HuniePop Dev Offers $1 Million for Right to Publish Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 in US

"I saw the story that Koei wasn't going to bring the game to the west and thought it an absolute crime."

In August of this year, Team Ninja's Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 was announced [https://www.facebook.com/deadoralivegame/posts/716716955099059] for PlayStation 4 and Vita, although it was revealed at that time that it would be made "exclusively for Japan and Asian market."

Producer Yosuke Hayashi a post on the game's official Facebook page [http://gematsu.com/2015/08/dead-alive-xtreme-3-might-come-west-demand-high-enough], the decision not to publish the game in the West was made in order to avoid the ongoing debate surrounding depictions of women in video games.

"Do you know many issues happening in video game industry with regard to how to treat female in video game industry? We do not want to talk those things here," the post reads. "But certainly we have gone through in last year or two to come to our decision. Thank you."

Publisher Koei Tecmo Europe clarifying in a second tweet [https://twitter.com/koeitecmoeurope/status/669156347213127681] that they don't approve of placing the blame for the decision on anyone.

On November 25, the developer of PC dating sim/puzzle game HuniePop [http://store.steampowered.com/app/339800/] jumped into the discussion, offering $1 million to Koei Tecmo in exchange for the rights to publish DOAX3 in the United States.

"Basically I saw the story that Koei wasn't going to bring the game to the west and thought it an absolute crime," Ryan Koons, owner of HuniePot Inc., told The Escapist. "Like many others I love the DOAX series and want to see it come stateside."

"I'm still uncertain as to just how pathetic an offer of $1M really is," Koons continued. "On one hand these guys surely make millions and millions of dollars with each release and on the other if you look at, say, the Steam sales for DOA5, maybe $1M isn't too shabby."

Koons stressed that this offer should not be viewed as a political statement or any sort of grandstand: It is, in fact, a legitimate offer.

"No statement is worth a million dollars to me. People pretty much know where I stand on these issues already. It's a legitimate offer. I don't expect Koei to even acknowledge the offer though I'm prepared to get to work if they did."

"But I'll add this," Koons continuted. "If my little wave adds to the storm that eventually gets Koei to just publish the thing themselves; mission accomplished."

We have reached out to Koei Tecmo for comment, and will update this story with any new developments.

Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is scheduled to release on February 25th, 2016. Import retailer Play-Asia will be offering an English version of the game through its website [http://www.play-asia.com/english-release-of-dead-or-alive-xtreme-3-fortune/venus-confirmed-for-asia/5f/746wd?ref=twitter].

Well, that was certainly not a news story I was expecting to read.

I guess HuniePop sold a whole lot better than I originally expected.

Hope they don't expect that thing to sell like hot cakes, The best selling of that series barely broke Half a Million Units [http://www.vgchartz.com/game/482/dead-or-alive-xtreme-beach-volleyball/] and it's sequel got like Half of that [http://www.vgchartz.com/game/481/dead-or-alive-xtreme-2/].

Hell, I think they would make more money from The HuniePop Devs buying publishing rights then from the game itself.

I don't think that's really why they didn't want to release it here; I think that's just trying to cover for bad sales projections.

That said, the idea is worth discussing. I don't really feel like a Progressive ideology nor the public good is very well served when the outcome is identical to a Puritanical one. I think it's very possible to serve shallow titillation and further the inclusivity of the medium writ large; you accomplish this by injecting more variety, not less.

So cancelling it really just sort of fuels the problem.

Second game was a suckbox exclusive. Saying it got half of the first game's multiplatform sales is disingenuous in context. DOAX3 is a PS4 exclusive which has a MASSIVE install base.

The thing is, isn't HuniePop was a success given to it gameplay (everyone are into gaming puzzle these days) and the whole dating thing wasn't so sterotypical while DOA:X3 is just the DoA girls in bikini and volleyball to be played?

...But the first game was also a Xbox Exclusive?... [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_or_Alive_Xtreme_Beach_Volleyball]

Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball is a beach volleyball game by Tecmo released in 2003 exclusively for the Xbox.
The Sequel was an Xbox 360 exclusive and did even worse, I don't think this series ever had a multi platform release.
Hell, 3 would be the first time it wouldn't be on an Xbox.

An indie game developer I have never heard of until today has $1M to throw around?

Never underestimate the horny male demographic.

I did hear something like that, Hell, a female friend of mine got a copy of the game as a joke and she like has 15 hours clocked.
Meanwhile, when has Volleyball ever been a really engaging experience in video games?

Ok yes Volleyball isn't as grand compared to Football or racing games etc but Beach Spikers was a great game! I felt so proud getting my team to the top of the league and I wasn't caring about their chest sizes.

Uh.. can't anyone who actually wants it just import it? Koei are probably getting all the sales they want/need via that route, so don't actually need to bring it over.

He's also kind of a crappy person, depending on your views on women. :p

Edit: Not as bad as James Deen, but I'll let you research THAT one on your own.

Yeah, might have had something to do with the sales, considering how "Well" Xbox goes in Japan.

Well, At least we can see where the effort was put into on the two games.
I just don't think Sports games really do too well with the "Core" gamers, unless it has Mario in the title or has something major to set it apart from the annual sports stuff.

That and with the sales figures, it makes a lot more sense then shipping out possibly millions of disks and only selling like 300k of them.

I don't know, niche games like this tend to come from developers who are open about that type of thing. I've honestly lost count of the number of times a Japanese studio has stated sales projections are the reason they aren't taking a game to the West. If they're saying it's because they don't want to deal with the games journalism industry here that is dominated by bloggers who got grandfathered into where they are, I'm inclined to believe them.

I don't think a handful of blogs with maybe 1,000 average views apiece are going to match a site like IGN or GiantBomb. From what I can tell, Play-Asia was trying to start a non-troversy to see how many easily-manipulated people (mostly men) were going to bite the bait.

I don't think you understand, IGN and GiantBomb are exactly the people I'm talking about. The major gaming sites in the US are dominated by people who are just bloggers who where at the right place at the right time when the industry went through its massive shift in the late 90s/early 2000s from being a niche hobby into a mainstream form of entertainment.
