Man Finds Ecstasy Tabs in Used GTA Game

The father of a 12-year-old boy was "sick" to discover four tablets of what he believed to be ecstasy in the manual of a pre-owned copy of Grand Theft Auto 4 [http://www.rockstargames.com/iv].

Richard Thornhill of the U.K. said the plastic-wrapped pills were inside the game's manual and fell out when he opened the package. He made the discovery after he and his brother each purchased a pre-owned copy of Grand Theft Auto 4 from his local Gamestation [http://www.gamestation.co.uk/] in Cheltenham.

"I was going to put it away and a felt a lump on the front cover. Inside the instruction booklet was a ball of shrink-wrap, or clingfilm," he told the Metro. "I thought it was just a ball of clingfilm, but then I realized there were tablets inside. I instantly felt sick. They had Mitsubishi signs on them, which I recalled meant they were ecstasy pills. I wasn't 100% sure though, so I checked online and sure enough I was right - it was ecstasy."

When he contacted Gamestation, store personnel initially denied responsibility and told him to just destroy the pills. Eventually Thornhill called police instead, who took the pills but unfortunately destroyed them without testing them. "It was more than likely they were ecstasy pills," a police spokeswoman said.

Gamestation has apologized to Thornhill and issued a statement saying, "We have rigorous procedures for accepting pre-owned titles and checking them before they are put back on sale. We have launched an immediate investigation and we will work closely with police to find out what happened in this instance."

Thornhill has nonetheless called for stricter policies regarding used game sales. "What made me feel the most distraught was the fact we let our 12-year-old son play the game. Worst case scenario is he could have swallowed those pills," he said. "He plays racing games as well, which have Mitsubishi cars in them, so he could have just thought they were something fun - like sweets."

Why was he giving his 12 year old son an 18 rated game? Although Gamestation where rather stupid not to check what was in the box. Good grief.

Well I guess I'll be the first to ask why his twelve year old son was playing GTA4 in the first place?
Edit: Or I guess I'm the second, tarnations.

How long did his son have the game before he found the pills? I know he's only 12 but it's possible they were his.

Also he's 12, the guy's an idiot. Don't let him play GTA games and then complain you've found drugs in his room. I'm not saying the GTAIV makes people drug addicts but he's certainly accelerating his formative years.

This is non-news. Could have happened with any game. End result is that Gamestation will, hopefully, start checking the preowned games they take in a little more carefully before putting them back on the shop floor. Or at least I hope they do, the last time I bought a preowned game off them the techtree poster was in French!

I assume it was before he even gave it to his son... although who knows?

The father said he let his son play.
"What made me feel the most distraught was the fact we let our 12-year-old son play the game. Worst case scenario is he could have swallowed those pills," he said.
It's sad that he assumes his son is mature enough to play an adult rated game but in his mind he has the intelligence of a baby/toddler with a oral fixation having to put everything in it's mouth.

It's doesn't say how long they'd had the game. I'd like to have all the story, I'm supposing - it's possible they weren't in the game when bought.

"Rigorous procedures"?! Yeah, right! I bet they didn't even crack the box open after it was traded in, the lazy bums. Sad that the standard is so low.

Drugs in a GTA case? I'm willing to bet money (not much, but some) that the dad put them there for publicity, I mean seriously, who'd leave their drugs in a sodding game?

Well, let me put it this way. It was more likely to turn up in that than Sonic And The Black Knight.

Well, if you were high on E, you might think it would be funny to put the tabs into your game and trade it in. It's all about the lulz. But really, he's letting his 12 year old kids play a game where you trade drugs, kill copious amounts of people, and have sex, he doesn't seem like the most responsible parent in the world. And as has been said, he probably put them in their himself, considering he knew the M symbol was common on ecstasy. If he took the prerogative to research drugs to that extent, it can be reasonable to assume that he would research the fact that GTA IV might not be suitable for 12 year olds. I let my little brother play doom and goldeneye when he was 9, because they are cartoonish violence. I still wouldn't let him play soldier of fortune or GTA even when he was 13, the overall theme of the game is a bit much. The real world violence, the sex, the drugs, it's a bit different than doom where you're shooting demons. Personal responsibility fails.
