Props to Gaben for not calling security when he heard 4chan was at the door. Bigger props for having what looks to be a long conversation with them. Hell, I'm not a tenth as important and I can't afford to drop everything for an hour and talk to someone who walks in off the street.
But this is exactly the kind of PR that's most important for a company that makes games. While other companies pander to the likes of Pachter and journalists, Gabe is convinced that his fans sell his products by word of mouth better than any indusry "guru". 4chan has one of the most vibrant and active userbases, and apart from spewing shit on a daily basis, these guys produce or popularize enormous amounts of content that circulates on the net. If 4chan likes your game, you'll see it in memes, yt comments, yt vids, raids and trolling (or lack of threreof). This means more than any Metacritic score or IGN/Gametrailers review.
What surprised me was how well he actually knew 4chan's animosities. His jab at reddit was masterful and immediately won him over the crowd.
