Gamers Show Appreciation With #welovegamedevs

[tweet t="https://twitter.com/keefstuart/status/502734176727355392"]
The #welovegamedevs hashtag is a chance for gamers to show appreciation to creators.

After voice actors, game developers are the celebrities of the video game industry. As such, they are the targets of praise and criticism, mostly criticism. After a considerably tumultuous week in the games industry, The Guardian's Keith Stuart asked gamers to take a moment to thank the creators of their favorite games with the [a href=https://twitter.com/hashtag/welovegamedevs?src=hash]#welovegamedevs hashtag[/a].

The tag started early this morning and was trending in the US within three hours, before most of the country had started their day. Developers like [a href=https://twitter.com/insomniacgames/status/502757244228751361]Insomniac have shown their appreciation[/a] for the tag, and even [a href=https://twitter.com/PlayStationEU/status/502758425106067456]Sony has gotten in on the hashtag[/a]. The tag has also split off to the #welovegames tag as well.

If you're a fan of any particular development companies or individual developers in the games industry, maybe take a moment to tweet some love. Twitter puts players in connection with creators and plenty of people use this to lob criticisms and harassment at devs. Now seems like a perfect time to show our appreciation to the people that make the games we enjoy.

[a href=http://www.theguardian.com/profile/keithstuart]Keith Stuart[/a], who started the tag after some controversy sparked this past week in the games industry, is the games editor for The Guardian.

Absolutely despicable. The Escapist knows of the controversy, is willing to mention the controversy, is willing to make a news report about a twitter tag (but somehow not about #4chan4woman and #4chan4women)

But posting about the controversy is somehow above them because THAT is tabloid bullshit? I don't feel like saving this for the other thread.

Video games journalism, if you want us to love you, you had better earn it first.

Mike Hoffman, this is an appalling excuse for journalism, and thanks to you the Zoe thread will probably rocket up to 4000 replies about why this is simply wrong.

How exactly is this news, but the controversy isn't?

Has The Escapist really gotten this bad?

Whilst it's great that people "Love" devs, others are a bit more choosy about who they devote themselves to.

Threw in a couple of tweets myself, mentioning the likes of Mike Bithell, Hideki Kamiya and Hideo Kojima as well as companies like Rare, Atlus, Firaxis (who even favourited it :3) and even the "Big Three" of Nintendo, Sony and Xbox.

I may complain about these companies from time to time, but they've made a lot of stuff that I've really enjoyed, and hell, gotten me through the odd tough time in my life, so it's nice to see them celebrated for once.

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING, ESCAPIST?

Are you doing this on purpose, or have you managed to miss the biggest thread that's blighted this site all year?

If you're doing this on purpose, then I <3 you for it and would join in the festivities if I had Twitter. If you genuinely don't expect what's going to happen next... I don't have words.

Nice attempt Mike, Yes we love game developers for their work. Without them there would be no games to play.

Tat said, not all developers are the same and not all developers behave equally. We love game development. Developer is a person and I reserve my opinion on each separately as a person. Just making something we enjoy is not a personality, nor a person.

You're kidding me right? This is ... this ... AAAAAAAH, I'm saving it for the other thread. As for this particular topic: Good for those devs that do have a heart. And I hope we all take this chance to show The Fine Young Capitalists some love as well, because they more than earn it at this point.

PRo-Tip: COMMENTERS, save it for the other thread.

For those of us not in the know, could somebody who is aware of more details about this particular controversy provide a link to where I can find out some basic info? I tried googling "Game Developer Controversy" but it turns out there are a lot of those.

EDIT: I have been informed the name connected to this controversy is "Zoe Quinn" for anybody else wondering.

Yes, I'm horribly confused myself. I read the article and thought "Hey, that's pretty cool". But apparently Escapist is doing something evil by posting this article.

You're better off not knowing, trust me, it's not worth it. No matter what everyone else in that massive Off-Topic thread might think.

OT: I don't have Twitter, so I can't really get in on this. Oh well.

Uh...

I love Metal Gear Solid and think Hideo Kojima is brilliant #welovegamedevs ???

Can I just say that your profile picture REALLY annoys me! Like it gives me a headache just looking at it.

They aren't stupid. They just have a little more sense than every fool who has made a comment on the subject in the past few days, a black hole from which there is no escaping! Ignore the storm like a sensible person. Batten down the hatches, it will blow over.

It started with this: http://thezoepost.wordpress.com/

It's a long-ass read, but worth it. There is a tl;dr section though.

Though it seems instead of focusing on all the emotional abuse Quinn put the guy through, people are focusing on the sex bits. Can't say I'm surprised, but still. Really wish that part wasn't being so ignored.

Well, let Andy Shandy explain [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.858638-Arent-you-guys-going-a-little-overboard-with-the-Quinnspiracy#21291374].

Andy Shandy said:
- Man makes blog post about a woman cheating on him with 5 guys (not at once, as far as I'm aware) all of whom are related to the games industry in some way

- One is a journalist, Nathan Grayson. His coverage of her game extends to 3 words "Powerful Twine darling" in a list of 50 Greenlight games. And an article which mentions her as part of that game jam that went down the shitter.

-

Beyond that, I'm not even sure any more. Some are shouting about journalistic integrity (in which case you'd figure the focus would be on Nathan Grayson not Zoe Quinn), some about censorship, some about "slut-shaming". But for a variety of reasons, this is the place to discuss it, since rightfully or wrongfully, nowhere else does.

Just a thought.
You're the first reply to this thread. You should probably edit this link into your post up there, to make it super-easy for people to find (and to avoid even more confused people).

well many of us were trying to focus on the implications on the gaming press.

Men can't undergo emotional abuse, saying that makes you an MRA sexist pig. I would like to see that aspect focused on too, its pretty awful. But the line of argument that has been perused is that this is private. And so those who are troubled by this are trying to express the public interest of exposing incestuos relationship between press and developer. Every issue raised has been swatted away as hatred and conspiracy.
And that's how abuse like this thrives, by keeping this shit private. It's why 99% get away with this and never face any sort of repercussions for their actions. If it's kept private, 99% of the time they'll just go on to abuse someone else. The only way to get an abuser to answer for what they did is to make it public, so everyone can see how horrible they really are. Otherwise, as I said, they won't face any repercussions, won't change, and will just do it to someone else.
