Sony Cuts Price of PS2

Looks like the rumors from yesterday [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90559-UPDATE-Sony-to-Make-Announcement-Tomorrow] that Sony would be announcing a price cut for the PlayStation 3 were halfway true: Price cut yes, PS3 no.

Time sure flies in the videogame industry - okay, maybe it doesn't, but it sure feels like it sometimes. Street Fighter is two decades old, it's been thirteen years since Super Mario 64 defined 3D platforming, and it's been ten years since Sony announced development of the successor to the Playstation.

We all know the story. Despite a shaky launch, the PS2 took the world by storm, crushing Sega's Dreamcast and becoming the most popular game console of all time with a whopping 140 million (approximately) units sold. Even now, in the console's waning years, with its high-powered big brother the new darling of the family, the PS2 is still trucking along with titles like Persona 4 still being released.

In the event that you're one of the fourteen people left on Earth who has never owned a PS2, you can now acquire one for cheap - $30 cheaper, in fact. Sony announced today that it would be cutting the price of the PS2 from $129 USD to $99 USD: That's right, you can now get a PS2 for under $100! ...well, before taxes, anyway.

Sure, it's not a PS3 price cut, but it's still, uh, something? It's the thought that counts, right?

Damnit, I just lost a bet. I figured they were going to announce the return of the PS3 model that can play old PS2 games. I was close though...

I got a non-slimline PS2 back in the day with a free game (GTA III) for £140 I believe. So now that it is ~£70 bog standard this seems a bit lacklustre. Oh well...

PS2 is still making big money for sony not because of the games because so many people still
want something they can just play on with out this HD or linking up.

i miss the dreamcast though...=[

Ok Sony it is time to put down the rock and step away from the pipe. You are in the next gen ring and getting your ass handed to you and you announce you have lowered the price of your last gen console? Don't get me wrong I love the PS2 it was the best console I have ever owned but come on support your new child. The PS3 is not your red haired stepchild is it? It is the natural evolution to lower the price to under 100 bucks but to announce it like it is a huge deal? C'mon Sony what happened?

Indeed, it seems to be a steady cash cow for Sony in these bad times. Plus not everyone has HD TV, its true.

Never played the Dreamcast though ;)

As if it's being ten years since it was first announced, I got the ps1 ten years ago.

I've seen cheap second hand PS2's and a game or so for about £50.

If Sony had dropped the price of the PS3 to below £200, I would've wanted one for my birthday... But nahhh that won't happen until like 2015 or something.

The PS2 is still popular because it had actual VARIETY, something that is sorely missing from all current gen consoles (but not the DS). No matter what niche you were in you could find a game for you on the PS2. Good luck with that on any current gen system, either you like xPSes or minigames or you're screwed.

The PS2 has been 99€ here for a while though I think. Not sure it's even worth buying anymore, not going to be easy to find many games for the thing anymore.

You don't need an HDTV for PS3--yeah, it makes the PS3 looks nicer, but it's not mandatory. Sony should've put that $30 price drop somewhere useful, say, in their current competitive market rather than their outdated model?

This is like saying we're discounting the Model T--it doesn't work as well, but at least you still get a car for those who missed out a hundred years ago.

Or bring back the PS3 with backwards compatibility and reduce that by $30--isn't this doing the exact same thing?
