Really picking up... wow. Hopefully this'll mean more interesting exclusives (and non-exclusives) and we'll get some truly gob-smacking (Or in Kratos' case "god-smacking") content!

Sony are just kidding themselves when they think they can make up for the slow start with a 6 year future for the PS3.

Console lifecycles have always been roughly 5 years. Taking in account the "crisis" we had, Sony have 2 years tops, before they will need to release new console.
Nothing depreciates faster than computer hardware. If sony sticks with the PS3 for 6 more years, they will have to compete with an xbox 4 that is both cheaper to produce and much faster than the PS3.
Even Nintendo might catch up if you give them a few years.

I wonder how close it is to Xbox and Wii?
In terms of world wide sales, there's quite a gulf. The 360 has sold 39 million worldwide, and the Wii 56 million. But remember that the PS3 came out later than either of them, so a smaller install base is to be expected.

EDIT: I take it back. I had it in my head that the Wii came out at the end of 2005, not 2006. That said, the Wii's sales are unusually high for a console.
the odd part is the PS3 is still outselling the 360. it's sold more in less time, sure there's still a gap but it's growing smaller all the time.

i can see them surpassing the 360 soon enough. give the games until the next generation, ie when more games have issues fitting on one dvd.
This implies that in the next generation (if it even comes) whatever Microsoft's next console is will still be using DVDs. I doubt it.
actually no it doesn't at all. you're confusing game generations with console generations.

some people call the different sets of games waves but really they are generations. it's best done with games that have sequels on the same console. if you look at the first one, it's usually ok, second one come out a bit later and it's better, the third one comes out and it's amazing.

like take Motorstorm and Motorstorm Pacific Rift for the PS3 or Gears of War and Gears of War 2 for the 360 or the fist 2 God of War games for the PS2. there's a marked difference in the appearance of the games and how well they look.

developers learn new tricks as time goes on, such as reducing the space used and such. however there are certain things they can't magically do, like making more space on a dvd, the 360 has a max space of about 7 gigs since m$ requires 2 gigs. i think it was the new PGR racing game that wanted to add all these cool daylight and weather effects but couldn't due to a lack of space on the dvd, so they made those effects static instead of dynamic.

Still got quite a while to go to become a contender. Hope it gets there however. As a game system is deserves more sales than it gets.
