Valve Not Interested in "Selling Out"

The guys at Valve Software [http://www.valvesoftware.com/] say they have no interest in taking the company public because they don't want to have to worry about keeping shareholders happy.

Valve would probably rake in a ton of money if it made an IPO. Between its stable of hit game franchises and its wildly popular digital distribution service [http://store.steampowered.com/], Valve seems like it just cannot lose. Don't expect it to happen anytime soon, though, because Gabe and the gang don't like what they see when they look at other companies that have gone public.

"All [companies that go public] end up getting their customers changed," Project Manager Erik Johnson said in the latest issue of PC Gamer. "Any bad decision I ever see out there is because somebody created this different customer that was whoever funds them, and not the consumer of the product."

"You end up with a totally different set of decisions,"added Valve boss Gabe Newell, "and the person who's trying to design the experience is like, 'Okay, I guess we'll put Christopher Walken in our game'."

It's fun and easy to zing Valve for its inability to do anything in a timely manner, a shortcoming most glaringly highlighted by the continued absence of Half-Life 2: Episode 3. But nobody takes it too seriously because although Valve is slow, it's also unerringly brilliant. The addition of outside money-men might speed up the process, but at what cost? Haste makes waste, as they say, and given the choice I think most gamers would admit that they'd rather put up with Valve time [http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time].

I'm glad to see this.
As long as they keep making great games, I'm fine with their business practices. Anyway, they have Steam to support them too, right? With all their sales, it seems like a win-win situation.
They aren't having any glaring money problems that would bring this up, are they?

"You end up with a totally different set of decisions," added Valve boss Gabe Newell, "and you can no longer choose to eat that extra greasy double meat hamburger. Instead they make you fast to be more 'presentable' in front of the media"

"Um...Gabe, they wouldn't do that. Going public wouldn't change your eating habits."

"Really? Public it is then."

No, but seriously that's a wise call by them.

While I would personally own VALVe stock, I am really glad to hear this. When companies go public, they have the responsibility of answering to their stockholders and not to their community.

They would be forced to deliver products before they were completed and polished, and that just isn't their style. Also, God forbid they ever decided to replace Gabe... The gaming community might rise as one and bring about the apocolypse.

They just dont want to have a publishing date for their games. I think that's the real reason. I think that if you told Gabe Newell that he NEEDED tho have Episode 3 done by (insert date here) and that the time for constant delays is over, I think his head would explode.

I've always said I'd prefer a delayed game to a mess of bugs. Brings to mind the pirate copy of Wolverine. I was only slightly interested in the film as a whole, but I had NO interest in seeing an unfinished cut.

Once you go public and you have investors and such going on about profit margins... you get input like "ah, but if you just...change this....and then take this bit out... you will sell twice as many copies" even though its not as good. I call it the mcdonalds effect - food that has no flavour offends no-one and can be sold to everyone, but I defy you to find anyone who enjoys a mcdonalds as much as a "proper" meal out (or in!)

Yes. Put Walken in Ep 3, Valve!

Or, y'know, actually make it at all. That works too.

EDIT: Oh, and we love you, Valve!

This only reminds me of how much I wish I'd purchased shares in Nintendo before the DS was announced.

Ripper.

"The wheels of justice are turning!"

Well... I guess this is a good thing. At least Valve doesn't have shareholders to please.

Cool to see them say that. But I can't imagine it's a big deal not to go public. I imagine they rake in a buttload of money from Steam anyway. Who needs to go public when you have that?

This is a good sign. Let's just hope they don't make a successful MMO.
