Pakistan Bans Facebook Over "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day"

Pakistan has banned access to Facebook [http://www.facebook.com] over the controversial "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day," leading Facebook to issue strong comments about the importance of freedom of speech - right before it blocked access to the page from India.

May 20 was "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day," a "freedom of speech" protest against Islamic extremists who threaten death against anyone who dares render an image of the prophet Mohammed. It all began with the censorship of a Facebook group [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/201_%28South_Park%29] has attracted well over 115,000 fans.

The nation of Pakistan is not among them, however. Following a court order, access to Facebook from within the country was blocked entirely and although the ban is scheduled to be lifted on May 31, that deadline could very easily be extended. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority also blocked access to YouTube [http://www.youtube.com] for carrying "sacrilegious content."

Facebook responded by saying it was "disappointed" with the decision but insisted that it won't remove the offending page. "We strongly believe that Facebook users have the freedom to express their opinions, and we don't typically take down content, groups or pages that speak out against countries, religions, political entities or ideas," the company said in a statement.

But don't get too excited about passing out medals of freedom just yet. Facebook may be talking the talk about the Pakistan situation but it's taken a slightly different approach with India, where it has voluntarily blocked access to the controversial page. "Out of respect for the local regulations, standards and customs, we have decided to restrict access to the 'Everyone Draw Mohammed!' page from India, after being contacted by authorities and reviewing the matter closely," a Facebook rep said yesterday. "We have not removed the Page from Facebook, but have only restricted access to it from India." Facebook may consider blocking access to the page from Pakistan as well, the rep added.

I honestly can't tell: Is this hugely hypocritical, or does it just really feel that way?

No, that's damn hypocritical

If someone in India wants to view the page, Facebook shouldn't tell them they can't

Well, the page is ignorant and retarded and personally, I think it should be removed. Idiots should not be tolerated.

EDIT: Because of the many people who failed to understand, and thus responded aggresively, most notably this guy:

Like yourself you mean? This great country is founded on freedom of speech, and I for one applaud those willing to speak out against those damn extremist, especially thru art.

I think I'll draw the "Mona Mohammed".
I'm going to expand.

The page is needlessly offensive to Muslims, the whole thing could be handled much more maturely. Just because you have freedom of speech doesn't mean you shouldn't try to avoid insults, regardless of what the opposition does to you. The page just makes things worse, and if people decide to react like this the whole thing is never going to end. Even though I realise this kind of thing will probably never die down completely, it doesn't mean we can't at least attempt to resolve it. It's not about fear of what extremists will do, it's about respecting other people's beliefs.

Well, it was made to envoke a reaction into how crazy they are. Goal achieved! Probably a step too far on the groups part, but threatening death to anyone who draws mohammed is silly.

Maybe... Just maybe, everyone does not want these websites banned in India and Pakistan.

I know it sounds crazy, but just think about for a while. ;)

It is very odd that they decided on two different courses for the same problem IMO, or am I missing some significant differences.

And people wonder why it's always the muslims that are stereotyped as extremist nuts. Facebook doesn't get off either though for the massive hypocrisy.

Your freedom of religion ends where my freedom of expression begins. Here in the Western World, sacrilege is NOT a crime. I could post a picture of various religious figures sodomizing each other, and there is NO LEGAL ACTION WHATSOEVER that adherents of those religions could take other than call me names. At that point, however, I'd probably have a pretty strong case for a defamation of character lawsuit.

reminds me of a quote: "don't like it, don't look." srsly, stfu about your fictional character. other religious figures get parodied to death, often by their own worshippers, but nobody complains. they should stop being so butthurt about it and just ignore it. if their god is so damned powerful and they have so much faith in him, let them enjoy the fact that their place in the 'afterlife' is secured, and leave us to our 'sins'. this goes for any other denomination. i'm sick of hearing your judgment about other people's lives and ways.
