See, we should do that in these big MMOs that pull this $15 a month stuff on us. I'm pretty sure the "it upholds servers" argument became useless when Guild Wars became popular.
Yeah....guild wars isnt exactly that big, and doesnt have the same amount of updates or content as a proper mmo, the servers dont need holding up. Yes proper mmo, as in one that isnt completely instanced and where the world is seamless and everyone exists at the same time, GW is pretty much just a "people join server to play with a group or you can play solo" game. The town being the lobby and the outside world being the segregated servers, it pretty much is an mmo in the same sense Diablo 2 is an mmo, just you can run around in the lobby instead of being in a chatroom.
But if they just lowered the price to $5 a month they could still update a lot. Guild Wars does update, and it's not that small. And what's wrong with a completely instanced game? I hate kill stealers/player killers in 2Moons. Having outposts as the only things shared with other people is the only part I don't mind.

Because it defeats the point of it being a big world full of people if they're all stuck in little segregated cages. I'm not saying GW is a bad game, I personally dont enjoy it because I find the combat to be a little icky, but it's a good game, I just think it could be alot better if it was all one world and not instanced. Besides, $15 is a negligible amount really. I know GW does update, but it's still not as big or as much as fully fledged mmos.

Feh, I guess it depends on the player. I prefer instances without other people because it cuts down on player killing and kill stealing. I wouldn't mind it that much, but non instanced gameplay causes $15 a month for server upkeep, which in turn keeps me from playing a lot of MMOs. I'm pretty sure mot of that money isn't going towards upgrades and downloads, just upkeep.

I kind of want to make some terrible (and probably slightly offensive) joke about China's history of protests, but I will not. Instead: a poem I will comment on how impressed I am, that a games community would all gather together in protest. I doubt many other games could pull that sort of thing of.

Not the first time something like this has happened. In Star Wars Galaxies, player protested a major update by forming picket lines around starting areas to protest, encouraging newcomers to quit.

And I've heard people call the Chinese weak-willed...
This is also why I think subsctiption-based MMOs is overall a kinder model.

Well what else would you suggest to pass the time? Create your own web cartoon series?

I wouldn't mind a way of doing it where you can buy lavish things, but a huge mansion, whatever in a game by using real money. The only exception would be leveling, you shouldn't be able to buy that, but think about it, you could be a King or something, live a life of luxury, but you'd pay for it by being very weak if you're not also leveling up. So, somebody could easily kill and loot you. I dunno.

"It is no wonder that the netizens are protesting: In a virtual world in which real-world money means everything and actual ability counts for nothing, what embodies the values of life?"
It's an MMO... Actual ability doesn't count for anything anyways...

That said, the story confuses me a bit...Can't they just, not play it...? Or have they paid for it already or what?

Kinder model? That would explain why those damn kids get $100 a month from their parents and can pay... Or why in EVERY poll on be it Guild Wars, Aion or any other MMO the average age of a MMORPGer is 20-25.

Wait, what?
With most Subscription MMOs, you shell out the price one typical game, and then 10-15 US dollars a month for unlimited gameplay. To be a competent player in most FTP with premium games, you wind up paying at least $8, anyway.
Another thing is, people tend to excuse the typical lower quality of F2P games in the idea that its OK because you pay less. What you wind up with is a lesser product where people can have an unfair advantage based on their real-life monetary standings.
Don't get me wrong; I do like some F2P MMOs, its just that charm doesn't make up for undeniable attributes quality MMOs have, and are more often found in P2P games.

Oh, wait - I misunderstood your post.

Kinder as in "nicer/better". I understood "kinder" as in "childish" from German xD

My bad, you're right - subscriptions are better.
