PS2 is still making big money for sony not because of the games because so many people still
want something they can just play on with out this HD or linking up.

i miss the dreamcast though...=[
Indeed, it seems to be a steady cash cow for Sony in these bad times. Plus not everyone has HD TV, its true.

Never played the Dreamcast though ;)
more kid friendly and cash friendly on the pockets.

and..=[ thats a shame lol..but then there wasn't many best sellers on it also depends on what you like...
Could have been worse, could have been a *SEGA SATURN* MUAHAAHA

The PS2 has been 99€ here for a while though I think. Not sure it's even worth buying anymore, not going to be easy to find many games for the thing anymore.
I don't know about where you are but around here pretty much every store still has shelves of ps2 games and that is not even including the used games.

You realize you just asked to add a new feature which will cost more money in development and possibly hardware depending on how it was implemented and then also asked for them to drop the price of the console at the same time. How does that make any sense they are already taking a loss so lets double that loss by paying for dev/or hardware and dropping price????

I would gander a guess that them dropping the price of the ps2 is probably sony acknowledging the end of a system and saying come get them while we still make them. I think I will go buy one just for the fact my old launch day one does not like to read discs all the time. I also have a backwards compatible PS3(sometimes it is a good thing to be an early adopter) But the ps2 has always been for the living room especially when friends are over.

I thought this was already known? Or, well, rumored at least. I imagine the idea of an actual gaming console, not a handheld, selling for $99 retail price, might be tempting for anyone who doesn't already have one or wants to get a new one. I bought one used for $50 but wouldn't mind getting a new one since who knows what the lifespan of this thing might be...

this is barely news, so many people already have a ps2/a ps3 with ps2 capabilites/ a ps3 without ps2 but don't care/ or play something else entirely/ use to play ps2 but those days are over now

You don't need an HDTV for PS3--yeah, it makes the PS3 looks nicer, but it's not mandatory. Sony should've put that $30 price drop somewhere useful, say, in their current competitive market rather than their outdated model?

This is like saying we're discounting the Model T--it doesn't work as well, but at least you still get a car for those who missed out a hundred years ago.

Or bring back the PS3 with backwards compatibility and reduce that by $30--isn't this doing the exact same thing?
i like the way you think... i have a new ps3 and it's just plain weird to haul out the old ps2 when i want to play an old game... what's more bizarre is the fact that we can play ps1 games on them

Not a new feature, it's adding one they took out back in.
No development time, no money.

As it has already been said, they ought to cut the price of the PS3 instead and actually make some progress in this generation's sales.

Still needs development to make sure it all works with newest hardware and firmware(not just as easy as plug back in call it good. Parts cost money also changes in the process of manufacturing costs money. Quality assurance testing would also have to be changed to cover the ps2 part of it. They cut it out to save money so they could make the PS3 cheaper. Then you ask them to put it back in and still cut prices further business wise just does not make sense.

Ok Sony it is time to put down the rock and step away from the pipe. You are in the next gen ring and getting your ass handed to you and you announce you have lowered the price of your last gen console? Don't get me wrong I love the PS2 it was the best console I have ever owned but come on support your new child. The PS3 is not your red haired stepchild is it? It is the natural evolution to lower the price to under 100 bucks but to announce it like it is a huge deal? C'mon Sony what happened?
The PS2 is still a productive console for Sony though. Right now they're losing hand over fist or whichever is the larger sum on the PS3. It makes sense to get people attracted to a lower priced console to be able to support the bigger child even more, at least partially.

I know that doesn't make a lot of sense, but in the mind of a lot of gamers, the death knell has already sounded for the PS2 (and some of them still support it, don't get me wrong, so let me clarify that it's a lot but not all). Sony even announced they pulled support for the system a while ago. Obviously there are a lot of PS2-supporters, so why not have their cake and eat it too? If they had the reverse compatibility on the PS3, they could try and bring in more of their former audience.

I bought a PS2 right when it came out and loved it; the only reason why I didn't buy a PS3 back when it still had reverse compatibility was because I had just bought an Xbox 360, which had really promising looking games on it at the time. When the PS3 came around, I wanted it, but was out of money. Now they took away one of the features I wanted so much, and the only way to get a reverse compatible PS3 is on Ebay used.

I stand by my statement
