Lucasfilm Working on Star Wars Cartoon for Preschoolers

The existence of a new Star Wars cartoon based on a line of super-deformed toys has leaked out of Skywalker Ranch.

A source at IESB [http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8755:iesb-exclusive-new-star-wars-animated-series-on-its-way&catid=43:exclusive-features&Itemid=73] has revealed a new Star Wars animated series that will be based on the Star Wars: Galactic Heroes line of toys. The Galactic Heroes toys are a collection of super-deformed miniature figures that include a wide variety of characters from Lando Calrissian to Yoda.

A director has just been hired to guide the new show, which reportedly has a working title of Squishies. This may seem like an incredibly odd name, but it makes a little more sense when you consider that a very young audience of preschoolers to kindergartners is being targeted for the show. Even for a kid's cartoon, this is a pretty young age group, so maybe Squishies could end up being some kind of educational program in the same vein as Yo Gabba Gabba or the like, but one that features lightsabers and Boba Fett. I, for one, think that would be pretty cool for kids.

The MTV Movie Blog [http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2010/03/19/kid-friendly-star-wars-series-in-very-early-development-lucasfilm-says/] received comment from Lucasfilm Animation that appears to confirm the project: "Lucasfilm Animation has many projects in development. One is for a younger audience but it's in very early development and too early for any details." Some are calling this new show a money grab, but I think it's way too early to judge.

The transition of Hasbro's Star Wars: Galactic Heroes toys into an animated series is reminiscent to what was done with Hasbro's television series [http://www.hasbro.com/marvel/en_US/superherosquad/shop/browse.cfm] that is currently in production and expected by 2012.

Well there goes the legacy. Way to go George Lucas, you fucking moron.

EDIT: George, I get the idea you want to appeal to kids, that's what Super Hero Squad is trying to do with the Marvel superheroes. But there's something you have to remember: SUPER HERO SQUAD SUCKS BALLS. This isn't opinion, it's fucking fact. They've completely ignored almost every part of every character's continuity and turned the villains into jokes (seriously, Dr. Doom got utterly shafted by those hacks). I get that you want to make Star Wars more popular than it already is, but here's an idea: let it die. The younger generation will get exposed to Star Wars the way we did: through the movies. Stop trying to make Star Wars fresh and just do something else. E.T.'s over there waiting for you to fuck him up, y'know.

EDIT 2: Oh no, wait, E.T. was Spielburg...

Star Wars.

With all this shit, it's hard to believe it was ever good.

Let's hope it is remembered for what it was millenia from now, not what it is.

As one of the SW fans who is devoted to continuity, this is a disaster. The big appeal of the Star Wars canon is that nothing is left out. There is room for everything in the continuity.

Unfortunately, one of the rules is that anything made by George Lucas is word of God, and continuity must bend to accommodate his whims.

In other words, Squishies is considered closer to the original vision of Star Wars than Knights of the Old Republic, all because George Lucas said so.

God Fucking Damn It.

I remember how when Star Wars used to be just a movie that most critics thought people would forget about. Now that it's gone to the biggest space theme used throughout film and media ol George must love the taste of Cash cow milk

So he's trying to bring Star Wars to a new age group.

Whats wrong with that exactly?

The product isn't targeted for those who saw the origional movies, so I don't really mind.

THANK YOU!

I hate how Hardcore Star Wars fans hated the new trilogy because of Jar Jar Binks. He was just a newer comic relief to replace C3-P0.

Most "hardcore" Star Wars fans hate the new movies, because the secretly love them. I personally don't hate any of the new films (except maybe The Clone Wars), but there are parts of them that just don't sit well.

The set up of the new films is great, but some of the execution needed a lot of work. Anakin Skywalker was a fascinating character, but Hayden Christensen just didn't have the talent to give the character any more complexity than a wood stump.

A couple of points:
(A) This cartoon will be stupid.
(2) My wife and I are addicted to the toys it's based on - they're excellent bath toys for the rug rats and are a hell of a lot easier to pick up than the regular action figures.

2012?!

Jesus frog on a pogo-stick, it was supposed to be out in 2010, then 2011, now 2012!?

How hard is it to make a tv series George? TV shows get shat out all the time, and some of them stick around for awhile.
