Xbox 360 Controller Incompatible with Xbox One

Xbox One's fancy new features will render your current collection of controllers and accessories obsolete.

With the reveal of Xbox One yesterday there came a lot of questions that Microsoft is now trying to catch up with answering. One issue the company has now addressed is whether or not Xbox 360 controllers and accessories will have any compatibility with Xbox One. The short answer, is no.

"Xbox One was designed from the ground up with entirely new technology to deliver a new generation of experiences for both games and entertainment," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "For example, the Wireless Controller will connect to the console using high speed data transfer to enable higher fidelity headset audio and future controller add-on experiences that are not possible with Xbox 360 wireless technology. Additionally, the all-new Kinect sensor's ability to locate the wireless controller is dependent on new technology. In order for Xbox One to deliver robust, meaningful gaming scenarios for all users across all experiences, only Xbox One controllers and accessories will work with the new console."

The incompatibility of Xbox 360 controllers is not all that surprising. Just from Microsoft's presentation alone it was pretty clear the Xbox One controller, while aesthetically similar, had gone through a lot of changes both externally and internally. Likewise, the inclusion of a Kinect-like sensor bar with the console itself pretty much guaranteed Kinect wouldn't be compatible or necessary. Not that we imagined many would be worried about Kinect any ways.

That said, it could still be disappointing to some that their 360 controllers won't be usable in any way, shape, or form. Whatever improvements the Xbox One controller brings to the table, there will still be some who prefer older options. Likewise, if you invested in some of the <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116629-Microsoft-Announces-Chrome-Xbox-360-Controllers>shinier 360 controllers available, you might understandably want to carry them over to the next console. Then again, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124214-Xbox-One-Not-Backwards-Compatible>Xbox One isn't backwards compatible, so chances are you're not going to be getting rid of your 360, or its controllers, anytime soon.

well, that is completely unsurprising.

I hate being anal about my nintendo bias but they are really the only ones who give a shit about backwards compatability and at least for that they need to be applauded :/

Well, that sucks. Hoped I could still use my fancy Arcade Stick on the new xbox. But to be fair, after yesterday I am not sure if the xbox one will be my console for the next generation.

Not all that surprising, really. How else are they going to get you to buy more controllers?

So how is it that we can get the controller to work on multiple versions of windows. But can't even get it to work on a new Xbox system?... Hell you can even get it to work on PlayStation 3 with external hardware. Sounds like it could solved by a driver. But in the end, all comes down to more money!.

Oh for fuck sake people, there are a lot of things that you could point out as being a poor choice on Microsoft's end, but come the fuck on, this is a controller, are we really that anal? I mean, geez, I get that people are disappointed/livid at the Xbox One and it's features but this is just 1 tiny little controller. You get one when you get the console (please let me be right about that future events) and that's the way every console has been. Can we please stop being angry at such miniscule things like this? Yeah, controllers are expensive (nearly the same price as a new game last I checked), but with the way things are going split screen is becoming far less frequent, so the need for multiple controllers is no longer as necessary as back in the PS2/1, Gamecube, 64, you name it.

So in this whole huge mess of Microsoft's war on used games, lack of BC (Which really isn't a big deal, just hold onto your old console), needing to connect to the internet once every 24 hours, more a focus on tv rather than games...ah fuck this is depressing, but beside all that, can we just take a deep breath and look at the crap that is actually a problem, and the stuff that isn't such a big deal.

You are asking people on the internet to relax. The same kind of people who has already decided that the PS4 wont next generation because it will provide the best console, the best service and the best games. Yeah, your words are wasted.

Just like with backwards compatibility this kinda makes sense. They make some changes which makes the the old software and hardware incompatible. While I would have liked to use my old controllers on the new Xbox I understand the problems with that. However with all the other news I have heard about it I see enough reasons not to get a Xbone anyway so I don't really care if my controllers are compatible or not.

Can't say I'm all that surprised at this news, and can't say that it is all that important to me either.

"The new Xbox One was designed to be an all-in-one home entertainment system."

No backwards compatibility, not even the controller? So we'll have two boxes under our TV? Marketing fail and a half that one is.

Yeah I know, but just because you can't move that stone doesn't mean you should stop trying.

Worked out for him:

Yeah, I think saying PS4 has it in the bag, simply because you look at this generation and the Nintendo DS is basically the winner.

I'm already awaiting for the next news "Xbox One only compatible with ONE controller - If you want to play with friends then buy a second console :D"

I'm curious whether there will be a PC/Windows version like with the 360 wireless controller.

If not, that indicates what MS thinks of PC gaming.
Actually, what would be the point? If you already have a 360 controller, why would you use the Xbox One controller for PC gaming with a controller? They're near on the same. Unless the controller has something secret yet to be revealed that benefits PC gaming, there is no reason to bother upgrading.

I have one question...

Seriously, the more I hear about these next gen consoles, the more I wish for a meteor to strike the collective gaming industry dead so it can rebuild their shit from the ground up.

To be honest, maybe it's the crappy lighting on this photo but the curve on it looks majorly uncomfortable for small hands...

And I have stupidly small hands.

Well, to be fair, of the two hardcore gaming consoles, one of them doesn't need an online connection, allows used games without a fee, doesn't come with Kinect, and uses a media system to allow some old games to be played. One of them doesn't. I wouldn't call the first one a "clear" winner yet, but it's hard to say they're even right now.
Neither console is out yet so they are even by pretty much every definition. I expected that the Wii was going to fail harder than the GameCube (I love both consoles though) and I was proven quite wrong there. We are too hasty in our judgement and I think we should wait to see what the consoles offer before we decide the winner. Personally the Xbox has already lost in my book and for the first time ever I actually want a console to fail, but if it actually will win or lose is yet to be determined. People are willing to take quite a lot of abuse to support whatever they're fan of, trust me, I'm a fan of the Tales series living in Europe and I still love them after the abuse they've put me through.

To be fair to those complaining, it isnt just the 360 controller that is not compatible, it also includes specialised controllers like those used for fighting games, the expensive MadKatz arcade sticks and that types... fighting fans will have to fork out for a new expensive set of sticks for the next gen fight game, or get the PS4 I suppose.

So dont be too quick to judge complainers as anal here, it can mean a difference between £20, and £100 for some... would you be happy to toss out that £100 controller because the next box isnt compatible with it, and wouldnt you be curious if the PS4 is compatible with it ?
