U.S. Marine "Baffled" by Medal of Honor Ban

The ban on Medal of Honor [http://www.amazon.com/Medal-Honor-Limited-Xbox-360/dp/B000TI836G/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1286561449&sr=1-1] in Army and Air Force Exchange Service stores doesn't sit well with a Marine Corps corporal who pointed out that the military has no problem selling "products that actually hurt people" like tobacco and alcohol.

Corporal Aaron Hostutler of the Stars and Stripes [http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCMQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.usmc.mil%2F&rct=j&q=usmc&ei=216vTMTjMMP_lgeiuYmTBQ&usg=AFQjCNFFKA12my-glysje-S-Dp07fXC2mQ&cad=rja]. "I don't understand how Medal of Honor is any different."

There are plenty of other violent games available through the Brothers [http://www.shopmyexchange.com/], in which a captured U.S. soldier is forced at gunpoint by Islamic extremists to beat a fellow soldier to death with a pipe. Hostutler said the ban was probably put in place by "a commander who doesn't play videogames and hasn't caught up with the times yet."

Stocking the game isn't the same as endorsing it, he added, and people who find it offensive because they've been "personally affected" by the war should simply not play it. He also pointed out that while the AAFES won't carry the game, it has no problem selling other products that have actually been proven to be harmful. "They sell alcohol and tobacco too, substances that actually hurt people when they choose to use it," Hostutler said. "But it is their choice."

Medal of Honor comes out on October 12 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Totally agree, it's the same thing with drugs really. It's just stupid how people in our society can get annoyed about violent games or Taliban being in a game and yet still have alchohol and tobacco sold to people and they actually harm people.

He is with the rest of the sane people on the planet who are not living in the 1800's

also:

"Here is your gun, grenades and mission to go kill those people over there in that busy city, if you get into trouble don;t forget we can call in indescriminate artillery from a few miles away"

"Can I play xbox when I get back?"

"Good Lord no, have you seen the content in them?!"

well, atleast SOMEONE in the army isn't a Patriotic Jack Thompson. Though I do agree agree with the idea that this game isn't the worst thing being sold(he named GTA4 and MW2) I disagree with the alcohol and tobacco argument because while it's a valid argument, unlike video games the government gets a large cut of the profits from cigarettes and beer.

Too bad nobody will listen to him. That's how this world operates. There is no place for reason in this world anymore. If I was in the army I would consider this decision a proof of idiocy and I would resign immediately. I wouldn't want to be associated with an organization with no brain.

Resigning because the AAFES won't stock Medal of Honor doesn't strike me as a terribly bright thing to do. My boss makes some decisions I don't agree with, but I still love my work! No sense in spitting out the meat along with the bones.

Even though we all on this site feel strongly, I'm sure, about the inaccurate portrayal of video games by main-stream media, throwing away a career over something like this doesn't make us out to be cool, rational thinkers. We'd be just as guilty of a knee-jerk reaction as they are.

What? They don't stock my game because of silly reasons?! I quit!

This man deserves a medal. Just make an excuse and give him one. And it would read "For letting common sense shine through the shadow of idiocy to try and protect the liberties of the American people." Over-the-top? Hell yeah, and there are certainly others who agree with him, in which case, give them that medal as well. Yes, I am proposing giving them a medal for common sense, but common sense is sadly becoming less and less common...

Well, I hope they all don't think like this. That'll be a true Morale killer.

Shine on you brave gentlemen! Also, the hard men and the ladies and tomboys and... all of you rock for doing what you do.

OT: Good point sir, good point.

Calumon: Wow, he deserves a promotion!

Well I hate the army anyway, I think 90% of those guys are retarded so my opinion isn't exactly objective.

I don't know why he's baffled. The marines are afraid that the soldiers will see the horror of war while they're still close enough to home to desert.

Its true with Modern Warfare 2 as well. All they did for that game was make up a fictional name for the enemy that pretty much resembles real terrorists.

I have a renewed faith in the US army. I love how the ground forces see logic but the higher-ups don't. It's beautiful, really.

Yeah, that's a well reasoned, surely educated position. I'm sure my friends and family in the military, plus those who fought and died to preserve your right to say thinks like that would really appreciate it. Truly.
Good show.
