Natal 2 Already In Development

A representative from Microsoft's research team in Asia let loose that the team is already working on the next iteration of Natal before the first one is even released.

Microsoft's motion control system, which is currently called Project Natal, is quite the technological innovation. But as Hsiao-Wuen Hon, managing director of Microsoft Research Asia, the company's research team isn't resting on its laurels this time and is busy trying to advance the tech for the next version. Hon says that this is contrast to how Microsoft used to function, admitting that the company was slow to adopt new techonologies in the past.

"When we do invent something first like the Natal kind of scenario, while we have a researcher working with the product group for the first version, we already have a researcher thinking about the second version down the road so we certainly hope we will continue to be holding that technology. I really love what Microsoft is doing," Hon said.

Hon said that Microsoft is trying to change its image as an innovator of consumer electronics, instead of the larger corporate software on which the company built its fortune. This prevented them from taking risks and making the equivalents of the iPod or TiVo.

"Looking back I can say we probably should have done more in the consumer space. When we talk about an 'enterprise user' they are actually the same person because when they go home they are consumers," Hon said.

"We are aware that we are not necessarily a media darling. People don't perceive us as innovative as we actually are. Many of them use our products but don't know it," he continued.

Microsoft seems to be betting that Natal is the next big thing in consumer electronics, as they move away from graphical user interfaces into what they coin as natural user interaction (NUI).

"We've spent an unreasonable amount of money in order to build prototypes of things that predict the future," said Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft.

It remains to be seen whether Natal ends up being the future or if those future-predicting robots cough up another Zune...

Now let's just hope it won't turn into another Power Glove.

This isn't too shocking, the only big shock is that they dared to publicly admit it. I wouldn't be too surprised if Sony is already working on Move2 and Nintendo has already done their research for the follow up to the Wii. If they wouldn't start now, chances are they'd be behind when the other giant makes a move.

Why release Natal 1 if they don't need consumer input or data for the sequal?

Alright, just joking. It's not very good business ethic but if they think they can turn a buck on it that's up to them. Personally I don't think that this will be much more successful than the sega 32x or the atari jaguar cd but that's just my humble opinion.

I wonder what sort of reaction it would get if Duke Nukem Forever 2 was announced though.

Theres nothing I want more than project Natal to fail, I hate motion control so far, I'll try it but I'm not expecting anything good.

I really really dislike it when people try and push forward too fast. This is an example. They should focus on what they have rather than what they might have.

Now correct me if im wrong but doesnt this happen all the time? Although with something like this I would think they would wait a bit, but they might just be getting started on the work so they are ready for the feedback from the first when the get it (if they're smart). I'm not really surprised by this.

This isn't good. Starting already limits the feedback necessary to make improvements. This doesn't bode well for the first version either. Does this mean it is so obviously flawed that they have had to start again but cannot afford to totally scap the first version?

I guess they want to show how dedicated they are to this direction. But it looks odd with the first Natal's projected price telling people how desperate they are. Of course if I was so envolved the project's successor was already being developed, I'd be desperate to make the first do well too.

Its a but preemtive? Already working on the second stage when the first one has yet to even be greeted by the public?

That seems like bad R&D to me

You can't always fit every whiz-bang and who-dad into the first iteration of a product. You often earmark certain features as something interesting, that you'd like to look into for the next go round. If you perpetually increase the feature-list for a product in development, it will remain perpetually in development. At a certain point, you cut off input of new features, and polish the features and functions that you currently have.

You know how you could advance a product better? Get customer feedback on the product before improving it. You know, to actually fix the problems with your first one rather than continuing to have them in there.
Also, your consumers bought the 360 over other consoles for a reason. If they wanted motion control, they would have gotten a Wii (PS3's sixaxis doesn't realy feel like motion control to me). Don't try to shift from your loyal supporters to another crowd, especially one that is easily bored with the technology, forcing you to come crawling back to your old fans who probably still aren't forgiving you.

Seems to me it'd be wiser to see how well a product actually sells before starting the second iteration. Especially a product many people (like myself) see as a step backward.

I actually have no problem with it. Even though Natal 1 isn't out yet I'm sure it's in final stages to be shipped. The fact that they aren't going to sit by and see how it does but instead are moving ahead is good in my mind. Most likely Natal 2 will be on the next gen console so I see nothing wrong with allowing Xbox 360 owners to check out what Natal's about and if it's good it'll be even better the next time around. It happens all of the time with technology. You know Intel has some crazy CPU tech but are they going to release it now? Noway! They take steps with their products to get more money. It kind of sucks but it all makes sense in a business perspective. MS certainly should've kept Natal 2 under wraps, however.
