Question of the Day, December 9, 2010

Fantasy author R.A. Salvatore says that rather than preferring 3rd or 4th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons, he likes good old 1st Edition [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105951-Drizzt-Creator-Prefers-First-Edition-Dungeons-Dragons]. Which is your favorite?

I...I've never tried to play D&D. Never really wanted to either. Just doesn't appeal to me.

It's a close call between Basic and Advanced, but Basic doesn't have this book.

Which is possibly the greatest set of tables ever.

Never tried D&D, mainly because I never really had the chance, nobody I knew played it. Chances are if someone offered me to take part in a game I might take part.

I voted Other. Why? Well simply put because I love the changes that Paizo brought to it as Pathfinder, or as many love to call it, D&D 3.75.

Why is there a "I Don't Play D&D"-option in the poll? That's not relevant to the question at all...

I got my start in 2nd Ed. 3E was just amazing when it came out. All shiny and new.
We're currently playing Pathfinder, and I have to say that that's my favourite.

Followed by the Iron Heroes (by Monte Cooke) substitute player's handbook for 3.5.

I prefer 3.7 because the game is still closer to 3.5 than 4, but yeah pathfinder is the best version of the game.

Me and my group play 3.5, and since between us we've got around forty suppliment books so I can't see us changing to another system. The cost and effort required to replace a collective library of that size is just too prohibitive, no matter how many future editions Wizards bring out. 2nd Ed will always have a place on my nostalgia shelf as it was the first system I tried, but for sheer expansive variety I've gotta go with 3.5.

Advanced will always win out for me because it's where I got my start 20 years ago. I "helped" my dad DM in as much as a 5ish year old can help someone with what some of my friends consider one of the most convoluted and needlessly complex roleplaying games they've seen. Then one day a few years into the campaign I got sat on the other side of the table and handed a character sheet, so yea nostalgia guides my choice BIG time, but if that's why it's my favorite, oh well it's still why it's my favorite.

3.5 for life... Or something similar. Truthfully I haven't nor probably will have an opportunity to give 4th a try.

When i started, i played 3.0. But when i saw the 3.5, i was amazed.
Especially what they did to the ranger, my favorite class.
And after that I've always played 3.5
Great version, even if it didn't have the ranger update

For me, it's a tough call between Basic D&D, and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Edition of the Advanced version.

I started with Basic, so that will always have a special place in my heart. I graduated to 2nd Edition in my mid-teens and played a lot of it during high school. Like basic, it's got a lot of happy memories wrapped up in it.

My love for 3rd Edition is a little bit more clinical, because I like what it brought to the table in terms of more unified mechanics and better skill lists, rather than having warm snuggly feelings whenever I think about it. It's a touch on the bloated side in some places, but I think it was a good modernization of the aging rules.

I like 4th Edition because it has a focus on getting everyone in the action, and it's a more accessible game than previous editions. I also like the way it eliminates some of the "dump stat" mentality that previous editions had.

Umm... who says anything that Salvatore says has any merit to it? The guy's a really crappy writer of run-of-the-mill sword and sorcery stories...
At any rate, I HATE D&D with a passion. I hate both the mechanic and the system in general. I've ranted enough about it in Check for Traps, not going to do it any more. The game gets too much credit for what it is.

Surprising amount of votes for 4th Edition. I heard that the D&D folk tend to go "World of Warcraft Rip-off!" or something towards it.

Pathfinder from Pazio. its an updated version of 3.5 that fixed some of the confusing or broken mechanics updated and balanced the classes. Been playing for about a year now and I have to say it is my favorite thus far. 4th is ok but it has its own set of problems. And Im sry to say that I never tried dnd advanced mainly because when I started at round the age of 13 dnd 3rd was coming out and by the time i got my own set it was dnd 3.5 so i stuck with that.
