Well, I'm the type for racing games.

It's just that the kinds of racing games I actually like are pretty damn narrow. For example, I like neither Mario Kart nor Gran Turismo, because I'm not interested in RNG bullshit or spending all day figuring out what ten million different settings mean and how to adjust them to shave milliseconds off my lap times.

People keep talking up that 2017 had a lot of good racers, but I've never been able to get names out of people. That's what I want: the actual titles of these racers that supposedly came out this year.

I also like shooters, but I was never a fan of Halo, and I think Call of Duty hasn't been worth shit since the first Modern Warfare.

So for me, 2017 has been fucking barren.

People saying this year has many bad games forget that each year has plenty of bad games but you're only going to remember the good ones. The BS of the industry long ago has been forgotten but today's BS is still fresh. But then games that I remember as good, actually turn out to be buggy messy or have terrible storylines. Looking at you Baulders Gate, Fallout 2, System Shock, Duke Nukem. Or they just as exciting as you remember in your head like Halo, Half Life, Morrowind.

Also Divinity OS 2? How did that miss the cut? Tides of Numaneria? I'd also put War of the Chosen on there. That was a massive expansion to an already good game. Morrowind for ESO was also another great giant expansion. As people pointed out Prey, Sonic Mania and Persona was missed (Didn't play the latter so I don't know about that). What about Dead Cells and Pit People

Now dont get me wrong theres been plenty of good this year.

However theres been far too much shit for it to be the best year.

[sub]Also like fuck im going to call a year without a single fucking good RTS release a 'good' year in vidya[/sub]

if not the best, then one of 'em. From the point of view of a fan of japanese games, anyway. I'd imagine depending on other tastes it could have been underwhelming or even bad, so I don't really fault anyone for voting "nay", but for me it was basically a year of Christmases, so yay for me.

Very true. Context is relevant.

Platform is another distinction worth mentioning as well as single/multiplayer.

I'm a PC Singleplayer Gamer with standards and integrity.
A hard thing to be in todays market.

I've played all sorts of genres, so on that account I'm not too fussy.
My main things are RPG's (Crpgs, Arpgs, rogue-like), 4X games and "Builders" as I like to call them (Ranging from Terraria-esque & Dwarf Fortress-esque to Settlers-like and Anno 1404 types).

The standards I'm talking about is no DRM, no "campy" mechanics or gameplay (skewed over-the-shoulder cam, quick-time events, 30fps, framerate tied to engine, push a button & do a series of events/contextual, and a host of other dumbed-down console-inspired shit).
Integrity means that I don't fall for hype and research a game before duly before I even consider buying it while also disdaining greedy publishers and developers.

Cue the calls for "elitist PC Master Race". ,)

How do you defend Tekken 7 against its SHIT DLC's, MISSING game modes and CHARACTERS and GARBAGE "character episodes"? The fighting mechanics alone cover it all?

OT: 07 was the best. It was the best year in every other thing too. I miss 2007. I'll miss it until I die.

Almost exactly what I look for in my gaming as well, though replace 4X with vehicle sims and visual novels.

Frankly, 2017 has been a kinda shit year for PC games. Nothing of any real note has come out this year that I can recall. All the best games I've played this year have been from 2016 and 2015. I have just started on Doki Doki Literature Club however, so that might actually turn out to be the one decent game of the year. Maybe Senua's Sacrifice as well, though I've not started that and likely won't get around to it until next year.

I went through a list of my most memorable favorite games, and found that it ranged from 1998 to 2007.

The year with the most number of games:
2003, with such gems as Beyond Good & Evil, Freelancer, Harbinger, Master of Orion III and Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic.
Followed by 2001 with Anachronox, Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and Startopia.

Granted, this was only from direct memory and I may have forgotten some titles.
I do find that most of my games can be found within the '95 to '05 decade.
After those years it becomes increasingly harder to find a good game and nowadays I'm lucky to even find one every other year.
I'm reduced to only looking at Indie games and alpha/betas as it is.

So. Nay. Not a single 2017 game got my attention.
This is pretty much me too.
I have not played many games that were actually released this year. Games are too fucking expensive. There are several I wanted to play like Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn and Mario Odyssey, but I can't afford it. So given that gaming has become so goddamn expensive making it a more niche, as well as the Battlecunts II fiasco I'm giving this year the thumbs down.

I'll put it this way, I've enjoyed more games released this year than I haven't even with some of the games that are marred by publisher bollocks (Shadow of War), I still mostly enjoyed them than not.
Its been a good year overall. I'd like to add Agents of Mayhem as a major surprisingly fun game I'm honestly shocked more people haven't been talking about or at least mentioning it as a game that slid in under-the-radar being a lot of fun. It was marketed weird though which is probably why people didn't pick up on it at release. But I do recommend it for Saints Row fans, and in a way it feels kinda like a mixture of SR and the missing Overwatch campaign mode Blizzard should have honestly developed and released.

At the end of last year, I was thinking about all the great games that I played (even if none were amazing).
At the end of this year, I played a few amazing games, but I felt rather burned out. A lot of this is general life stuff, but I'm also to the point where I haven't played a lot of the year's big games... and don't really want to, either.

Huh? Gaming is a pretty damn cheap hobby even compared to other game related hobbies like board gaming that is much more expensive. You can get any new game for $48 at Best Buy on release day. Play the game for a couple months and then sell it on eBay getting back $30-$40 and thus play even newest games at most $20. Or you can just wait for sales like picking up all the years games on Black Friday. I got Wolfenstein 2 for $25 and the Dishonored standalone DLC on disc for $15. I finished Wolfenstein and I now have it up on eBay. PC gaming is probably cheaper than it's ever been because games aren't pushing hardware much at all these days, especially the vast majority of PC exclusives are far less graphically intensive like Divinity Original Sin 2 (I'm currently playing the 1st one on a desktop without a video card).

Uh Huh. Let's see, to play those three games I mentioned let me break down the costs.
Playstation 4 - $380 (CND)
Nintendo Switch - $470 (CND)
Horizon Zero Dawn - $50 (CND)
Super Mario Odyssey - $80 (CND)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - $80 (CND)

I hope you can see why I think gaming is too fucking expensive.

On Amazon.ca, PS4's are $350. I'm not sure if that's a sale price or what. I know PS4s could be had for years now for $250 American brand new. That's not even counting trying out the used market obviously. That's not a lot for a device that'll play basically every new game for probably 7 years. People spend way more on their phones alone when they totally don't have to when a $100-$150 phone will do everything and more that's needed and you can probably switch carriers and get one for free even (my cell phone was completely free and I didn't even have to sign up for a contract). And you don't have to get a console in its first year or even two, wait for a couple price drops and play your backlog of games. Or, of course, you can PC game for pretty damn cheap if you don't want to buy consoles. And games are cheaper than that. Sure it costs that much money upfront but you can sell them and recoup at least half your initial cost. You can easily buy and play your 5 most anticipated games each year for about $100 buying them on release day even as no game should end up costing more than $20 to play. $100 is the equivalent of the cheapest yearly Netflix subscription. What other hobby is nearly as cheap as gaming?

Maybe I should've specified that AAA gaming is too fucking expensive. Evidently I'm the only one who thinks that 80 fucking dollars is outrageous.

I was talking about AAA gaming. You can buy Day 1 and sell after you finish the game. You can wait for sales. Divinity Original Sin 2 isn't AAA and costs $45 on Steam and you can't sell it either, that's more expensive than buying Mario or Zelda or Horizon and selling it when you're done. Plus, games were literally more expensive not even taking inflation into account when I was a kid as a game was $70, now they're $60. For the hours of entertainment you get per $1, gaming is probably the cheapest entertainment medium right now. You can game on the equivalent of a Netflix yearly subscription. Magic the Gathering cost more to play yearly on its own than video games. An Escape Room costs $50 per person for about an hour. Just about any board game cost more than any video game. How is video gaming expensive when compared to any other hobby? Sure, it's a luxury like any other entertainment or hobby, but you'd be hard pressed to find any other kind of entertainment/hobby cheaper than video games.
