Article: 5 Reasons The Wii Sucks

A blogger has written a scathing review of the Wii console and why it sucks so hard.

The stated mission of the website 5 wonders [http://www.brighthub.com/] of Nintendo's console. The five reasons supplied for the Wii's suckage are generally what you'd expect (graphics, casualness, low third-party support, friend codes) but the author actually says that the motion controls are part of why he hates the Wii.

"Let's talk about the vaunted "motion controls" for a second, shall we?," author Benjamin Sell said. "When the Wii first debuted, everyone was in awe of the ability to swing a controller and have their on-screen avatar do the same. People decided that it was just like actual tennis, or baseball, or bowling, marveling at the geniuses at Nintendo that had delivered this new revelation from on high like Moses carrying his tablets."

Spend any time with Wii Sports, however, and you begin to notice that the revolutionary controls of the Nintendo Wii are not terribly different from those of any other system, aside from requiring you to flail about like an idiot.

Sell goes on to state that if wanted to get "exercise," he would do so outside and that videogames should be exempt from such activities.

While I may agree with Sell's take on the graphics and the expanse of "shovelware" released for the Wii, I take umbrage with his complaint that the console is hard to connect to the internet.

"You need to connect your Wii to the internet, a daunting task in itself for anyone with less-than-average tech savvy," he said. I don't know about you, but all I had to do was turn on the console and my Wii connected to my wireless network immediately, with no setup required at all. I've never heard anyone complain about connecting their Wii to the web, but maybe I'm relying too much on pure anecdotal evidence. Has anyone else had any trouble with this?

"Casual Gamers are Bad for the Industry"

Someone else at my school also said that Final Fantasy VII was a "casual" game because your sword was bigger then you were, and it represented the downfall of gaming, or something. Which that made no sense at all, kinda like this guy, but anyway...

What is so bad about casual games? If anything, I would say competitive games are hurting the gaming industry. Video games were made as a form of entertainment to have FUN. Ok, so there are casual games that aren't hard at all, but they are still fun, like games are supposed to be. I've never had any fun playing competitive games because everyone ends up yelling at each other and getting stressed out. Or, am I just completely wrong here and games are not supposed to be fun anymore?

*ERROR SOUND* Hold on!

He says he enjoy's the Wii literally in the 3rd paragraph. I thought enjoying something is a good sign.

I don't think this person thought his article through very well.

Joy. Another paranoid. Yes, "Casual Gamers are bad for the industry, because the companies will start ignoring us worthy people!"

...wait a second, did the same guy write <url=http://www.brighthub.com/video-games/wii/articles/62592.aspx>the other article, too?! Wha??

Anyone who knows anything about the Wii, having made it this far, probably saw the title of this section and said to themselves: "what online play?"

My point exactly.
...his point was that Wii gamers are stuck in 1998? I don't think I've ever met a gamer with a Wii who didn't know about the internet connection. It's one of the friggin' automatic options on the main screen.

Does someone ranting about the Wii on the internet really count as news?

Wireless routers can be really annoying. If you have no security then it's pretty much hit "go", but if you have encryption turned on or (heaven forbid) a MAC address filter, then you probably need a Computer Person(tm) to help you out. It took me about 10 minutes to get my wii connected to the internet the first time because I was on a network with those exact security features.

A while back Nintendo started an incentive program in Japan [http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/09/01/nintendo_pushes_internet_use/] where customers could get bonus Wii points and even free access to the virtual console library by helping people get their systems connected to the internet. So at least in Japan they see difficulty of setting up as being a major hurdle, as opposed to a lack of interest in online content or just not having internet access in the first place.

Also: That story was lame. It's writer is also, apparently [http://www.brighthub.com/members/graffin.aspx], lame. Don't you have something not-boring to draw my attention to?

What's this? Someone arguing from two different perspectives? On the INTERNET?

*boom*

Gentlemen, my mind has finally exploded.

EDIT: And no, I didn't have a problem connecting my Wii to a wireless network (at a friend's house). I just have trouble setting up the wireless network at my house...

Also playing Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games gives you wankers cramp for all the wrong reasons.

But that is total bullshit about the wireless stuff, it's piss easy and unnecessary.

I like the wii. To be clear i have an Xbox360 and i play all my games on this. I only play on the wii for the really extreme titles like madworld and no more heroes and metroid prime is great too on the wii. BUT! Most games of nintendo are like i always say : casualized. They are too easy. Mario galacy provided some challenge but still way too easy. Metroid prime is the only game for the wii that provides a little challenge. Super smash bros brawl is the game for playing with friends. But where are the serious games, the games that matters even the nintendo ds has more hardcore titles then the wii. I mis the good old days when mario was difficult and would laugh in your face when you died and let you try the level all over again. I understand nintendo focuses on another crowd, but don't let the people who saved all there money for super mario world behind. you can make games like this but add a difficulty function.

this guy is so full of himself. Holy shit what a egotistical prick. He makes fun of the motion controls and new gamers and then in another blog he talks about thats two reason the Wii rocks. He should become a politician because his flip flopping is amazing.

Connection to the web is easy; connection with friends is hard. Not only are there system codes which lock you to the console you're playing on (and you need to exchange these codes with friends rather then a user name which is much simpler) but on top of that the games themselves have game codes which you need to exchange in order to play that specific game. *sigh* Too complicated and not worth it for the meager online experience most of the Wii games provide. When it comes to online play the Wii can't hold a candle to the superior PS3 or the masterful (apparently though I don't own one) 360.

Actually i did have problems connecting my Wii to the internet. For some reason, it was just incompatible with my verizon wireless router. I now just connect my wii thru my usb wireless stick i bought for my ds to get online.

I got really, really frustrated with my Wii's connection the other day. It just would NOT let me connect to my wireless network. My Internet was working just fine, and I couldn't figure out the problem.

Then I realized I was trying to connect to my network back home, 400 miles away, instead of the one in my dorm. Oops. : /

So, maybe it's complicated if you're kind of retarded.

Connecting to the webs was easy in involves going into a couple separate menu clicking "connect" and boom you're good. This guy must have a poor network or something

What the hell? Some blogger rants about why the Wii sucks and this qualifies as news? Pardon me for questioning the editor's sanity, but who gives a flying fuck why somebody thinks the Wii sucks? Surely this has been debated to death in forums by fanboys by now. Now if a big name developer, or executive at MS or Sony wrote it, that would be news. This has got to be one of the dumbest things I've ever seen on The Escapist. This is not why I come to this site!

I dislike the Nintendo Revolution Wii but you will never hear me rag on it for any reason. It's a revolutionary system that revolutionizes revolutions! Just watch it revolute!

Okay, I'm done being an idiot. Still, for all it's (mostly minor) flaws it's still an incredible machine.

Yes this guy right here had major issues with hooking up the Wii to the net. First off Nintendo in thier infinite wisdom decide to discontinue the cords so now I have to have a wireless connection. So I bought a Nintendo USB hub thingie. 2 days later I was able to use the 4000 points I bought. And I still need to reinstall the hardware every once in a while.

I'm with you on the competitive gaming idea. I've played far too many online matches of Halo, Battlefield 2, L4D2, etc. where people take things way too seriously and get all hissy when someone is just trying to enjoy the game. For example, I've been booted from L4D2 matches because I'm not sprinting all out for the goal and am instead taking a moment to blast zombies on my way to the goal. On the other hand, I've been booted by people who take things even slower than I do in said game, so I guess I can't win.

Competition is overrated. Sure, it's nice to win a match of Halo or something, but if I just had fun dinking around with plasma grenades and am happy, why do some people feel the need to call me a noob, or some other "creative" insult.
