Im really not surprised, I've phsycologically desensitised myself to more or less evrything.
The law should not just protect people from each other but also from themselves.
They should make an example of this girl with some kind of ironic punishment

The Government.

Sure, we have disasters, crimes, and financial crises causing us trouble, but hey. We caught this 14 year old on the internet!

Becoming a registered sex offender? Really? You're going to destroy her life based on one (admittedly stupid) mistake?
Yes...because the government gets bored doing nothing...so every now and then they try to do something and then remember they are idiots. So instead they pretend to do something and then go back to doing nothing.

Was making the pics unbelivibly stupid? Yes.

Does she deserve to be charged as a sex offender? Or with anything for that matter? No!

She was stupid to put them on the internet. Frankly, she's an idiot. You KNOW you're underage, you shouldn't be taking naked photo's of yourself, and if you are: Don't post them on myspace.

it's hard to believe that the police are going to look at you - especially when you see so many people getting away with crazy stuff.
I don't think the police would have been trolling Myspaz looking for it, someone would have reported it. Or one of her friends would have told their mother when they saw the pictures and she would have said something. But again, like I said: Don't post naked photo's of yourself on the internet. Unless your a porn star, then you've gotta be legal to do it. It violates Myspace's Terms and Conditions, and it's CP. I mean, Jesus, grow a brain and use some common sense.

They don't get away with it, they get caught. It just doesn't get the media attention like this.

How exactly are naked pictures pornographic? They're not exactly viewed in a bright light, but unless she was misusing a vegetable or other such perversity, I don't see how a naked picture constitutes pornography.

I think somebody needs to talk with her parents, and have them talk to her.
That really seems to be the more rational course of action. Getting her arrested just seems a tad excessive, to say the least.

What? I can kind of understand where they're coming from... but she's a minor. I suppose the police simply want to oppress this sort of idea all together, lest it become a new way for pedophiles to distribute their filth.
Police don't make laws, nor do they decide exactly what the letter of a law means. They respond to reports and act as policy dictates; least in the states.

This sort of thing actually happened while I was in high school; a kid was taking naked pictures of himself and selling them on websites. It was a pretty big deal (especially since this was 1996). Although he did drive a newish Camaro...

Either way he was branded a weirdo for the remaining two years of high school.

Personally this is a stupid reaction to a stupid action. The girl is 14. I mean I know a guy who took a picture of his own dick while drunk and e-mailed it to every girl on his MSN list, but does that make him a sex offender? Heck no! You can also bet your ass that some of those girls he sent it to were underage.

Funnily enough his mother found out and it turned into a joke eventually but fuck sakes people. This is a hormone driven teenager we're talking about here. I'm not at all surprised that 14 year olds are taking nude pictures of themselves and uploading them to a web site this stuff has been happening for years. It has been said in this thread before that this is a parental matter.

The girl fucked up, but labeling her as a sex offender is just ludicrous. The law is meant to protect the people. Plain and simple. In this case no one wins, and no one is being protected. This is like... just so stupid I can't believe it really.

The law should prosecute everybody equally. "Equality under the law"

The idea that you can become a sex offender by exploiting yourself is patently ridiculous.

Well... I can appreciate the attempt to nip the problem in the bud, but they're going about it all wrong.

I don't think we're gonna be staving off paedophiles if we're going to be putting signs in the yards of children that put nude pictures on the internet. In fact, that just makes them one big paedo-target.

This like trying to convict someone who commits suicide of murder. Seriously think about that. This pursuit of justice protects no one. All it does is cause harm.

"Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship or limitation in public. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes used to denote not only freedom of verbal speech but any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are closely related to, yet distinct from, the concept of freedom of thought. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on hate speech."

It seems to me that she was only expressing herself in way that only harms herself. This seems like a violation of her 1st amendment rights. But I could be wrong, I'm not a lawyer.
