One Million Kinects Sold in Just Ten Days

Kinect [http://www.microsoft.com] units in just ten days and says that sales are on track to meet its goal of moving at least five million by the end of the year.

Microsoft said all the way back in upped the ante [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103571-Kinect-Will-Be-the-Biggest-Platform-Launch-Ever-Says-Microsoft] even further, projecting holiday sales of five million units. It was a bold statement, but one that also appears to have some merit.

Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, announced earlier today that one million Kinects had been sold worldwide just ten days after it hit store shelves in North America. "This is a great start to the holiday season, and we will continue to work with our retailer partners to keep pace with high demand and deliver against our plan to sell more than 5 million Kinect sensors worldwide by the end of this year," he said.

GameStop Senior Vice President of Merchandise and Marketing recently predicted that Kinect would outsell the PlayStation Move [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105131-GameStop-Kinect-Will-Beat-Move-Over-the-Holidays] over the holidays, even though Move came out nearly two months before Kinect. Sony announced in October that it had sold roughly 2.5 million Move controllers in North America and Europe, a very respectable number in its own right, but had taken a month to do so.

That's not a bad number honestly. Its nothing major sure, but for a console add-on that was a major risk, it isn't bad. But it doesn't matter how fast you run out of the box, but how fast you finish. Move and Kinect still have a long way to go.

Like I've said before, I'm torn between wanting Kinect to succeed and fail.

One part of me wants it to succeed on it's technical merit. Kinect is a very interesting piece of technology that has many potential possibilities hidden within it.

However, another part of me (the fanboy part I guess?) wants Kinect to fail just to tell Microsoft to shove it. They really have no idea how they're approaching the Kinect, with few if any "hardcore" games being announced, let alone released for it, and aren't pushing the true potential of the hardware.

Regardless, I guess I'll just conglaturate Microsoft for this. A million in 10 days is nothing to scoff at, so let's see if they'll hit that 5 million.

So far I'm having fun with it. If the hardcores wanna cry about it, Dance Central is every bit as hardcore as any FPS.

It's not bad? Are you serious? It's insanely good! Keep in mind here those things have OVER 100% MARK UP!

Microsoft is making a mint.....actually, more like 100 mints.

Well you have to take into account the one million in one week is most likely a. people who want it asap and b. parents buying it for kids for the holidays.

I would expect the sales of the kinect to come close to that of the PS move after one month.

I see a lot more plastic paperweights coming soon to living rooms all over the world. Just like the Wii, except now in black.

I would've gotten kinect just for dance central but $150 just for the kinect is too much to warrant just a one game purcase... I would've loved to play that game drunk with friends!

Good job Microsoft. Maybe Kinect has real sales potential.

Still not gonna buy one, because I have no interest in the software... yet. Maybe now that sales are good we're gonna see some more interesting titles coming out for it.

This is going to be a lot more interesting than I thought.

They are already selling on Amazon for no less then $195. Expect this to be a hot item especially if they use scarcity marketing it like the Wii did its first year.

Considering picking up several units for resale.
