Ubisoft Taking its Time With Beyond Good and Evil 2

It's been awhile since we last heard anything about Beyond Good and Evil, but Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot says that's because it wants to make it as good as can be.

This time last year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94180-Ubisoft-Putting-Beyond-Good-Evil-2-On-Hold], word got out that work on Beyond Good and Evil 2 had stopped and the game had been put on hold. But according to Guillemot, that isn't - and was never - true, and work continues unabated.

Guillemot says that developer Michel Ancel plans to come out with something very exciting, and hoped that people could be patient while he made the game "perfect." The original Beyond Good and Evil wasn't a strong seller when it was released in 2003, but become increasingly popular as the years went on. Guillemot said that he felt the game's disappointing sales were because it was a little too ahead of its time.

As to why Ubisoft is making a sequel at all, Guillemot said that innovation was in the company's DNA. He cited games like Rayman and Assassin's Creed as titles that broke the mold, and said it was important to take risks from time to time. With the original Beyond Good and Evil having such a cult following, however, the risk involved in a sequel seems relatively low.

Well well well. A developer admitting that it takes time to make good games. that's quite the confession.

I'm glad that they're willing to take the time to make it good. I'm just sad that there appeared a glitch in my BG&E that made it impossible to finish. :(

Huzzah! Great news, as the original was so good. Hopefully they can rise to the challenge. :)

I played the game and liked the game, but I'm not sure if this is an accurate statement. The game seemed like an Ocarina of Time clone, for the most part. Not a bad thing, mind. But I don't see what was ahead of anything.

Game can now be considered vapourware

They should re-release Beyond Good and Evil, that game was brilliant!

I tried buying it again once but could only find a PC copy that my PC couldn't run D: It's bugging me that i got right near the end of the game but didn't quite complete it.

The game was finished two years ago. They've spent the time since working on draconian DRM that will require a constant internet connection to a server that's only operational at four randomly chosen hours of the day for single player mode and will periodically ask you to forward Ubisoft a package containing samples of your blood and spinal fluid for undisclosed purposes.

Ah, the original. Came out when Ubisoft was "cool".

I really do hope their current trend for making idiotic decisions doesn't impact this though. It's too good to be subjected to corporate quality reducing.
They have been very schizophrenic as of late. AC2 came out and was fantastic (an example of how to listen to the consumer), then they announce their DRM (an example of how not to listen to the consumer), then they bring out the good-but-odd Conviction.

Do you not remember the huge cliffhanger ending of the first one? That is why it needs a sequel. Take your time Ubi. What is another year or 2?

I still haven't played more than a couple of minutes of the original game.

It's on my to-play list. Along with a few dozen other already purchased games.

I'm glad Michel Ancel is still there. Makes me feel reassured. And sure, I'm willing to wait for it; I'm good at waiting.

I'm glad that they're actually working very hard on this one instead of trying to rush it out. I don't care how long it will take.
