Yeah, we all know they were just there to get Gaben to officially endorse them for next year's Summer Cup....

Pretty awesome though. Nice to know SOME of the /v/irgins aren't complete assholes.

my favorite part was when they say that he needs to pay two fiddy for the key, and then he just pulls his wallet out right there and gives them the money

sounds nice. lets hope they are so quiet about HL 3 because of being hacked again and that they want to make HL3 with the new engine.

It will be able to effortlessly process THREE hats on one head at once.

Your head did not know warmth before Team Fortress 4.

Well this is nice. Cant watch the video at work but it looks good from the article. Well their engine was getting quite dated although still going strong. i expected them making a new engine sometime soon and got confirmation, so thats nice.

I still want to know if Valve can count to 3.

I mean they just added Source engine 2 and Ricochet 2..... Maybe it is that these guys are all computer geeks and they work in binary..... the whole concept of going beyond 0 and 1 must have been a huge step.... I can see how they would struggle with the number 3.

(I shouldn't have to put this but my post is intended to be sarcastic.... just warding off trolls.)

However, nowadays Valve seems to prefer an engine that can run on older PCs, even if it doesn't look as shiny as some others.
Either way, I'm looking to see what they've got for us in the future.
How do you come to this conclusion?
All the hardware surveys they do on Steam, it looks like they want to see what their customer's PCs can handle. Also, looking at the console support they have now and releasing steam for the Mac and now for Linux too, it's clear that they want to include as many people as possible in their products.
I don't think they would have used Source for a decade if that wasn't important to them. I'm not saying that Source 2 will not look so good but I may not be as much of a jump as it was between Goldsrc and Source.

After presenting Newell with a Mann Co. Crate (...), Newell went into extensive detail on topics like Valve's bossless culture and projects that never saw the light of day.
So he presented himself with a crate? Sorry for being pedantic, but that sentence hurts a little bit.

I'd be fairly surprised if the new engine had support for anything other than OpenGL. Leaving the xbox 720 high and dry is hardly going to hurt valve in any real way considering 5/6 of their target platforms will have openGL (PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Wii U - and no, current gen consoles wont be supported, of course they wouldn't XD).

It would also be a big FU to microsoft, and let's face it, Valve don't exactly like MS at the moment. It's also not like the 360 earns them that much money either compared to everything else, so the 720 in early life will be essentially worthless to them considering the costs of developing a directx version of every game.

That 'FU' part alone is a big enough reason to seriously consider the possibility of OpenGL only!

Haha I can't believe he paid them! I don't think I could seriously accept his money like that.

That made me laugh, thank you.

-----------

I think this is the engine that will run HL 3. I have been wondering for years if the reason HL3 being delayed was because they were creating a new engine for it.

When will source 2 come out? Next console release my guess. I doubt they can run source 2 on current console hardware.

Props to Gaben for not calling security when he heard 4chan was at the door. Bigger props for having what looks to be a long conversation with them. Hell, I'm not a tenth as important and I can't afford to drop everything for an hour and talk to someone who walks in off the street.
I'd say that if someone was even close to a tenth as important as GB then I'd still consider them a fairly big deal.

The response here is actually pretty interesting. While most of the comments seem to see a godly sieve that rumors fall out of when the planets align, I see the shrewdest company head that I can think of. His target market literally walked up to him and wanted to have a conversation, so he gave it to them. Sure, we all got some neat tidbits that we probably could have guessed (Source 2, less DRM), but Gabe is getting a chance to pick the brains of people who normally only communicate from anonymity. He can see what they fixate on in his own products and his competitors.

And, also super interesting, to me at least, is the specificity of his business related answers. He's wishy washy on upcoming content (probably because it's funny to keep people in the dark), but as far as what the future holds for his industry and company, his focus is laser sharp. There's no need for obfuscation because he's proven time and time again (as he says in the video) that no other companies really get what Valve is doing most of the time, and attempts to imitate them fail more often than not. I see a man with 100% certainty in his vision for Valve and its customers, and the billions of dollars that prove he knows what's up.

If Gabe Newell offered me a job cleaning toilets, I'd take it. Except that the janitors there probably also do sound mixing and database management.
