Bioware GM Says Mass Effect: Andromeda is "Totally Softcore Space Porn"

The ESRB rating for Mass Effect: Andromeda now says it has "full nudity," and Bioware's GM is calling the game "softcore space porn."

We've learned a lot more about Mass Effect: Andromeda this month, including the game's meaningful side quests [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/169640-Mass-Effect-Andromeda-PC-Specs]. But here's one you've probably never heard: According to Bioware GM Aaryn Flynn, Andromeda is basically "softcore space porn."

[tweet t=https://twitter.com/AarynFlynn/status/835722814376259584]

This comes via the above tweet, which is part of a discussion that was sparked by Flynn mentioning that the game's ESRB description was changed from "partial nudity" to "full nudity." The ESRB rating isn't final yet, but the game has a provisional "M" for blood, strong language, nudity, strong sexual content and violence, according to its GameStop page [http://www.gamestop.com/ps4/games/mass-effect-andromeda/136497].

Of course, your first thought would be that Flynn is just trolling us, but in a subsequent tweet, he dismisses that possibility. When asked if he was trolling, he replied,

All of this is interesting to those who have followed the series for a while, because of the controversy that surrounded the first Mass Effect, which was apologized for her comments [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/80900-].

We're not all that far from finding out just how racy the newest Mass Effect will be. Mass Effect: Andromeda is scheduled to hit PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 21.

Well...

Now I know that I'll roleplay Ryder as an asexual. Assuming of course that I have another brain fart and I forget that I'll sooner eat my own teeth (I'll find a way) than buy another EA game.

Sooooo... space wang? Or just the friendly neighborhood nips and butt shots?

Also, nice that Bioware finally admits what we already knew for years.

The problem is this sorta seems like they've given up on story being the key selling point.

I don't know man, sex has been a major selling point since the first Mass Effect. And Mass Effect 2 had one woman run around in a catsuit, one with the mother of all cleavage, and one with nipple straps. It's been pretty high on their check list since the start of the 7th generation.

I think now they're just less skittish in flaunting it. Maybe because sex in games has become less of an explossive subject in mainstream media.

Not exactly selling it to me. But am sure it's selling to a certain demographic nonetheless.

Anyway, softcore is pretty broad, isn't it? Surely underwear modelling, side-boob and protruding nipple-tent falls under softcore? I'm not versed in these technicalities though.

DA:I upped the ante by showing some nips, so I wouldn't be surprised if ME:A pushes further for showing Ryder's Commander Shepard standing at attention. I doubt they'll show penetration, but yeah, they've probably cued up the "shhhiggidiggidiggidiggah" sound effect. :^)

I think that might be pushing it. The most a movie/tv show/game is willing to show is some floppy junk. Full-on tent pole is something not even Game of Thrones has the balls for.

The only good thing about BioWare shutting down their forum is no more romance threads.

All is forgiven!

Considering how cringeworthy some of the writing in Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age Inquisition was, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was a 100% serious statement.

A producer recently talked about prioritising character over story - which is why I loved ME2 so much, and why I could still greatly enjoy the variously shitty DA:I (characters and character narrative).

Relationship systems (platonic and otherwise) are a part of that, so for me this is just a company understanding its strengths (which have arguably defined the entire company since KotOR. Jade Empire, after all, included straight and gay romance options, as coy as they all were). DA:I may've been an idiotic and mind numbing game to play at times, but its handling of relationships of various kinds was a major improvement of what had come before. If ME:A can match how DA:I handled things - or improve them - then I fail to see the downsides.

The question is, what demographic?

There's a very small crossover between the people who'd want porn and don't mind the unappealing character designs.

This... this right here, is why I have gone from a ME fan to someone who has NO INTEREST in the new game. Every damn bit of info that flops onto the table makes the most recent chapter look god awful.

It's going to have to get decent reviews from people I trust for me to consider buying it.

I want maturity in my games, and yes sex DOES play a part in that... but the article report seems to show a general "hurh, hurh boob!" and "snick snick Willy!" attitude that I only expected from pre-pubescent teenagers...

fuck me... (sighs)

Yeah, okay. Someone doesn't get ironic banter when they see it.

This is why I could never be a spokesperson for anything, I would have to constrain my natural urge to sass everyone.

Uh oh. :/ Usually, games that attempt to use sex appeal as a marketing strategy end up being trash. This statement is either and attempt to invite controversy as a publicity stunt, and/or a desperate appeal to teen boys to ignore the faults because boobs.

Using sex to sell their game? Reminds me of Randy making a subreddit for Battleborn porn and tweeting about it.

Ehhh, I'm not against a little T & A & D in a game, it's just... I don't really want to see a full on sex scene in Andromeda because of the weird claymation/mashed potato look everyone has (well at least all the humans, but alien nudity doesn't count). There's only so far into the uncanny valley I'm willing to go before it stops being erotic and starts being disturbing.
