Japanese Slim PS3 Commercials Are Really Weird

Sony is no stranger to bizarre TV advertising, but these brand-new Japanese TV spots promoting the Slim PS3 are a special kind of unsettling and strange.

There must be something in the water at Sony's marketing department. That's the only way to explain how this sort of thing keeps getting approved. On the one hand, there's embarrassing marketing, like PSP for Girlz [http://www.youtube.com/watch?p=8612602EA7A83404].

This sort of advertising, though? This is on the other hand. The hand that brought us David Lynch's utterly bizarre "The Third Place" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4tOvkvCvwQ] PS2 commercials. No, this commercial doesn't make us feel embarrassed on Sony's behalf as much as it does make us feel ... well, puzzled. And maybe more than a little bit disturbed.

Is that what you actually look like when you play the PS3? I certainly hope not.

I have to admit, those are actually pretty cool. Each one is only 15 seconds, and has a lot motion and excitement suggested throughout. I'm not sure what it's getting at, but I still like it.

Why do I feel like I should enter a court room with a PS3 on the stand and ask it "Ok PS3, where did the people touch you on the doll"? I mean these aren't creepy so much as well...disturbing.

To be honest I've never liked the ads for the PS3 or the PSP. They were always trying to be so hip and cool, and the ad usually would just fall on its face.

I think the ad is completely sensible. It's showing all the emotion that the games evoke via game faces, with some comical sound effects.

And I thought the PSP squirrels were freakin' funny.
