Sony Sells 3 Million PS3s in UK

Sony's PlayStation 3 has sold over three million units in the UK, marking a massive sales jump in the last few months.

Back in July, the PS3 had sold 2.2 million units in the UK, but in the six months that have followed, Sony has managed to sell a further 800,000 consoles, bringing its total sales up to 3 million.

It seems likely that the release of the PS3 Slim in September - which was accompanied by a price cut - is responsible for a significant portion of the sales, which means that Autumn and the Christmas period saw some pretty significant movement of consoles.

The PS3 still has plenty of ground to make up though, as back in July, the Xbox 360 had sold 3.9 million units, and despite the price cut, the Elite version of the 360 was still slightly cheaper than the PS3 Slim.

According to Sony's own data, the PS3 has now sold 27 million units worldwide, which still puts it behind the 360 and Wii, but Sony have repeatedly stated that it is taking a long-term, ten-year, view with the machine, and with six years left in the plan, these relatively early hurdles may not be all that much of a concern for the company.

Good for them I suppose, though they are not making money off them so they still need to jump more hurdles to make a profit.

Well, that's nice Sony. Keep on trucking.

Oh, and would you kindly release the God of War 3 demo here, for fucks sake?

The sales everywhere would increase if Sony would stop fucking around and provide the dvr services and somekind of ps2 bc be it by psn or more preferably free emulater for games you already own or how about both. I guess since Hulu is going premium now we can forget about that ever coming back to the ps3.

From my personal experience in the UK. A lot of my friends have got PS3s. The reasons they didn't get one earlier was due to the price. The drop to the slim has helped a lot; especially since the slim is a lot better than the old PS3 it replaced.

I wonder how close it is to Xbox and Wii?
In terms of world wide sales, there's quite a gulf. The 360 has sold 39 million worldwide, and the Wii 56 million. But remember that the PS3 came out later than either of them, so a smaller install base is to be expected.

EDIT: I take it back. I had it in my head that the Wii came out at the end of 2005, not 2006. That said, the Wii's sales are unusually high for a console.

I might just be speaking from Nostalgia but I seem to recall Nintendo has a relatively good track record of doing exceptionally well (The Virtua Boy doesn't count! Ok...it does :(...but that's why I said relatively).

I don't really know what to say......

Well done Sony, keep pumping out those quality exclusives, and thank god they're not all shooty-shooty-die fests with no stories but are deep, interesting and original games. Can't wait for Heavy Rain and The Last Guardian.

And the GameCube didn't do so well - kinda annoying for me as I owned one ;)

As for the Wii, well, its doing very well on units sold, though not as well on games sold. Even with Wii Play, I don't think... (I could be wrong).

Oh definitely, there's a reason that Nintendo has outlived most of its rivals, but even so, the Wii sales are unusual.

Yeah, I'm sorry Sony. Maybe you can see the PS3 lasting six more years, but I definitely can't. I doubt I'm going to be even remotley interested in my PS3 in fucking 2016. Just admit it Sony, you lost the sales war. Now focus in making God of War 3 will you? If my PS3 gets any more dust on it I doubt it'll work in two months.

Thats good, never a bad thing when companies are doing well in these difficult economic times. Someone mentioned something about Sony losing money everytime they sell a PS3 and i couldnt help but think if the ENN episode where MS was trying to do just that. ^^

And i dont think a new console is needed unless there is some serious technology coming out that'll actually make this generation do what this one did to the last. Games are so good looking now i'll be good to let Devs get even better aquainted with the machines to make better games and be willing to take more risk on new IP's.

Woopedy Doo. Shame Britain isn't a very large market in comparrison to the states or the whole of Europe. Don't get me wrong, I'm from Britain myself, but we're small potatoes in comparrison to other markets.
