District 9 isn't out here yet.

And when it is it probably won't have the demo with it. We don't even have the Watchmen director's cut over here.

27 million? Weird...I think I read somewhere on IGN that the PS3 had sold 37 mill units...
I've read 32-ish million, with the 360 at around 37.

Regardless, 27 is an outdated number. That's how much the PS3 had sold at the end of the second quarter of 2009. (Or is that technically the third quarter, if they're going by "fiscal years"?)

Woopedy Doo. Shame Britain isn't a very large market in comparrison to the states or the whole of Europe. Don't get me wrong, I'm from Britain myself, but we're small potatoes in comparrison to other markets.
We're part of Europe in terms of sales. But every now and then they break it down.

Yeah, I'm sorry Sony. Maybe you can see the PS3 lasting six more years, but I definitely can't. I doubt I'm going to be even remotley interested in my PS3 in fucking 2016. Just admit it Sony, you lost the sales war. Now focus in making God of War 3 will you? If my PS3 gets any more dust on it I doubt it'll work in two months.
It will last six more years. But that's not to say that the PS4 won't come out in four years time. After all, the PS3 came out in the middle of the PS2's lifespan didn't it?

Yup, if you consider shitty sports games and PSP ports as a sort of lifespan at all. If anything the PS2 was put on life support when the PS3 came out. The PS2 being so popular, it recieved a shitload of visitors. Right up until its death when the PS3 Slim was released. In other words, no. I considered it dead when I opened my PS3 up and played Resistance.

Quite a few of my friends bought the slim when it came out when they didn't have one. =] Mainly because of the price obviously.

I wonder how close it is to Xbox and Wii?
In terms of world wide sales, there's quite a gulf. The 360 has sold 39 million worldwide, and the Wii 56 million. But remember that the PS3 came out later than either of them, so a smaller install base is to be expected.

EDIT: I take it back. I had it in my head that the Wii came out at the end of 2005, not 2006. That said, the Wii's sales are unusually high for a console.
the odd part is the PS3 is still outselling the 360. it's sold more in less time, sure there's still a gap but it's growing smaller all the time.

i can see them surpassing the 360 soon enough. give the games until the next generation, ie when more games have issues fitting on one dvd.

This implies that in the next generation (if it even comes) whatever Microsoft's next console is will still be using DVDs. I doubt it.

IF it uses blu-ray it will owe money to sony and whoever else was joint-ventured into blu-ray.
So MS has to develop a new medium, and given there trends, I'm betting a memory-stick system + digital distribution model. Course Ps4 could do just that, and be Ps3/Ps2/PS1 BC. ;)
(10GB memory sticks are going to be dirt cheap come 2014, USB flash drives are already cheaper than a game to produce) Course a digital model (like psp go) wouldn't require a very large distribution of physical copies...

And regarding the sales.
360 & Ps3 are selling about the same # of copies per year, if you factor in that the 360 had a 1 year head start.

PS3 had a slow start, there first year, just like 360.
2nd year started picking up.
just like 360.
3rd year it started steam rolling.
The main difference here is that the 360 is like the Ps2, the devs flocked to the Ps2 since the 64 was obsolute, and the cube wasn't out yet. And dreamcast was dead water. No one had even heard of xbox until it hit near the end of there life terms.

The obvious difference though, is that the 360 didn't keep that hold on developers, mostly since developers are rather loyal in the console industry. The only real thing 360 did was bring more PC devs to the console world, and they stuck with 360 cause they use the same programming language, While the old-school console guys, are used to the old-school console programming language, so its not as difficult for them. Unless they switched to 360 between ps2 and ps3. ;)
(Many, many devs stated that PS3 Is easier to program for than the PS2, devs complaining about PS3, are most often than not, PC devs.. Like Valve.)

Me too. I think it was VG chartz although I don't know how credible that is. The 27 was likely before the holidays I guess.

Good. If the system sells in Europe, maybe there will be some more exclusives from that area aimed at this burgeoning audience.

Whoa! When you think the 360 has only sold 0.9 million more in the UK despite being around for about 1.5-2 years longer, that's quite astonishing actually.

Sony, I salute you.
