Gabe Newell Chats About Source 2 With 4chan

After 4chan stopped by Valve's offices with a surprise birthday gift, Gabe Newell hinted at what the company has planned next.

Valve is already well-recognized for Half-Life, Portal, and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118439-Valve-Valve-Time-is-a-Compliment>its extensive development times, but the developer also deserves some credit for its impressive code of silence. Ever since the Half-Life 2 source code leak, the vast majority of internal information that slips out early <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109033-Rumor-Leaked-Concept-Art-Hints-at-New-Valve-IP>tends to be in the pre-development stage or is something <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98776-Crazy-Valve-ARG-Teases-Portal-2-Update>Valve leaked on purpose anyway. So how could a person get some reliable, early information from the developer? As it turns out, the secret is to wish Gabe Newell a happy birthday. When members of 4chan stopped by Valve's offices to personally deliver a present, Valve's founder happily spent the next hour answering their questions, confirming the existence of a new Source engine in the process. (Sorry though folks, still no word on Half-Life 3.)

After Newell was given a Mann Co. Crate (containing, of course, a hat), he went into extensive detail on topics like Valve's bossless culture and projects that never saw the light of day. The most pertinent information came when Newell was asked about <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118895-Valves-Filmmaker-Code-Hints-at-Source-2>some hidden Source 2 references tucked away in Source Filmmaker's code. "We've been working on Valve's new engine stuff for a while," Newell responded, "we're probably just waiting for a game to roll it out with." When asked for confirmation that Source 2 would actually be a new engine and not an extension to previous iterations, Newell simply said "Yeah!"

Newell later referred to Ricochet 2 as the game Source 2 would launch with, although that could be a joke response to the question. Of course, it's entirely possible that Valve would use Ricochet 2 as a test run to put Source 2 through its paces, just like Counter-Strike: Source did for the original engine. As with all upcoming Valve projects however, we'll likely find out more "when it's ready".

Even a 4chan board worships the glorious Gaben.
Something's tingling inside me, but I think it's just indigestion.

Well that just made my day. :D

Gotta love the Mann Co. crate and hat present. Making him pay for the key was the icing on the cake.

VALV[sup]E[/sup] loves to joke around with its customers. Likelyhood of engine launching with Ricochet 2 is extremely high.

P.S. Thanks

What i want to know is when Gabe got dat beard.

OT: yeah it makes sense to release HL3 or whatever it will be called with a new engine. That's typically what they do with the series, release 3-4 games on it then upgrade.

I wonder how good it will be. Source blew me away back in the day, it was one of the best, if not the best engine out there and my PC couldn't really handle it well. However, nowadays Valve seems to prefer an engine that can run on older PCs, even if it doesn't look as shiny as some others.
Either way, I'm looking to see what they've got for us in the future.

Btw, some say that Ricochet 2 has become the codeword for Half-Life 3 but I wouldn't bet on it.

Props to Gaben for not calling security when he heard 4chan was at the door. Bigger props for having what looks to be a long conversation with them. Hell, I'm not a tenth as important and I can't afford to drop everything for an hour and talk to someone who walks in off the street.

If you must create a new Source engine then please work on one veeeery important aspect of it, its only three words long; but its very vital to a gaming experience:- Proper Hit Detection.

Been plaguing the source games for years now.

This is pretty cool though I've long assumed they'd move on from original source eventually and it makes sense that HL3 has taken as long as it has given they've apparently been in the process of creating that which will power their games for presumably the next decade or so. Perhaps this time around Valve will be able to get more devs to use Source2 than Source1 and everything next gen won't be running on UE4.

About the mention of Ricochet 2, that game has been used as a code for Half Life 3 in the past, so it isn't a stretch to assume that that's what they're talking about when it was mentioned. I think it's very safe to assume that Valve is not working on Ricochet 2.

The /v/ board on 4chan pretty much started the Gaben Worship trend.

Cool news, but am I the only one who's annoyed by the concept of "members" of 4chan? I mean, moot recently introduced a paid account that gets rid of the captchas (win win; he gets money to pay for the servers, they get to stop messing with recaptcha) but the vast majority of posters on that site can't really be called members, since the whole point of it is that you can post anonymously and without an account.

And before you ask, no, it has nothing to do with the old 4chan gold account scam/meme. <link=https://www.4chan.org/pass>This page explains it better.

As a proud poster on (the only mostly awful and sometimes fantastic) /tg/, /v/ is pretty much the worst thing ever. But sometimes they do good. This is one of those times.

He follows an age old technique, practised by prophets, conquerors and engineers for centuries:
1) Acquire face
2) Acquire testosterone
3) Acquire time
4) Acquire beard

OT: Oh, 4chan. You're a disgusting haven of trolls and pedophiles, but sometimes you do come up with the goods. It's not exactly a surprise that they are developing a new engine, but it's still nice to get confirmation. Now if only they had a game to go with it...

As cool as it is to hear Mr. Newell say they're essentially working on Source 2, I found two other little tid-bits far more interesting.

First was his explanation as to why they recently updated their TOS in regard to class-action suits.

Second was him talking about wanting to move towards a DRM-free release model.

This video just makes me wish even more to have the opportunity to pick that mans brain. I'd love to have a sit-down conversation with him. If only to get some insights into the inner-workings of the industry.

See, I always find this type of thing silly. 4chan isn't a disgusting haven of trolls and pedophiles.
Do they exist there? Yes.
Is that what it is? No.

4chan is the indisputable heart of The Internets.
To view 4chan is to look into the unfiltered chaos of The Internets.
It is a perfect microcosm for what you can find online.

Tumblr, Reddit, The Escapist, 9gag, etc etc etc etc, are simply more "society friendly" filters for viewing the things born from the depths of 4chan.

Judging 4chan as simple trolls and pedophiles completely misses the fact that they're a whole spectrum of different people with different agendas.
4chan is a bunch of Internet Superheroes, Internet Police, Internet Terrorists, hackers, pedophiles, animal rights protectors, the primary meme factory, etc etc etc.

Same deal with Anonymous.
I always laugh at people who try and judge Anon as a group. They're literally just whoever randomly bands together for a cause and then declares the cause as belonging to Anonymous.
I could gather a bunch of random anonymous people from The Escapist, get them to agree to donate money to Desert Bus, and then declare "Anonymous supports Desert Bus", and it'd be totally true.

Anyhow, great to hear Gabe finally talking about Source 2. Guess that means we're finally approaching a release date.
