Sweden Wants WikiLeaks Founder Brought Up on Rape Charges

Swedish court issued an arrest warrant today for Julian Assange, founder of the WikiLeaks site, on the charge of rape.

WikiLeaks, founded in 2006 by Assange and others, is an international organization and website that publishes content otherwise unavailable to the public, such as secret or confidential government documents. In the U.S., it is famous for having been the source of the Iraq War Logs and the Afghan War Diary; major leaks that have made international headlines and embarrassed the U.S. government to the point where the Obama administration has demanded that WikiLeaks publish no further secret American documents.

Karin Rosander, a spokesperson for the Swedish prosecutor's office announced that the courts had issued two arrest warrants, one for Europe and the other for Interpol, for the Wikileaks founder on months-old charges of "rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion." The next step would be getting an international warrant for Assange.

Assange's lawyer, Mark Stephens, claims that the charges are "false and without basis."

The charges arose in August this year, after two female WikiLeaks volunteers (its primary workforce) claimed that that they entered into consensual sex with Assange that developed into non-consensual sex after condoms were broken or removed, and Assange refused to stop despite their appeals.

It's been nearly 13 weeks since the prosecutor's office said it wanted to question Assange, and today's statement heavily implies that that has yet to happen. Just before the warrants became public, director of the Stockholm prosecutor's office Marianne Ny claimed that they had been "unable to interrogate" Assange at any time since the charges were brought up.

A statement by Stephens claims that this is no fault of Assange's. "Before leaving Sweden, Mr. Assange asked to be interviewed by the prosecution on several occasions in relation to the allegations, staying over a month in Stockholm, at considerable expense and despite many engagements elsewhere, in order to clear his name. Eventually the prosecution told his Swedish lawyer Bjorn Hurtig that he was free to leave the country, without interview, which he did."

Stephens also says that even though the charges are just being brought now, the 13 weeks of what he calls "flawed" investigation has caused perhaps irreparable harm to Assange's reputation, and that "one in 10 Internet references to the word 'rape' also include his name."

Huh. This broke on the escapist before slashdot. Color me impressed.

Also, this guy needs to learn that if you're going to go after the rich and powerful you had better keep your nose clean, or you will fry.

EDIT:

Hell, what am I talking about, you'll probably fry anyway.

I'm sure they were pretty happy.

I can't say I'm a fan of this guy. He is, after all, releasing documents that will no doubt end up getting people killed (Names of informants in active warzones that can be read anywhere...), but I have to respect the ideology behind it of forcing our leadership to be 'open' about the reality of events.

Fucking comedic gold right there :D

OT: By legal definition, its considered rape once the woman demands that sex stops and the man does not comply. It's shitty for men when a woman can all of a sudden call rape when she's done with you. I've heard of a lot of cases around my area where women are calling their ex boyfriends rapists, and its unclear weather....
1) He really raped her
2) She decided that the sex was no longer enjoyable, and to save herself embarassment, calls "rape"
3) She utilizes this tactic as an easy way to get back at her ex without looking like a total whore.

Saying "yes" and then all of a sudden saying "no" is a very grey area and I can't stand to be in this kind of a prediciment. I'm not going to condemn Assange, or deem the women sluts, but somewhere between the both of their stories will lie the truth and shit will get settled either way.

I went to this one psychology class that was talking about what deems the causes of rape and when sex is either a request or a demand that the women have no choice but to obligate themselves to doing against their will and some shenanagans, but I'm too tired to try and recall all that...

I sense reputation sabotage...

Some powerful organisations obviously don't like wikileaks, and whats the traditional approach to shutting down something you don't like?

Ruin the person who runs the organisation. The "Classic" starting point is sexual scandal.

Is this an attempt to bring down the wikileaks founder? or is he a rapist? Who knows, but it sure does seem strange.

This is what came to my mind too... when someone has a lot of influential people who want to see them gone, I take any allegations against that person with a grain of salt.

ZING!! Awesomeness right there.

I wish I could feel sorry for this guy. Even if the charges are completely false, I wish I could feel sorry for this guy. Actually, no, I don't wish I could feel sorry for this guy. You play with the big boys, you better accept the fact that you're going to get hurt.

Whether he did or did not do anything wrong doesn't matter.

The only reason this is a big deal is because he is the founder of Wikileaks. Sex crimes like this happen all the time, but are quickly dismissed by law enforcement because there is ZERO evidence of any wrongdoing (besides testimonies of course). It turns into a big game of "he said, she said" and that isn't enough for a court to convict.

So unless they have magic evidence of wrongdoing, this is clearly slander. I feel sorry for him, he's just a big walking target for this kind of thing.

Jeez. I hope he didn't do it; this guy needs to keep doing what he's doing. It would be a shame if he turned out to be guilty.

Personally, I doubt he is. Saying he was set up by the government makes me feel ridiculous and paranoid, but the guy has quite a target on his back presently, and I can't imagine it being terribly difficult to organize something like this.

But then, what do I know about such things.

Don't go down this road! It's just a coincidence that the founder of a website that has become a professional pain in the ass of several Governments has been accused of a very serious crime that also happens to be impossible to prove beyond one persons word over another!

No really, I mean that. Coincidence. It's just hard to sound sincere on the internet.
