The StarCraft II Beta Has Begun

We have the FAQ, we have the system requirements, and now we have the real deal: One of the most highly-anticipated beta tests of all time is here at last. And hell, it's about time.

We knew this was coming thanks to StarCraft II [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98220-StarCraft-II-Beta-Will-Start-This-Month] beta is live.

I don't think I've ever seen so many people excited over a beta test for a game. Hell, I've never been so excited over a beta test for a game before. But the original StarCraft was a landmark title, and is widely considered one of the best games ever made - so a sequel twelve years in the making is bound to be slightly anticipated.

It doesn't seem like emails have gone out yet to those who have been selected, but that doesn't mean that people haven't been admitted - you just need to check your Battle.net account management page [https://us.battle.net/account/management/] to see if the StarCraft II logo is there, and then download away. (Whee, I'm 5% and counting!)

The full press release is below - I need to go, um, polish my dog. My grandmother is on fire, guys, I need to run.

Yeah, my grandmother. That's the ticket.

[blockquote]Blizzard Entertainment announced today that the closed beta test for its highly anticipated real-time strategy game, StarCraft(R) II: Wings of Liberty(TM), has begun. Thousands of gamers around the world have started to receive invitations from the company to participate in the first phase of the beta test. In addition to providing feedback on the multiplayer balance of StarCraft II, testers are also getting a first look at Blizzard Entertainment's revamped Battle.net(R) service, which will be the online platform for StarCraft II, World of Warcraft(R), and future Blizzard Entertainment(R) games.

"Gathering concentrated feedback from our players is an important step for us as we head into the final stretch of development for StarCraft II and the new Battle.net service," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We look forward to having our players' help in polishing the overall experience and preparing for launch."

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the sequel to Blizzard Entertainment's 1998 hit StarCraft, which has been hailed by players and critics worldwide as one of the top real-time strategy games of all time. Sporting a vibrant new 3D-graphics engine, StarCraft II will once again center on the clash between the protoss, terrans, and zerg, with each side deploying legions of veteran, upgraded, and brand-new unit types. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is currently slated to ship in the first half of 2010.

In addition, Blizzard Entertainment will again offer unparalleled online play through Battle.net, the company's world-renowned gaming service. A new version of Battle.net will be launched alongside StarCraft II with several enhancements and new features to establish it as the premier online gaming destination for Blizzard gamers.

To set up a Battle.net account and sign up for a chance to participate in the StarCraft II beta test, please visit the official Battle.net website at http://www.battle.net.[/blockquote]

I wouldn't be able to play multiplayer... unless my Neighbour suddenly sells his land for a B.net server, and even then, I'd have to pay for a cord to go directly to his house.

Quick question, is there Securom on it? If so I'm not going to bother picking it up for the Single player. Or even install it regardless of purchase for that matter, too much of a pain...

...with the searching of a crack for my legit copy, then the use of Yasu, and then going through the registry for an hour or so deleting it... ugh... that's wrong that I have to spend upwards an hour and a half ridding my computer of software that I don't want... Virus' are easier to rid of.

[/angst]
I hope it's good. Kinda be a let down if it wasn't.

*Edit
And it will answer my unasked question of, if the resource system has changed. Preferably to a Supreme Commander set up.

Resource management is still minerals/vespene gas/food (or control or psi), and I don't believe it will use Securom.

I wish I had a computer that could run it. But I plan on having one by the time the full game comes out. Still, ditto on being excited about a beta. I'm not even going to be playing it.

And it's still the best selling RTS of all time.

Yes Kanye, of all time.

*sigh* It doesn't look like I got chosen for the beta :(

it wont have securom but you will almost definately have to go through some sort of online activation

the way they have done it in the past is that, if you got a copy of the game, you could play its bare bones normally, but if you wanted to go online and get the updates/multiplayer, it would sort of, scramble your game files so you couldnt play it

supreme commanders resource system would be FAIL for this game, it revolves around mining minerals and collecting gas, from stationary nodes...see the battle reports on the SC2 website

Okay, so I have a little SCII beta icon next to the Beta Profile link but when I click the icon it just takes me to the profile page. Is this the same for everyone else?

I have signed up for the beta when the Escapist told me about it (thanks!) and so I REALLY hope that they let me into the beta. Even though I have never used Battle.net until now...

Alright, that's good to know.

With the Lack of Securom, and the traditional resource management kept, I'll probably pick it up for the Skirmish mode.

[sub]God I hate Securom...[/sub]

That icon just means that you are registered for the SC 2 beta.
