they wanted an extortionate amount of cash for valve to release their updates. sony put up a BETTER offer and they went with sony. micro$oft lost valve to sony due to their greed.
You mean the fact that Microsoft won't release any content for free?

I think the change of attitude among Valve and other developers is largely that they are learning that the PS-3 really does have more long-term potential especially as the console generation wears on, and the 360 begins to show it's age as it reaches the peak of it's capabilities. I look at the recent "Final Fantasy XIII" contreversy as a sign of that where it is pointed out that the PS-3 version of the game was superior, and superior enough where it's graphics were being used to sell the game for the 360.

What's more the PS-3 is apparently going to be the first to involve any serious MMORPGs, with DCU coming in a couple of months and apparently seeing a console release for real, and also the less exciting (but still noteworthy) arrival of "FreeRealms". Getting the "captive audience" of people playing MMORPGs on it is going to do a lot to promote the console. Especially if they manage to do "DCU" without the subscription fees as implied in some places.

That said I find it hard to get all that excited, and not just because I currently own every game machine out there. I respect Valve as a "shooter" developer, despite it not being my genere of choice, but they take so bloody long to build games, that it seems unlikely that we'll see anything new and exciting for the PS-3 for a while.

See, my inner cynic tells me that Gabe hasn't had a major change of heart with the PS-3. He's simply realizing that "Steamworks" will allow him to port games over to the PS-3 pretty easily, and that means Valve can take it's older library of games and "shovelware" them onto the PS-3 for some quick cash from a new audience. Basically re-selling the "Left 4 Dead" games for example, with maybe a slightly higher graphics resolution.

For there to be a real change of heart with Valve we'd need to see some PS-3 exclusives, or something truely new and innovative with a simultaneous release, and while that release might be "Portal 2" I still pretty much take an "I'll believe it when I see it attitude" because with their release schedule for all I know we'll REALLY see "Portal 2" bundled with "Half Life 3" which will be produced AFTER "Episode 3" whenever they finally get around to that.

Valve might make quality games (albiet shooters), but they are hardly a prolific producer.

Valve, I welcome you with open arms. Hopefully they update the games they already have on PS3 and give us ones we've never had like L4D.

I have the feeling that Sony is finally allowing Valve more wiggle room with their console and are trying to get Valve on their side since the Left 4 Dead sales that PC and (more importantly) the Xbox had was completely missed by the PS3, and Sony knows it needs to cut every advantage the 360 has over them if they even want to begin to get second place in this console generation.

Ive seen this elaborate yet obvious move of apologizing to said faction in return of parting of their currency for the exact same unimproved product that other platforms have once had, and no Valve i'm not going to part with my cash from being neglected and then given a crappy response for an "interest".

Well its nice to know that Valve hasn't just ignored the PS3.
Hope to see more Valve games on the PS3 in the future!!

I never really got the impression that Valve was against the PS3 so much as they were unfamiliar with it and unsure that they could deliver the same quality of content that customers have come to expect from them on the PC.

Sounds like for whatever reason they've made the decision to get a team together, build the expertise they need, and knuckle down to make that happen on the PS3.

Am I getting this wrong? I'm a little confused by the amount of bile flying around.

I might have to buy portal two for the PC, since it sounds like the xbox isn't getting any love and I want the awesomeness of steam. And that's really saying something, since I don't even have a working windows operating system on my computer (ubuntu linux ftw) and it's not exactly a high end gaming machine...

"We don't feel that the PS3 users had the Valve experience that we like to deliver ... so in that case it's incredibly important to us [that] we kind of fix everything wrong in the products that we delivered before for the PS3, which we thought were good but weren't quite the Valve experience."
From the sounds of this, does that mean they're going to redo the Orange Box so it's actually a high-quality port and not the messy drivel that EA spurted out?

see? they were partly holding off to at least deliver things properly rather than half-assing the job
I mean, their feelings towards the black brick may still stand but hey, at least they still wanna deliver the goods

Very this.
Also, I hope this doesn't mean Valve won't support the 360 anymore. The 360 is going to be the only console (besides the Wii) without Steamworks soon. It's great that they're expanding from the PC, but the 360 should be included in their expansion too.

You can't get Steamworks on 360 because it's Microsoft's console and they wouldn't allow it. They're just that kind of douchebags. I think someone said something about TF2 updates coming out on 360, but as a big bundle for a small price because Microsoft are that kind of douchebags who won't let it go for free. It's the same reason the Crash Course campaign for Left 4 Dead came with a price tag.
