Titanfall Will Have Giant Hostile Monsters

As if Titanfall's titular giant robots weren't enough, some maps will feature monstrous wildlife - and they aren't friendly.

There's a lot of hype around Titanfall, and for good reason - if you've played the beta, you know how intense the matches can get. Now that everyone's had a taste, though, you might think you've seen everything the game has to offer. Think again: an early peek at the pre-release book The Art of Titanfall reveals that some of the maps in the game feature roaming AI creatures, from smaller beasts to colossal monsters that will make your Titan look like an ant.

The preview, courtesy of IGN, reveals several Titanfall maps that we haven't seen yet. Many are fairly standard battle arenas, though it's obvious that there's plenty of lore behind each location (which will probably play a big role in the game's multiplayer campaign storyline [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132297-Titanfall-Will-Feature-a-Campaign-Multiplayer-Mode]). Some, however, are set on planets filled with alien creatures that fought back against the settlers. A map called Boneyard, in particular, takes place on a planet called Leviathan, named after the jaw-dropping creatures that forced the IMC colonists to abandon the settlement. And they're still there.

Some monsters "will walk or fly around levels harmlessly until people interfere. Others will attack when you just stare at them." The massive leviathans, it seems, won't enter the combat area. This is probably because they could crush entire buildings without noticing, but in-game, they're warded off by "dog whistle" machines that emit sonic pulses to keep the wildlife out. Maybe this map will feature an objective where the Militia attempts to turn off the emitters, letting the monsters destroy the outpost?

You can research and speculate for yourself when The Art of Titanfall is released on February 25. The full game will be following not long after, with a launch date of March 11 for PC and Xbox One.

Wait...limited team, underpowered minions to bolster forces, random wildlife...I'm starting to think this is as close to a First Person Shooter MOBA as we're ever going to get.

Well that's the first thing I've heard about this game that actually sounds interesting and different, kinda. Using mechs against giant monsters is a scene I can play a million times. We can have mods that put King Kong and Godzilla in.

Goddammit.

I hate those devs so much right now.

There I was, minding my own business, writing Titanfall off as just another version of CoD... When suddenly they introduce giant monsters.

I didn't want to want this game.

But damn is this cool.

You know... no matter how broken yet fun the beta was, no matter how cool the mechs were, and no matter how cool Respawn is towards its consumers...
I hate that they announce something this amazing in what was apparently supposed to be just a generic free running shooter, yet I still need ORIGIN TO PLAY THE DAMN THING.

This is starting to sound more and more like a buy for me if EA wasn't breathing down my goddamn neck.

Really sorry Respawn. Shame there's such a fine game underneath all the dickery that is EA.

although the regular game seems cool a little too much like cod with mechs, i think the idea of that mixed combat of infantry and mechs fighting off mixed mobs of monsters from small to big sounds even more cool, with the mechs having weapons that can ether specialize for fighting a set type of monster, big, small, or even flying, while the infantry have to work together to keep the smaller monsters from mobing the mechs and to go into buildings, or caves.

I think this just switched from a "maybe-buy, someday" to "buy the second it's confirmed as having a stable launch". God-damn Shadow-of-the-Collossus nostalgia. Well played Titanfall, well played.

same. kudos for the creepy design, though. I wonder how the american military that apparently saved the day in the movie version managed to deal with that. XD

giant hostile monsters? I can dig it, sure... but will titanfall... have titans?

throw those in, and I'll buy your game. this from a man who loathes multiplayer-focused FPS games. XD

Well normally by this point I would have put down a pre-order for this but sorry Respawn, my rule of 'Never buy anything published by EA' has saved me far too much grief and money for me to even consider breaking it for some (admittedly deserved) hype.

This news makes me sad :/

why? Cause Before this bit of news, I'd have thought about getting it if not for Origin, from what I've seen of the game play looks pretty fun.

But this?

This pushed it from 'yeah I'll think about it' to 'Yup, sign me up for some of that', course then I remember its Origin only for PCs and it makes me frown.

so yeah, this is the FPS that Could have gotten me into online shooters where EA not attached to it like the cancer they are.

I'm so glad other people made that connection, as they do look straight out of the movie. I also agree that this is a pretty fantastic reveal. The game still isn't my cup of tea, but it's really nice to see the developers aren't pulling any punches here.

you arent the only one. id dismissed it and this perked up my interest. i still wont get it though i dont think. its too fast and frantic for me
I'm hoping that once it's popular, they focus on putting the game play to better use by making a proper single player for it, because the quick pop and squeeze of this multiplayer type blurs it to the point where everything just becomes a gimmick. Fingers crossed

Anyone else have a sudden flash of Attack on Titan? I mean really they wall running and jet packs, then add in the mechs vs giant creature. As epic as it sounds it doesn't seem like it could turn out so fluidly.

That was my second thought. Grinding grunts getting your gear and then laying waste to the big mob in the center of the map. Just don't call it a MOBA or the cool kids won't play it.
