Sales increases following a price cut usually only last a few weeks apparently. The new design may help it appear a more attractive purchase in the long term though, so we'll have to wait to see how successful Sony's strategy is.

Yay Sony, as the most tech-geeky of the 3 I'm kinda subconsciously rooting for them. And I did think people would take to the slim because lets face it, most of us who game either a) live with parents or b) live in a pokey little place. Who wants giganto-PS3 taking up so much space... seriously, its like a second TV and really awkward to put things on top of it..

This is a step down the right alley, and they just need to increase the amount of games for it that aren't graphics inclined with little other substance to them... I don't want it to be a clone of the Ps2 but really they gotta get there before they start moving on up.

I was thinking maybe they might include the handhelds. How sad would it be if you are right and it just outsold the PS2. 3 years after launch it finally outsells the last gen console.
Hey, the PS2's a damn fine console :D It depends on which months your looking at, the PS3 has sold more than the PS2 at times, but overall hell no it hasn't outsold the Ps2
You don't need to sell me on the PS2. I loved that little black box. And there is no way that any of the next gen consoles will be competing with it's sales (well the Wii might be a contender).

Not suprising.

However, they're far to late too the game to win the console war. And this comes from a non-fanboy of anything and someone who is actually going to buy a Slim himself.
Well if sony's 10 year plan goes ahead, the PS3 could feasibly sell more than the wii and 360, if they stick to the typical 5 year cycle. I dunno though; it's certainly sold enough to not be a complete failure (having surpassed the sales figures of the original xbox and gamecube) but due to the ps3's high-end nature coupled with the current financial climate, i do agree that its pretty impossible for them to win purely on sales.

They probably wouldn't have got as much as half as they did if they sold it in the UK for a fair price.

I'm waiting at...Couple of years for them to decrease the price here.

It seems to be Sony's style to release a console and then re-release it, only slimmer. Or, in the PSP's case, not so crap.

Wait.. that just put the PS3 in third place? What was in 3rd place before?

And they'd better get to selling anyway, the PS3 itself has not really MADE money for Sony, the PS2's been carrying the PS3's fat dead weight.
I think that's your answer right there.

I'd guess the PS3 just beat the PS2.

Interesting, that's possible, but it would have to be for this quarter. The ps2's sold wayyy to many consoles over it's lifetime.

Andrew House, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, gave this statement: "I think what I've heard anecdotally is that this is the point people were waiting for - a redesigned model and, in Euros, a significant price reduction. That's people's cue to jump into the business."
"A slim model would sell well?"..."A price reduction would be favorable for consumers?"...Its times like these I can't help but wonder why these men wield such power in the video game industry...

I wander how long this will last though, this could just be something temporary. Or it might not, i don't know.
HAHAHA...you know it was probably just a peak for one day of sales out of the whole week...but still....could you imagine if PS3's sold at 1500% for the rest of the year? They could buy the industry...

Not me, when I eventually get one it'll be the phat, I like my stuff glossy, and it'll go with my glossy black Wii. Plus it'll be cheaper because I'll probably end up buying it used.
The day they release God of War 3 and bundle it with the PS3 is probably the day I buy it...

I said I'd buy it when heavy Rain comes out...but with the games coming out on the other two platforms I own that I want, It's going to have to be after Heavy Rain comes out, probably Q3 2010 and beyond.

And here's something to think about. I believe I saw someone work out that in order for the PS3 to pass the Wii, the Wii would have to come to a dead stop, and the PS3 would have to sell the way it is now for a year and a half. I'll search and see if I can find it.

Thank god. Competition is healthy, and it's nice to see a solid 3 contenders in the market. I think that more would be annoying and confusing, and 2 would lead to too much stagnation. As it is, they now have enough consoles that they need to compete with each other, but few enough that they can all shine in there own area. No matter your console of choice this is a good thing for all gamers.

This doesn't really mean anything, people always rush to buy the new version. People bought the DSi for no apparent reason in their millions, without any games to go with the damn thing.

If it stays ahead, or at least stays competitive, through christmas the news will be a lot better for Sony. With any luck it'll be the start of a long reign of terror for Sony's slightly smaller black box.

Speaking of which, when does GT5 come out? My wallet's quaking in it's boots...

I bet that that's a bit misleading. If I remember correctly, Wii makes a tiny fraction of a profit from selling the Wii, and 360 and PS3 LOSE money when they sell a system. All the profit is in selling the games. In my experience, Wii owners have very few games for the Wii, and there doesn't look to be a change to that trend anytime soon. Meanwhile PS3 is slowly building for itself a respectable library. I think that unless Wii does something serious, PS3 is going to topple Wii.

Oh yea, thats another good one that leaves the mouth watering...

To be serious though, I used the word "probably" since I'm still unsure how Winter 2010 will play out for me. I could drop a lot of cash for the PS3 and 1 or 2 titles...or I could just as easily spend money on games for the systems I already have. Take Two is aiming for 2010 to be their year with 3 or 4 franchise titles being released...Blizzard will come out with games...gah my head hurts...

I think I read on another article that selling games on XBLA meant paying 30% of profits to Microsoft.

I guess 30% is acceptable enough for independent developers to try the 360...some go to the Wii...I haven't heard of any independent developers on the PS3 though...

Does anyone have the percentage numbers for the PS3 and Wii?

PS3 sales up 1500%

PS3 software only up 17%

PS3 makes a significant loss on the sale of every console

How is this good news for Sony? Software returns are already low enough due to the added cost of blu-ray over DVD and the extra time and effort into coding the games for the PS3's hardware. This is not going to help the company.

I wish Sony would put more effort into pleasing their ALREADY EXISTING customers instead of trying to rake more in with a superficial stylish redesign. The PS3 was big, sure, but its a console it's not going anywhere, we want more features, content, online support, connectivity options and software quality.

PS3's new motion controls are a step in the right direction but the technology doesn't even have an official name yet, it looks like it is ages away.

I'd imagine many of these sales are people buying the Fatboy original before the stock goes out and they're stuck with the Slimline.

I bought mine as soon as they announced a unit with BC. Snapped it up.
