Xbox One "Will Do Very Little" Without Day-One Patch

Albert Penello of Microsoft says the Xbox One will be essentially useless without the launch day update.

It's no secret that Microsoft will have a day-one patch [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128356-Xbox-One-Will-Need-15-20-Minutes-to-Download-Launch-Patch] waiting for the Xbox One when it comes out, but it will probably come as a surprise that it's more than just your usual spot of updating. Penello, Microsoft's director of product planning, told Endgadget that an out-of-the-box console will do "nothing" without the day-one patch.

"You need the day one update," he said. "Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update."

The issue, Penello explained, is that the Xbox One is being shipped with an old and, from the sounds of it, incomplete version of the operating system. "A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn't have even been done," he said. "You're gonna need to take this update. It's not gonna be really an optional thing."

Microsoft made a lot of noise about dropping its online DRM [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125204-Microsoft-Drops-Xbox-One-DRM-Restrictions-UPDATED] for the Xbox One back in June, but it seems clear that the system's functionality is still going to be heavily dependent on connectivity. It likely won't be a problem for owners in well-serviced areas with fast, reliable internet, but not everyone is in the boat, believe it or not - and even those who are might find it a little hairy when half the planet is trying to nab the update at the same time.

So if I don't want to or can't connect Xbox One to the internet, I guess I can just not buy it. Thanks for the heads up, Microsoft!

(The majority of audiences will be offline users. Same as with this generation. Most of the world doesn't have internet. Also, though, most of the world wants to play videogames - well, games in general, but videogames fit the bill.)

... Is it legal to sell something like that? If it can't do anything without the patch then can you say it's working as advertised?

I wonder if they'll need large signs everywhere similar to what Gamestop did with used games that had online passes so consumers know ahead of time.

"You need the day one update," he said. "Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update."
What's very little? The Setup screen + eula? Hopefully it can at least play games out of box...

Way to go Microsoft. I mean I already knew you were fucking stupid, but this is beyond what I thought even you were capable of. Shipping the thing with an incomplete OS, WTF?

I will laugh my little socks off in cynical fashion if one of these functions will be playing a game.

Translation: The Xbox One wasn't anywhere near ready for release, but Microsoft needed to beat the holiday rush.

Like everyone already knew, day 0 patch is there to remove mandatory connect, and without madatory connect it wont work, so you have to downlaod the patch and thus have internet anyway.
Also it seems that they spent 8 years to build a console and still released it long before it was ready to release. and that seems to go for both companies.

They already officialy responded to that. their response? buy Xbox 360.

ALso statistically over 53% of the world has internet. and thats counting locations where they dont even have electricity. or well, rather i should say 53% of worlds population have acess to internet. That is not to say they ahve internet. for example my grandparents have acess to it, all they would need to do is go to ISP and sign a contract, but they dont use it so no internet there.
The quality of such internet however..... yeah life is dissapointing.

I thought it wouldn't work full stop without the update.
Well, it woudl turn on, and tell you it couldnt find internet, so technically it would "work" but it wouldnt do much with it.

considering that the DRM is still in place on the Xbox and it will only be disabled by the patch, i very much doubt it.

Your implying microsoft OS releases were ever complete at launch date. Really most OS only became stable enough to use normally after multiple fixes and patches. And some never did (im looking at you vista).

I'm beginning to think this is all some deliberate ploy by Microsoft to allow them to come out and say the console market is no longer profitable and pull out of it. I mean, they couldn't be so stupid as to actually believe this is going to want to make people buy their console right?

So you can't even play games on it till you do the update. That's brilliant.

I used to dream how amazing it would be if company's could make updates to consoles and their games to improve them and expand, but it's continuously used as an excuse to release unfinished products. I guess I'll get over it since so many find it acceptable, but because of crap like this, I will never buy any electronics and games on day one, or day 50 even.

I can't wait to see what other surprises Microsoft has for us.

People chewed Nintendo out for the WiiU day 1 patch, so I expect to see a certain amount of criticism for the XBox One and PS4 (probably) for doing the same thing. I wish things were as simple as plug-and-play back in the day, even if S-Video was one of the more fiddly cables I've ever had to stuff into my TV, but next-gen must be ALL THE ENTERTAINMENT, ALL INTERNET, ALL THE STUFF YOUR COMPUTER DOES BUT WORSE!!

Yes, for those of you that are wondering, you will be unable to play games if you do not download the patch:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2013/11/09/xbox-one-requires-day-one-patch-to-play-video-games/

However, you will need to download a one-time, day one patch for the system. And without it you won?t even be able to play video games.
My reaction depends on the size of the download. If it's less than 1GB, then whatever. It's a shame, but hopefully most people will be able to get it done in less than an hour without much fuss. Day One patches are just a thing that we do now with launch hardware, I guess. I mean, the Wii U's was 1GB iirc. Sony's will be 300 MB. Microsoft says it's a 20 minute patch, whatever that means. Eh.

I'm given the impression that Microsoft will release a new chipset revision next year with all the current updates included; much like they did with the 360 multiple times. I guess people without internet will get to partake then.

Hope you have an online connection, kiddies.

Then again, the entire target audience for the system is getting Gears of War, Halo, and Call of Duty multiplayer, so they pretty much have them covered.
Don't forget the NFL, because apparently there is DLC or something like that... Oh and you can now watch TV...

Why do I think that Microsoft is becoming like Vanille from FF13? There is a physical presence, but anything they do is very subtracted from the reality everyone else is in...

How can anyone with even the slightest bit of intelligence be surprised by this news? They were forced to drastically alter their strategy for the One very late in the development cycle. Of course they're going to have to patch it day 1, most of the launch consoles were likely built and loaded with the software that assumed their cloud-based DRM would be used.

Please use a little bit of common sense before jumping on the MS hate bandwagon for once...

>People ***** and complain about the DRM
>people ***** and complain about the patch that kills the DRM and completes the OS that MShad to redo as a result of getting rid of the DRM

Damned if they do, dammed if they don't.

Solid job guys.
