PS3 Sales Soar With Release of the Slim

The redesigned PS3 has proved a massive hit with consumers around the world, with enormous increases in sales in Japan and the UK.

Sony might just be on track to steal second place from under Microsoft's nose now that the PS3 Slim has hit the market. Sony sold over 150,000 units in just three days Japan, an increase of nearly 1500% from last week. These numbers actually beat the original PS3 launch, where only around 90,000 units were sold due to problems with supply.

It's a similar story in the UK, where PS3 sales are up nearly 1000% and the PS3 tops the charts in sales for the first time since January 2008. Software sales have also increased by 17%, putting the PS3 in third place behind the Xbox 360 and Wii.

Andrew House, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, gave this statement: "I think what I've heard anecdotally is that this is the point people were waiting for - a redesigned model and, in Euros, a significant price reduction. That's people's cue to jump into the business."

The sales jumped so high from week to week due to people not buying PS3s the week before, waiting until the Slim came out. It doesn't negate the fact that a crapton of PS3s were sold though.

How so? I don't think this is really anywhere close to being "to late too the game".

As for the sales, congrats to Sony. Its about time sales picked up. Of course, this was mostly in Japan and I'll never play with these people, but its still great to hear nonetheless.

Yay Japan, I suppose! We should remember, though, that sales in the UK would be up 1000% if it went from 5 units to 50 units. So that number really tells us nothing.

The PS2. I only see this as a temporary spike in sales though, I'm not sure if it will last. We shall see after Christmas and we're into Q2. Plus the PS3 is going to be at least 2nd by the end of this generation, I think that's a given.

Indeed. Some of the sales would be towards people trading in phats for slims, but they are not in the majority, the CoD 4 sales prove that.

Not me, when I eventually get one it'll be the phat, I like my stuff glossy, and it'll go with my glossy black Wii. Plus it'll be cheaper because I'll probably end up buying it used.

I really want them to come out on top of this generation, they've had so much shit flung at them (some if it has been deserved admittedly) that it's hard not to want them to surpass everyones low expectations.

Plus, I really dont want Sony to stop releasing consoles or games because they are always my first choice when it comes to what I spend my wages on.

How are they "far too late" to "win"? We're barely, what, 4 years into this generation? A lot can happen in one year. And frankly, who cares anymore if they "win", as long as they turn in a profit and are successful then everything should be fine. Not everything has to be "NUMBAH 1!@" to be a success.

I wander how long this will last though, this could just be something temporary. Or it might not, i don't know.

Well, price cuts usually give a temporary increase in sales anyway, though with the PS3 I'd imagine many many people were holding up for a bigger price drop, so I'd guess that the sales increase will last a little longer than most other price cuts.

Good for them. I intend to get this when Assassin's Creed 2 comes out for the PS3. There's supposed to be a bundle for it if I'm not mistaken.

I don't think the DS factors into the sales figures, as that thing has already sold over a hundred million. If we were counting it, DS would be 1st this generation.

Hey, the PS2's a damn fine console It depends on which months your looking at, the PS3 has sold more than the PS2 at times, but overall hell no it hasn't outsold the Ps2
