Resident Evil 5 DLC Stirs More Controversy

Did Capcom rip off gamers for Resident Evil 5's Versus Mode DLC? Here are both sides of the story.

There was considerable uproar when Capcom first announced the Versus Mode DLC for Resident Evil 5. Criticisms were pretty much predictable and arguably justified: this content should be part of the original package, gamers cried out. Well, at least it's better than Horse Armor, right?

Maybe not. According to IGN [http://ps3.ign.com/articles/970/970429p1.html], Capcom's trying to pull a fast one on gamers. After doing some digging around, the site discovered that the file size of the DLC is a paltry 1.86 MB. "You are not, in fact, downloading the content from Xbox Live Marketplace or PlayStation Network," they wrote. "Instead, you are downloading a key that unlocks content already on the RE5 retail disc. The same disc you paid $60 for a month ago."

Confronting Capcom with a justification for asking gamers to pay for content already on the disc, they got the same response the company gave when this whole business started up in the first place: the DLC represents something "outside the scope" of Resident Evil 5's original vision and actually cost money and resources to make.

Capcom's Christian Svensson, writing on the Capcom Unity forums (and using a smug looking pic of himself for an avatar, I might add), cleared things up, however. The keys sold as DLC that just unlock content already on the disc, he explained, are usually 100K or less in size. Versus Mode is clearly more than that.

"It is not a key," Svensson said. "We have said in the past, it uses assets from the disc (like levels, models, audio, etc.) but the code is new and does not exist on the disc."

Sounds like that's as straight as the story's going to get. But regardless of whether or not you're paying for content on the disc, the question of its worth also comes down to its quality. So, anyone who took the plunge on this DLC, is it any fun?

Shoddy journalism from IGN and Capcom being evasive/weird. Just another day, nothing to see here. :p

It probably exists in part on the disc and requires stitching together, regardless, trying to raise controversy over content existing on the disc already is old hat. People don't have to like it, but who says they have the right to the content anyway? It's all in the use license, completely aboveboard.

I really find it hard to believe they couldn't just have included it on the disk or atleast offer it for free. Hell, Valve is releasing a new multiplayer mode for L4D this month for FREE!!! Com on Capcom don't turn in to EA, ones bad enough.

I quite like the DLC yeah. For 400 points, it feels just right and fits in nicely as an extension to the mercenaries mode. It doesn't bother me too much that part of it was on the disc in the first place because as someone rightly said to me, we didn't know it was on the disc when we bought it did we?

Therefore when we paid $60 (£40) for it we weren't buying it for that, we were buying it for the game. Hence, in my honest opinion I don't feel ripped off. The achievements are a bit of a pain though what with taking quite a while to get but I feel that again extends the experience.

So, what you basicly are saying is when i did not tell you that you already have something, than it is rigth to let you pay for it again even if you already own it?

It is a big deal because this is not a pleasant road to be on. What happens when it's other special features content that we are being charged for? The mercenary modes, the bonus games, the bonus content? What happens when "multiplayer is out of the original scope of the game's vision and so cost time and resources to make" thus "justifying" people buying it?

Honestly, I don't care if they put the content on the disc initially or not. Really, who cares about an assortment of 1's and 0's? Games often times have a load of data that is not used. They released a game, and you bought it, and you can play exactly what they told you about. Then, they offer you the chance to expand your content for a small fee, exactly like any other DLC. At the end of the day, the only, ONLY, functional difference between including the DLC on the disc and later unlocking it and other DLC is that they were nice enough to free up some of your hard drive space. Even if the content was already on the disc waiting to be paid for, what are you really complaining about except irony?

When it comes to DLC, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that this is all just a big misunderstanding about how the game development leaves all kinds of stuff on the cutting room floor at first when compared to the developer's original vision for the game. Sorta like watching different cuts of a movie or the blooper reel or the behind the scenes documentary of the movie or whatever - sorta, because don't get me wrong, I don't think games should be like the experience of watching a movie, gaming should have interaction that has impact for personal stories.

What I am trying to say is, there are ways to develop games that have all kinds of stuff happening at the same time, some make into in the final game and others don't, so in a way, don't you think it would be a good thing if some of those features that had to be ignored for the real world constraints of game development got a second chance to have the attention they need?

The fact that Capcom has utter contempt for their audience?
Why? Literally, the only functional difference between other DLC and unlocking something on the disc is that you have more free hard drive space.

While I may not agree with what Capcom is doing right here, they are far from having "utter contempt for their audience" compared to most companies *coughcoughEAcoughActivisioncoughcough*

400 points might not seem like alot but it is to me. I personally feel that they should have given the key or whatever you need to download for free buying the game alone is dear enough.

Why is the thing on the disk when I can't use it without buying a fucking key online?
