Question of the Day, October 1, 2010

Capcom thinks Resident Evil: Revelations for the 3DS is so scary that gamers won't be able to finish it. Have you ever not been able to finish a game because it was too scary? What game was it, and which scene?

Yes, when I first played Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone on the PSone. Hey, don't judge me I was very young, and I'd never come across anything like those suits of armour before.

Eternal Darkness had this effect on me when I was younger. It was the bit with Alex Roivas dead in the bath. It was so completely random and threw me off so much that I hurriedly switched off the console and didn't touch the game for a year.

Yeah, I'm a pussy. :p I was 10 when I first played it though, to be fair on myself...

Never finished Silent Hill 1. Freaked me out too much when i was in the School. Then again my friend insisted that i only play at night with all the lights off. This was probably when the game just came out.

I chose the "never been scared option" only because I've never been scared enough to have to "Power on". I like a good fright or two. wakes me, up, makes me feel alive.

I get scared, but soldier on regardless. It's when the scares stop, I get accustomed to it and/or the game gives me enough guns to shoot anything scary that I stop, but that's mostly due to boredom...

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth, for PC, has been the only game to ever truly scare me, and yet somehow I was able to push through and finish it

Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut.

I had to change the code so regular zombies did no damage. And it was still the scariest thing I've ever played.

The last time I remember being scared from a game was when I was 7, playing Ocarina of Time.
Those hand monsters that drop from the ceiling in the forest temple, "wallmasters" I think, they scared the hell out of me. I got over it by killing a few of them.

Few games have given me proper creeps, but FEAR (the original), Doom 3 both made me take a break and return later (during daylight) to finish them.
The Asylum level of Painkiller also messed with my head, but not as badly as the other two.

I'm a total chicken shit in some games.

I've gotten scared easily, and as such many games freak me out.

I've never beaten any actual horror games.

Fear excluded, as it's not horror when you give me a shotgun.

Overlord DLC for ME2... to be completely truthful, though, I was stoned and the scare chord [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ScareChord] was intensely unpleasant. I just haven't gotten back around to it yet.

I couldn't finish Silent Hill 2 for about 3 years because it scared me too much.

Same with Dead Space. I still haven't finished it because I was too freaked out to play it.

Once, that game being Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

It was a part quite early on in the game, before you get any weapons, where you're in your hotel room at night and the townspeople are coming to get you.

You had to fumble and put the screws back into the lock on the door, then push a wardrobe in front of it, and then somehow escape the mob.

I never figured out how to escape from the mob (after climbing out of the window and back into another room) and because the sense of dread and impending doom was so well implemented (partly because it was a horrific set piece from The Shadow over Innsmouth, one of my favourite Lovecraft stories), I could only manage a few retries before I decided to play a lighter game or go out to the pub... that particular sense of failure was a lot more unpleasant than most.

Shortly after that my computer died, the hard disc failed, but because I'd borrowed the disc from a friend and played it from the hard drive I couldn't reinstall it and conquer my fears. I see that it's available on Steam, so I could have another bash at it, but I keep coming up with excuses not to...

Scared? no.
Cautious (i.e. knowing with certainty I can't beat the damn boss that's gonna pop out from around the corner and eat my face off)? once or twice. But that's more frustration than fear.
