Prey 2 Debut Teaser Will Confuse You With Cleverness

[video=2918]
The debut trailer for Prey 2 [http://www.facebook.com/prey2] is out and I'll be honest with you: if you're hoping to learn something useful, you're in for a big disappointment.

Released in 2006 after a long and convoluted development process that began around the time of Prey [http://www.amazon.com/Duke-Nukem-3D-pc/dp/B00002S6EL/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1300334084&sr=1-2] wasn't a masterpiece but it was a very solid and often underrated shooter. It followed the rather tragic adventure of Domasi "Tommy" Towadi, a Cherokee who's forced to embrace the heritage he's spent his life running from when the Earth is attacked by a massive, organic spaceship. The game featured a number of innovations like portals and reversible gravity but is perhaps best known for its doors, which could most accurately be described as "vaginal."

So what's the deal for Prey 2? It's hard to tell from this trailer, a live-action affair set on an airliner that has an unfortunate encounter with some glowing green lights. An air marshal pulls his weapon and opens fire on something; what he's shooting at remains a mystery but it's pretty obvious that whatever it is, it doesn't end well for the passengers.

But gamers who played the original Prey may recall that an airliner did appear in the game, first as it crashed into the ship and then later as a charred, wrecked hulk, and according to Kotaku [http://kotaku.com/#!5782169/prey-2-drops-you-in-the-shoes-of-a-human-bounty-hunter], that's the plane in the trailer. Players step into the role of the air marshal, who ends up fending off aliens aboard the invading ship until the game somehow leaps forward to a future in which he's become the only human bounty hunter in the galaxy at work on "a seedy alien planet."

It's a clever way to tie the two games together and while the premise is intriguing, it also strikes me as not very Prey-like. Maybe that's not entirely fair given that there's only been one other game in the series, but the Native American "angle" was a constant throughout the drawn-out development of the first game and now it sounds like the sequel will be just another generic "dude in space" shooter. It's still way too soon to make any kind of judgment since at this point Prey 2 doesn't even have a release target, but I have to admit that at this very early stage in the game I'm just a wee bit nervous.

1. Fuck yeah, this game is actually happening. I loved the first one.
2. Thank god they're getting rid of that Native American crap. Seriously, aliens invading the afterlife? Fucking really?
3. As long as the environments are just as big, epic, and mind-bending as the original, I'll be happy. I don't care who the protagonist is. (God knows I did my best to ignore Tommy)

Wow... just as a trailer for anything I thought that was actually pretty cool lol. I actually enjoyed Prey a bit when I first got my 360 and a second one wouldn't exactly be a bad thing. Just hope they tweak a few things first >_>.

Tommy better be essential to the plot. The first suggested a sequal...as Tommy.

I don't think the first game is underrated at all. Besides the aforementioned gravity shifts and portals (which are so barely implemented they hardly make a difference) and a weird checkpoint system for when you die, it was a mediocre and forgettable shooter. They're going to have to work hard to sell me (and I imagine a lot of people) on the second one.

Yes! Prey 2 and The Darkness 2 being announced within just a couple of weeks of each has made my pants extremely tight. Can't wait to play the sequels to two of the most underrated shooters on the 360.

This reminds me of a cold open from Fringe which can only be a good thing. Awesome show by the way if you want a good sci-fi genre piece.

Sweet,

I loved the first game even with its problems and I hope the second is just as good or better.

That is a really awesome trailer. But I'll probably wait for Prey 2 to have a significant price drop before I buy it. I didn't buy the first one a the day 1 price and while I liked a lot it I think of it as more of a filler game between bigger titles.

That description makes me think of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. Not that that's entirely a bad thing.

Seems to me that there isn't much to get worried about. This could be as simple as a mechanism to show the last 15 seconds of trailer with the giant blob in the sky.

I wonder what sort of timeline they were going to put this game on since the other game sort of resolved the plot.

How is this trailer confusing me with cleverness?
It's clever because it ties in to what was essentially a throwaway dramatic moment in the first game, and confusing because it doesn't actually tell us a damned thing about the new one.

First, YES! I'm not the only person that got a 17 in the first round of voting. This makes me feel SO much better about the March Mayhem.

OT - I never played the first game, but this trailer is fantastic. EA, please take note on how Bethesda decided to use an interesting perspective that actually helps create interest for the game, instead of trying to force a fake perspective of a game that will only generate hatred for the game (I'm looking at you, Dead Space 2).

Wow. I think this is the first time a teaser has left me completely indifferent. No real opinion on the matter. Just pure "meh". Sure, it wasn't "this is gonna be dumb" or "looks boring", but just "whatever". Not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing.

That explains everything! The island, the others, the numbers....EVERYTHING! Thanks, escapist!
