I've never played D&D, but I've always wanted to at least just try it out. I do have the 3.5 Players Handbook, but only because it was $5 and I'm a whore for fluff.

The one thing is Dungeons and Discourse [http://dndis.wikidot.com/], but since I'm also part of the development team, that is kind of a given. But on the less traditional side of things, I've had my share of Shock: Social Science Fiction [http://glyphpress.com/shock/]. Also a bit of Paranoia over a forum, but that hardly counts.
Huh, never heard of either of them. Kind of interesting to look over though.

I thought AD&D *was* 2nd edition. Can anyone explain the difference?
In the early versions of D&D they had this thing going where they would have two editions simultaneously. One was the more simplistic main game and the other was the advanced game for people who wanted more depth and complexity. An interesting idea that I don't really understand why they stopped. At least that is my understanding of it. I've never really looked at anything older than 3rd edition.
That's pretty much it. Then they folded them back together to make 3.0

Im torn between the nostalgia of 3.5 and the fact that i prefer the mechanics of the 4th.

I'm DMing a 4th Edition game atm but I swear to whatever gods may be listening as soon as I'm done with this story arc I'm retrograding back to 3.5

We wanted to try 4th Ed and I gave it a bloody good go, made a good roleplay out of what is essentially a boardgame rule system. We tried it, gave it a chance and the verdict is "Never again."

Why is there a "I Don't Play D&D"-option in the poll? That's not relevant to the question at all...
And yet, more people have voted for that than any other item.

I got my start in 2nd Ed. 3E was just amazing when it came out. All shiny and new.
We're currently playing Pathfinder, and I have to say that that's my favourite.

Followed by the Iron Heroes (by Monte Cooke) substitute player's handbook for 3.5.
3.5 is my favourite as well. However, I found it a bit hard to grasp (mostly because no one knew how to actually play it, and we only had 1 of the 3 starter books). Been looking at Pathfinder myself. Does it do a better job at explaining things?

Well, I've never played D&D, although my friends and I were really close to playing once. But, we never got around to it.

I've always wanted to try it, seems interesting and good fun with a bunch of friends, but never had the opportunity to :(.

I chose 4th edition because I found it was the easiest to sit down and play with a small party, because everyone is guaranteed to be effective. It's just so easy to get going and do something whereas in 3rd edition I found myself so darn gimpy. If it wasn't for us just going "screw the rules here have a dragon" I would have gotten no where.

I flip back and forth between 3 and 3.5.
Sometimes we mix and match rules if its for the good of the group.

I liked 3.5 solely because of Baldur's Gate and the like being based on it. Once I actually started playing DnD, I liked 4.0 because it was so much easier to get into, and a lower barrier to entry helped me enjoy myself much better.

I started in Summer Camp with Basic D&D, played that and Expert for a long while, and then got into AD&D 1e. But my personal favorite is 2e, because it got rid of the "If you get below this in a stat you must be class X" shash. Like, if you have a Wisdom under 5, you must be a thief. Or if your strength was under 5, you must be a magic user, and stuff like that. I honestly also disliked the stat maxima for different races and sexes. Yes, I got that they were trying to be realistic, but come on guys... in game where you can fight dragons, women can't be as strong as men? And nobody can be stronger than a male human? I think the dwarf and half-orc over there want a word with you...
