Sailor Moon Gets Italian Game Makeover

Sailor Moon and her Sailor Scouts are invading Italy as the start of what may be a major international brand revitalization.

It's been over ten years since Sailor Moon and her friends appeared in a videogame (over ten years, in fact). As a result, it's more than a little surprising to hear that the anime series is getting a new game, but the weird news is that it's only going to be a title exclusive to Italy.

The game, Sailor Moon: La luna splende, is going to be released for the DS. Based on the Google translation of the press release (which is written in Italian), it sounds like this is going to be an action-adventure title which allows gamers to play as any of the five Sailor Scouts. Each of the Scouts has a unique power/ability that will allow them to deal with level puzzles in a different way, and Tuxedo Mask is set to make an appearance.

As it turns out, Sailor Moon has seen a revival in Italy because Toei Animation has been broadcasting a remastered version of the cartoon since March. According to Wikipedia, Toei has promised that an international revival will happen if the brand does well in Italy. If it's doing well enough to get a videogame, it sounds as though Sailor Moon might very well be on the verge of a comeback.

In the name of the moon make it so!

If this is successful everyone may soon be blessed with the remastered version. I'm so happy right now.

I tried watching it again last year. It's one of those shows that simply DOES NOT hold up to your childhood memories.

Power Rangers totally does, though. Bulk & Skull are still funny as hell.

Used to watch this when I was young, now I dislike it. Not because it seemed more aimed at girls, but because I lost interest in it. Also their eyes irritate me.

Maybe that means Toei will let someone finally release the stars season on dvd.

Toei always has been weird with this license a well maybe after all these years they are getting smart.

Oh god, I remember watching that when I was younger. And all I remember was it was kinda like an animated, all-female version of Power Rangers (at its basest elements) and that the American version was censored out the ass.

I'm getting something very similar to Vietnam flashbacks...
I wanted an anime for my sins and I got one...

This is awesome, I used to race home to watch this after school.
I hope the entire series gets a touchup and a full blu-ray release.

Is Sailor Moon still relevant?
Was it relevant at all to begin with? It never got as big as Dragon Ball(Z, GT, XXX, GPS, whatever...) did it?

Isn't Sailor Moon one of those franchises that most people have forgotten by now? Like Dragon Ball Z?

In either case, while surprising, it's not completely improbable. Reviving shows from days of old is a trend that continues over and over as long as there is some brand recognition (and really, even bad publicity can be good publicity i.e. those of us who dislike the show now still remember it).

Still, compared to, say, the U.S., European countries tend to be more...liberal in what they are allowed to show in their media and I wouldn't be too surprised if Italy was the same way. And considering that Sailor Moon was actually a fan service manga/anime aimed towards *men* in Japan...

All I'm saying is that depending whether or not this game is based on the international version or the Japanese version is that Italy will get a very different game compared to what most of us think when we heard the title Sailor Moon.

(*sigh* And yes, I used to watch this show too...geeze, what was *wrong* with me?!?)
