Valve: PlayStation 3 Incredibly Important to Us

PlayStation 3 owners haven't had the most support from Valve, and the developer says that it wants to make it up them.

After a less-than-stellar version of the Orange Box and the complete absence of the Left 4 Dead games, it's safe to say that PS3 owners got a bit of a raw deal from Valve. The studio said that it didn't feel like it could deliver [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92875-Valve-Explains-Lack-of-PlayStation-3-Support] the kind of experiences that PS3 owners deserved, so it until it could put together a dedicated team, the PS3 would remain Valve-less.

All that changed at E3 in June however, when Portal 2 was announced for the console, and it seems that that is just the beginning. Erik Johnson, a project manager for Valve, says the studio is keen to make it all up to PS3 owners, and that Steamworks - which was announced alongside Portal 2 - would be a big part of that.

"PS3 is incredibly important to us," he said. "We don't feel that the PS3 users had the Valve experience that we like to deliver ... so in that case it's incredibly important to us [that] we kind of fix everything wrong in the products that we delivered before for the PS3, which we thought were good but weren't quite the Valve experience."

It's a little tricky to square away Valve's new attitude with its previous comments about the PS3, but even when Gabe Newell was calling the machine a "waste of time [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/77826-Gabe-Newell-Calls-PlayStation-3-A-Waste-of-Time]," it was the case that Valve was worried about doing a good job on the console. If Steamworks allows Valve to do that, then it's hard to see a downside.

I just loved when the surprise happened at E3, I heard one guy just shout out loud 'OH MY GOD!!!"

And bloomin' heck Logan, you're up late...wait, I can't talk...I'm up late too...

It's great that VALVe have decided to turn to the dark side support the PS3, and it's very nice to have Steamworks integrated with PSN, allowing VALVe to work much more closely to their games on the PS3 instead of letting EA just port it and scramble for a patch when things predictably don't work out.

Very this.
Also, I hope this doesn't mean Valve won't support the 360 anymore. The 360 is going to be the only console (besides the Wii) without Steamworks soon. It's great that they're expanding from the PC, but the 360 should be included in their expansion too.

Um, thanks, Valve, but you're coming off a bit needy. Not that it isn't appreciated. :)

I feel all lonely on my 360 now. I want some Valve love. ;_;

Never mind, I would just use my PC however I don;t think it can handle any new games.

This whole Steam on PS3 thing seems to be really overlooked. Outside of a few other websites, nobody has really mentioned anything.

But I would be pretty suspicious with this short episode of going from one end of the hate spectrum aaaalll the way to the love end. Or something like that at least...

But I'm happy to see support.

Fixed.

If they spent more time on HL2E3 as they are on the PS3 then it would have been done by now

Totally agreed, I mean, I'm something of a PS3 fangirl, but 360 owners have been loyal supporters of Valve, so it'd be a real jerk move, not to mention an immensely stupid one, to make it appear that they're being kicked to the curb.

The PS3 or 360 will never have as long a support life as the PC from valve and I will laugh at anyone who thinks otherwise.

Sounds a lot like "We've just realised a lot of money could come from the ps3, please forgive me and buy my games".

I don't hold anything against them though they're a brilliant developer. You don't need to ask for forgiveness *hugs* just keep makin awesome games :3

Oh and i just thought, only console owners will have a real physical copy of Valve games, huzzar! No digital distribution for us ^_^
I'm sure Valve will be nice enough to work something out for PC owners though once their servers finally give in. At least i hope so, i've got a ton of games on Steam D:

This is just kind of sad. "Incredibly important to us?" What, exactly, changed your minds? You could at least say, "Yeah, OK, we were kind of retarded, sorry guys."

PS3 is important to Valve, but is Valve important to the PS3? I don't think so.

We've gotten along fine without them. I don't see why they feel the sudden urge to start developing for the PS3. Oh yeah, money.
