Silicon Knights CEO Says Natal Won't Make Great Games

The CEO of Silicon Knights said that he "doesn't see how Natal is going to help me tell a better story or create better content."

Denis Dyack, founder of Canadian developer Silicon Knights, went on record about Microsoft's motion control technology, Natal. Dyack founded Silicon Knights in 1992 and has made games such as Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain on the PS1, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for the GameCube, and Too Human for the Xbox 360. He is currently rumored to working on several unannounced projects.

"I'm always interested to see how new technologies turn out," said Dyack. "I'm a big believer in software over hardware." He went on:

Silicon Knights has always pretty much focused on what can we do as entertainers. I'm sure it's very possible to have success in those areas, but [Natal] is not something that I really look at and go 'yes, we'll definitely do something on that.' I know a lot of people have expressed excitement and that's great to see. We want to create games that are very content driven and tell great stories and I don't see how Natal is going to help me tell a better story or create better content.

Dyack is nothing but controversial, like when he expressed that, if it were up to him, the games press wouldn't be able to see games until they were finished [http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/dennis-dyack-says-nay-to-the-enthusiast-press-again/]. This soundbite snubbing of Microsoft's Natal initiative sounds like more of the same from Dyack.

In my opinion, the use of any particular technology will not automatically make better games, it is how that technology is used. So I agree that any game using Natal or developed for the Wii is not better simply because it uses motion technology, but when a game seamlessly blends that technology into the game experience, it can be very rewarding. A game designer that can figure out how to make this happen with any genre of game will have pushed the industry forward and done something great.

On the other hand, dismissing a technology just because he hasn't figured out how to use it seems silly.

Seriously who are they to comment after Too Human I thought that they had all died of shame
And if not died, should have at least crawled away and curled up into the detal position.

I can appreciate his position, however, its a bit of a narrow minded approach to the matter. Its not even been released retail yet, so, of course imagining things for it might be difficult at the moment. Wait for it to progress a little further before to bury it.

Quite so, although I do agree with him on this point; I don't see how Natal will automatically create great games, especially as I'm willing to bet that 90% of the developers will just shoehorn in the controls without bothering to adapt the game for the control system properly.

Perhaps some one will develop a killer app for the Natal. Dyack is just saying it will not be him. Infact he doesn't even want to try, and that is ok. It is like criticizing a painter for not trying his hand at pottery.

Natal seems to me just another gimmick. It'll never replace the classic controller, because people are starting to realise gaming is not all about authenticity and realism.

Yeah. It won't automatically make good games. They'll be some good games, but they'll end up with a ton of shit like the Wii has.

yeah you know, because a dev is only judged on the last game they make, thats why everyone hates double fine and wants it to burn down, since brutal legends had rts elements that people couldnt figure out, yes, death DEATH to Tim Shaffer, hes neeeeever made a good game (sacrasm off)

Why, what are you talking about? He made Metal Gear Solid! Oh wait, it was the gamecube version...

You know, suddenly I'm starting to think Natal would be the best thing to happen to the world. If it will keep this guy from making games, sure, let's make it mandatory for consoles!

Although if he still tries to make games, I'll be afraid... If he's proud of Too Human, what kind of game will it be if he doesn't like it?

So he has done a good game? I did not know.

EDIT: Oh, did not see blood omen there. Well then, I guess he's ok.

But I still hate the Metal Gear Solid game.

Natal seems to be to be more of a gimmick than anything, much like the EyeToy. Very few games really lend themselves to being fully motion controlled, at least without turning into exercise routines nobody really wants to perform while gaming to relax.

He's right in my view. Just because Natal is cool won't magically make games better.
QFT

And the CEO is right in saying that Natal likely won't help him tell better stories or create better content, but that doesn't mean Natal is useless or bad; it's just his cup of tea. Just like how Natal isn't my cup of tea.

All hail Captain Obvious! Of course Natal won't help in writing better stories or creating better gameplay, or even rendering better graphics.

whenever new tech is released you can expect it to be dodgy to some degree.. lets hope that MS has capitalised on this common expectation and have planned to blow our freakin' minds with the natal by somehow releasing it with minimal or no flaws.

secondly, a brave development team will be needed to make a game that can actually use this technology and create a decent game out of it.. now THAT is a feat i am yet to see o_O
