The instructions are poorly worded and confuse me. Can we use #welovegamedevs if we are not journalists having sex with game devs?

Also good scoop Escapist, this was a quality story.

A nice gesture, but ultimately futile as it's too late for damage control.
Trust has been severed for many. The question now is "How many?"

Given the recent controversy I'd like to show my appreciation to all the developers of my favorite games I don't know because they have no interest in any life as a media whore. So thank you to a lot of the people at Atlus, NIS, X-Seed, Namco Bandai, and too many indies to count: thank you for doing your job and not looking for your 15 minutes for anything but the quality of the games you make.

This is painfully transparent damage control, packaged in a nice inoffensive fluffy happy package. You're a gamer right? How could you NOT like gamedevelopers?

Oh right, when they're morally corrupt, insular, insulting, censor criticism, lash out at their customer base, and cover up a massive and damaging story.

It's sad when AAA devs come out of this looking far preferable to this indie cluster***. At least AAA developers have PR departments that try to prevent them from saying and doing stupid things. These developers (and the game journalists who are in bed with them, figuratively of course) have completely flown off the handle, and now they expect us to just bow down and worship them.

This is NOT a time to be happy with the games industry.

We're fucking gamers. Why on Earth would we not love game devs? At what point during this "recent controversy" has anyone ever said they hate game devs?

This is obfuscation of the highest calibre. It's an attempt to redirect public attention from this instance of corruption and nepotism by claiming it's an anti-developer hysteria and hate-filled harassment campaign. The Escapist should be ashamed of their role in it; Mister Tito especially for his contradictory editorial stance and his refusal to publish something which is newsworthy and hand-wave it as a "recent controversy."

Surprisingly, most of us actually want some reform. If a senator slept with a journalist at the New York Times without either side disclosing their relationship (and even if the journo didn't specifically write articles about the subject), there'd be a scandal. But it's fine for that to happen in this industry? And anyone who gets enraged over it is branded as cruel and misogynistic?

I and many others aren't planning on letting the issue die down peacefully and allow these pitiful and blatant attempts to redirect public attention succeed. Even if it manages to dim the spotlight for a few days or weeks, this topic won't be dropped.

I don't share your outrage however your opinion is apt. This situation could have been handled in a much more professional matter. However, keep in mind (not excusing mind you)that Mr. Tito and others are just humans and not PR specialist. Very few people have the training to properly handle these situations.

I would say that this has further lowered my trust in the industry and gaming journalism except that I have lost all respect for their integrity long ago. I take everything reported or handled as "half-truths" or agenda-driven moves.

Oh boy, this article REALLY wasn't a good idea, especially with this part in particular:

Mike Hoffman said:
Twitter puts players in connection with creators and plenty of people use this to lob criticisms and harassment at devs.
...and this a well:

[a href=http://www.theguardian.com/profile/keithstuart]Keith Stuart[/a], who started the tag after some controversy sparked this past week in the games industry, is the games editor for The Guardian.
The way that this is worded makes this entire thing seem like a poor attempt at redirecting people's attention away from the Zoe Quinn controversy while simultaneously demeaning her critics, which is only going to server to piss people right the fuck off even more than they already were. Seriously, they would've been better off not even passively mentioning the controversy in this article.

On Topic: This is overall a good thing still. Right now, people could really use some positivity, so a reminder that we are all gamers and love to geek out about our favorite games / devs may be just what some of us need. Remember kids: RULES OF NATURE! XD

Captcha: "filthy dirty mess" Le sigh, even Captcha knows.

I would hope it goes without saying that you can love some game developers without loving others. I don't feel any particular need to lavish love on some of the developers of games on Steam that Jim Sterling has highlighted on the Jimquisition, for example.

(Even if I was on Twitter, which I'm not.)

I think it's also fairly clear that some of the vitriol (and worse) that gets thrown at game developers is wildly out of proportion or undeserved. David Vorehaar getting death threats for changing the timing on a few guns in COD:BOII, for one example.

I think these are reasonable and relevant points we ought to be able to agree on.

Is the timing questionable?

...I'm not going to touch that question with a ten-foot-pole, thanks.

Ooooh my God, there are so many opportunities here. What should I go for? The low-hanging fruit like Xiado up there? Sarcastic positivism? Maybe I should just write a giant post about how gamers had been berated and condemned by their media for a while now, so this is kinda like karmic justice.

Meh, I think I'll just go with this: The Gaming industry done fucked up, and this is obvious redirection and damage control. Which is sad, actually. I'd love it if our community was just naturally this positive. If we just started shit like this because, hey, we're all gamers in the end, and our community exists to celebrate that. Instead, we breed resentment towards each other for the stupidest reasons. And before anyone gets on me about that comment - everyone is implicit there. Gamers, devs, and journalists alike have done nothing but sow infighting and vitriol in the gaming culture. More stuff like this could have helped to repair that.

Too bad it's obvious attempt to put out fires. Even worse, it's just fanning the flames instead.

The Escapist has really done everything it can to offload any credibility, they're refusing to be honest while pumping moral lectures

What if, due to an unstable temporal space vortex, this story was transported back in time to Zoe Quinn's computer, and her misunderstanding of the message led to this whole problem in the first place?!?

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE ESCAPIST! ;)

Also can I exclude most of EA from my "welovegamedevs", cause I really hate them (or their management at least)

I guess my most recent one would be Starbreeze. Thanks for creating Brothers: Tale of Two Sons and making me cry harder than any work of fiction has ever made me cry before.

If Brothers made you cry, try to play Mother 3. Shit makes Brothers seem like a walk in the park with the feels.

LOL! Dat scrambling for damage control, while covering up and misdirecting.

No one is unappreciative of game devs. But the timing of this. LOL.. We're not stupid

For those of us not in the know, could somebody who is aware of more details about this particular controversy provide a link to where I can find out some basic info? I tried googling "Game Developer Controversy" but it turns out there are a lot of those.

EDIT: I have been informed the name connected to this controversy is "Zoe Quinn" for anybody else wondering.
Somebody claiming to be Zoe Quinn's ex posted a bunch of images implicating her in having cheated on said ex-boyfriend (whom they were together with at the time) with up to five other people in the game industry, including a writer for Kotaku. Quite frankly, I don't even know if this is actually her ex, and the internet has been known for partaking in shenanigans regarding anybody involved with the gaming community online that identifies as a feminist opening[footnote]http://imgur.com/a/y8jII[/footnote], and ex-partners aren't exactly known for treating their former parters with utmost respect, so I'm kind of iffy on this being legit, personally. If it is true, though, it means that a few people in the industry had a conflict of interest that they hid from us, a breach of ethics, which is a big deal.

A lot of sites aren't reporting on this, and are shutting down the conversation. Some people are treating it like "OMG CONSPIRACY!", but personally, I think its much more mundane - nobody wants to be ground zero for the biggest flame war in the internet community since Anita Sarkeesian's Kickstarter, and nobody wants to report on something that might not even be legitimate. Plus, its kind of foot-in-mouth to any site that previously defended her when she was reportedly harassed.
I would believe this were the case, specifically not reporting on something that might not be true, had the Escapist not done just that back in 2013 when they reported on a story involving Zoe Quinn being harassed with only her word as evidence. This time however the accusations are against corrupt game journalist and Zoe Quinn and the person making them has far more evidence then Zoe had and yet...... Radio Silence.

I can understand why people would be frustrated. If The Escapist was planning on ignoring the controversy they should have avoided everything spring from it as if it were the black plague.
