Chinese Gamers Blockade MMO

A remake of Hot-Blooded Legend, considered a classic videogame in China, was blockaded by disgruntled fans on its launch.

The Legend Returns is a remake of the classic Chinese videogame Hot-Blooded Legend, a classic Chinese MMO. The remake was billed as a having the 'flavor' of the original, but fans quickly discovered that that was not the case and microtransations seeemd to be the order of business.

Feeling slighted by what they described as publisher Shanda's 'false advertising', they organized an in-game protest and as the game went live at 2pm on August 28th, thousands of players blockaded the entrances to the game's various cities, preventing other players from entering.

The game admins quickly retaliated and transported charcters either to patches of wilderness far from the cities, or into what is called the 'Black Room'.

A Chinese blogger summed up the feelings of the protestors in a blog post: "...things are different in . There are commercial stores in which you can buy anything that you want as long as you have RMB (the real currency of China). As long as you spend money, you can get promoted even if you don't fight the monsters and you can live a life of leisure."

"It is no wonder that the netizens are protesting: In a virtual world in which real-world money means everything and actual ability counts for nothing, what embodies the values of life?"

Wow. Chinese people finally get an MMO they're allowed to play [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94392-China-Cracks-Down-on-Online-Games] and it sucks. Typical, isn't it?

Microtransaction based RPGs do seem to be getting progressively worse as time goes on.

That wouldnt work in runescape. You can just walk through people. "I dont care If you're protesting,I've gotta smelt some iron!"

See, we should do that in these big MMOs that pull this $15 a month stuff on us. I'm pretty sure the "it upholds servers" argument became useless when Guild Wars became popular.

Aren't "micro-transactions" just the norm in most MMO's nowadays? Even free ones allow the option...

My thoughts exactly...wouldn't it have been better to just not play the game at all?

Yeah....guild wars isnt exactly that big, and doesnt have the same amount of updates or content as a proper mmo, the servers dont need holding up. Yes proper mmo, as in one that isnt completely instanced and where the world is seamless and everyone exists at the same time, GW is pretty much just a "people join server to play with a group or you can play solo" game. The town being the lobby and the outside world being the segregated servers, it pretty much is an mmo in the same sense Diablo 2 is an mmo, just you can run around in the lobby instead of being in a chatroom.

Besides if you'd like to tell me a way of making wow free to play without the servers melting and the same amount of content being provided be my guest.
