conclusions.

Well, I'm sure that the fans of Breastfighter 5 Dead or Alive 5 will be thrilled to hear this. The rest of us will be left to puzzle out why we're always fighting this bizarre preconception that gamers are all immature manchildren.

I will counter this screwed stereotype pandering with more of the same: Doesn't our male gaming youth have large enough breasts already?

Yes because as we know if you are a gamer, you must be a fighting game fan & must own every version of DOA. /facepalm.

I say good on them, if thats what they want in there game there is no reason why they shouldn't have it. No legal reason, no moral reason, no ethical reason: Let them eat cake... Cake shapped like big bouncy boobies.

Just like all movies are not made for a single demographic, an all books aren't made for a single demographic, neither are computer/video games. If thats what these said people really want in this one specific game, i see no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to have it.
amen to that. DoA occupies that special place in the vidya game world. decent fighting game, titties galore.

Personally I prefer the old character models. That said, I could live with the new ones.

But the breast physics are the worst ever. They don't just jiggle excessively when recognizable forces of inertia are applied, as in the old ones, they sway in the wind for no reason at all. I imagine kelp waving in the ocean when I see them.

I used to think the jiggle physics in the old games were a bit over the top, but in this game they make MK Deadly Alliance look realistic, and that is seriously missing the mark right there.

As for the overall game itself, the fighting is great, they haven't ruined that, and the plethora of stages are awesome. Some serious "wow" moments occur on some stages, and this is from a longtime fan of the series. The "story" blows, I preferred the disjointed nonsensical "story" of the old games, that didn't even try to tie a narrative together, but this one is insultingly stupid, and has waaaaay too many cutscenes. Of course, I can't imagine anyone plays these games for the story.

But I'm able to have one-on-one matches with my old fighting buddy online, with minimal lag despite my crap internet connection, so I'm having fun.

I can totally appreciate large breasts, but DoA literally makes them out of water/air or something. They start jiggling for no apparent reason at any given moment.

The developers need to understand that even large breasted-females don't jiggle anywhere near as much as they seem to think they do, especially when they're wearing some kind of top clothing (even if it's a bikini/bra/whatever).

Also, inb4 the feminists come here and start crying about sexual objectification. Their whining (they call it "criticism") is about as effective to developers like these as an ant trying to push a brick across a desert (in Yahtzee's words).
