I know that doesn't make a lot of sense, but in the mind of a lot of gamers, the death knell has already sounded for the PS2 (and some of them still support it, don't get me wrong, so let me clarify that it's a lot but not all). Sony even announced they pulled support for the system a while ago. Obviously there are a lot of PS2-supporters, so why not have their cake and eat it too? If they had the reverse compatibility on the PS3, they could try and bring in more of their former audience.

I bought a PS2 right when it came out and loved it; the only reason why I didn't buy a PS3 back when it still had reverse compatibility was because I had just bought an Xbox 360, which had really promising looking games on it at the time. When the PS3 came around, I wanted it, but was out of money. Now they took away one of the features I wanted so much, and the only way to get a reverse compatible PS3 is on Ebay used.

I stand by my statement
I totally agree with you that they should never have pulled ps2 backwards compatibility I think it was a big oversight on their end. The thing is they did it to appease all the people complaining about prices which was a bad move on their part but when millions are screaming that it is too expensive something has to give somewhere and they pulled pretty much the one thing that they could to cheapen up manufacturing costs so they could drop the price of the system. They tried running emulation on the systems after that but it just did not work as well as it did in the first runs with an actual chip. They have also done die changes and such trying to lower costs why exactly they decided to completely remove the ps2 emulation I have no idea for certain I would guess it has something to do with the die changes, the fact that emulation did not work as well, or to cut out another price point of so they could drop it another 100 dollars.

So I can definitely see your point on that it sucks that they pulled ps2 emulation but the question is are you willing to pay the extra money to have the ps2 emulation.

I really wonder if the people that scream about the price would really buy a ps3 if they did drop the price another 100 dollars? Or if they would still complain about the price or something new.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3 has a really good layout of die changes/price changes/breakout of what sku's had what.

/off topic
This is why I love the escapist real conversations/ debates that do not turn into screaming matches or flame wars.

Yep no one buys the ps2 anymore that is why it posted 410,000 sales over christmas season. http://www.digital-digest.com/blog/DVDGuy/2009/01/23/game-consoles-december-2008-npd-sales-figure-analysis/
